Update: Holland told Khan(!) that after the way West trip, energy’s the thing.
Darren Helm called up today, McCarty sent down. Why? It’s Cleary-related, according to MacLeod.
Darren Helm’s stay in Detroit won’t likely last long. He was told that he’d just be with the Red Wings for one game, but general manager Ken Holland said that he’d re-assess when Dan Cleary’s (scratched cornea) status for Friday is clearer.
“I don’t think I’ll be here too long,” said Helm, who drove to Detroit last night. “But it’s another good opportunity.”
Also, I answered a few questions for a Montreal blogger this morning. I’d tell you the name of it, but I can’t pronounce it.
In case you’d forgotten, Never-A-Bad-Day Bobby Lang is now a Canadie(a)n.
SFC: Tell me more about The Enigma (Robert Lang). Is he the best looking hockey player Detroit enver enjoy?
A2Y: Without question, The Enigma is the most handsome man to ever play hockey in Detroit. And he made sure everyone knew it every night. Straight out of a Warren Zevon song. Smiling Bobby Lang was 0 for 858 in defensive zone faceoffs while in Detroit, but his hair was perfect every shift.

Chief, how can you talk about Jacques Demers’ value and not mention the Adam Oates fiasco? I still hate him for making that deal!

Understand Drew. But I think the Goose Looney’s thing scarred Demers and I feel sorry for the guy. The Oates thing…bad, though.

Great interview Chief. I did not know you spoke French!
still the poster my children gather ’round to sing Christmas Carols to every year. It’s brought us all so much joy.
I just love this family values stuff…warms my litigious heart

Awesome is the word!
Those Lucky Francophiles got their chuckle today…As did I.
My favorite is this:
A2Y: Most of the Swedes, with the exception of Holmstrom, speak better english than Babcock. It’s because he’s so smart. He’s thinking three and four sentences ahead of the one that’s actually leaving his mouth. So he’s not really into finishing them all. He kind of leaves you hanging, like…”Homer’s back is killing him, we’re going to have to…Conklin wears 29 because over the summer I caught 29 perch in two days and then we’re going to put Hudler on the first power play unit.”

Bernie Freaking Federko for Oates….. absolutely horrid. One other tidbit about freaking Federko I hate is he’s in the HOF but someone like Dino Cicarelli won’t get the nod.
Having grown up within 60 or so miles of Montreal, I can say their fan base is equally as obnoixious as….. umm.. at least 19 other rabid hockey fans?

Most of our second-graders are ahead of Pronger developmentally
Nice touch, Chief.

I wasn’t saying that Federko wasn’t a great player and doesn’t deserve to be in the NHL, I’m not even saying I’m mad that we traded to get him on the Red Wings, but we traded a young ADAM OATES FOR HIM. Oates was on his way up, and Federko was on his way out. Demers must have called this one in over the phone after a few pops at Goose Loonies. This would basically be like today trading Zetterberg for someone Owen Nolan or Gary Roberts.

...NHL Hall of Fame is what I meant to say.

Suits me just fine. Gonna need all the speed we can get against the Frenchies tonite.
Should be one hell of a matchup. Price has been strong lately, so hopefully top lines can get the scoring touch back. However, MTL has been quiet in the goal department. Knowing that, tonite will likely be an 8-7 shooting gallery, and thats assuming only a couple 5 on 3 PPs.
I’m willing to bet Mac will be back for Monday’s game with the Poultry however.
Nice guest post there too.

The other frustrating thing about the Oates deal is that he was getting the golden treatment from the organization before getting sent off in one of the worst trades of all time.
Oates went from winning the National Championship with RPI in 1985, to playing for the Adirondack Red Wings where Ned Harkness (former RPI hockey Godfather in the 50s and 60s) was the GM. Here in upstate NY, Oates was as close to being a hometown boy as a kid from Canada ever would be.
My mind boggles at what sort of future the Wings could’ve had with Oates and Yzerman and then having a young Adam Graves, Petr Klima (the original enigma) and Joe Murphy (remember, he used to be good) come along a few years later to join them.

Stupid brain - I know those guys played together, I meant, you know, more than a year or two.

I’m sure there are a few girls who can remember a certain Ron Duguay donning the Winged Wheel crest on his chest.

There’s no way Lang surpasses Sergei “The Golden Child” Fedorov in the hair department. That boy did the pre-game skate without his helmet just so his golden locks would flow behind him and make all the girls go ga ga.
I knew some actual girls back then and the way they reacted, you would have thought he was one of the BackStreet Boys.
