Despite the blogging bluster and the idiocy of Drew Sharp, we still remember that Dominik Hasek retired as an icon, and one of the best goalies to ever play the game.
Thanks to Hockeytown Todd for the pointer.

Wow. No, I won’t forget that our CMOI was one of the greats in the game, ever. Watching that, though, reminds me of how great he really was. I guess I had forgotten a little…

imagine how many Stanley Cups we’d have had we gotten him in The Wheel ten years ago.

I’ll never forget our insane Czech. Especially since the Club Car is named after him. By the way, if anyone is jonesing for some hockey and has the NHL network, Game 6 of the Calder Cup finals is on. The Chicago Wolves are up 3-2 in the series over the Wilkes-Barre Penguins. Go Wolves!

I watch that and think, “I didn’t remember our defense giving up chances like that then.”
Great saves by Dom, of course. He really was one of the best ever.

Truly. I think his acceptance of losing his job to Ozzie was a more fitting ending than has been mentioned. It capped his evolution as person, and demonstrated his self-reinvention as a team player. I’ll drink to you, Hasek, in the comfort of the stress train you’re aptly named after.

Wow! That video’s score was very, very apropos. It was grand, epic, and soaring.
Thanks for the memories, Dom!

Very well-made video.
Hasek’s always been a strange one, and he takes a lot of flak (sometimes deserved). But during the era in hockey when goalies were the most dominant they’ve ever been, no one was better than the Dominator. The Olympic gold in ‘98 and the playoff run in ‘99 were the best hockey he’s ever played, and some of the best goaltending this generation is likely to see. The fact that ten years later, well over the hill, he remains a competitive NHL goalie is a testament to his incredible raw ability and work ethic.
Hasek might have been the most athletically gifted goalie we’ve seen. In fact, that’s the reason he hasn’t had a much larger impact on how the position is played: there isn’t really anyone else who can match his almost superhuman reflexes, flexibility, and hand-eye coordination. Combined with his ability to read players and the play, it led to a style of play never before seen in elite competition. He’ll rightfully go down a legend.

Wow. Today, with all the orthodox butterflying and the dictation about what goalies do and don’t do, the style from one to the other is pretty cookie-cutter. Some do it better than others, but they all do it pretty much the same (which is why Ozzie’s self-reinvention is so impressive). To see that reel makes you remember that what Dom did was absolutely one-of-a-kind. We won’t see his like again, in either physical ability or mental wildness.
So long, Czech Miracle of Insanity. Your name will always be retired on the Stress Train.

The first one minute or so, Gawd to see Dale Hunter again makes me want to slap someone, I HATED THAT SUNUVABITCH. ok, back on point.
Agreed, this is the flip side of the ranting we’ve all done about what Drew said.
Dom was great, epic. Definately one of a kind and I am glad to say he was a Red Wing. He’d always proved he was great competitor, goalie etc previously. And lastly he proved he was a true Red Wing by taking his being yanked in the Bubba JR series like a Red Wing.
Yes, as Ryan said… full circle.
