Update: “Sailor” should be capitalized. Baby steps Paul.
The sailor asked me to let you know he should be online around puck drop time.

wouldn’t it be nice to see the Stars put Fabian Road Warrior in the line-up on Saturday and watch Kronner knock him back to Stockholm...ahh, wonderful dreams…

Steve:
The kids could call him HoJu.
HA! But does Franzen have a talent for stealing donuts?

Wings have won 7 in a row. Osgood is 7-0 in the playoffs.
Coincidence?
“Ozzie’s always had the self-confidence, but I think it radiates off him more now,” McCarty said. “Against Nashville, his play soothed us without him ever having to say anything. He was always quiet, and unless you were part of the inner circle, you didn’t know what a clown he was, how funny he is.
Hasek makes the players think “holy crap what crazy shit is going to happen next”. Osgood makes them think “aaaahhhhhh, I’m so relaxed.” and it shows. big time.

couldn’t type during this game and until pressers were over. we owned, dominated, and moved the puck to drain the energy from their tired legs.
there were some terribly inconsistent calls by refs for both sides, but I do feel that the first 5-3 was soft, and Holmstrom’s goal should have been waved off.

I do feel that the first 5-3 was soft
I don’t see how a third man in on a scrum, throwing jabs into a guy’s face, is a soft penalty. but maybe it’s just me…

Do I get the award for “Person Who Stayed Up The Latest To Read The Live Blog Because He Couldn’t Watch The Game Last Night”? Bless all of you.

Donuts. Is there a thing they can’t do?

Jennifer Floyd-Anal (before Game One):
Like .001 percent of hockey experts give the Stars a flying Fig Newton of a chance in this series.
They are underestimating this Stars team.
They have a quality not easily explainable, a quality exemplified by Mo. They will do anything to win, even if it hurts, even if it is not what they want to do, even if nobody notices.
Um, well, maybe not when the poor babies are tired.
And that’s quite a turn-around from what you were saying about the Stars just a few months ago, Jenny-Poo.

I read that and thought, like, oh, I don’t know, pretty much every hockey team that advances to this poit?
By the time the final four are determined, there aren’t any teams left that don’t work hard and do whatever they need to to win, or they would be golfing already.
I’m not convinced of that, Baroque, but as long as the team is, and they play like it, then it’s a self-fulfilling prophecy and I’ll be happy anyway.
I’m not necessarily convinced of it myself, but covering all possible bases in the avoidance of any appearance of hubris. No need to offend the hockey gods.

It’s only called hubris if we don’t win; otherwise, “confidence,” “swagger,” “intimidating.”
Welcome everyone to demolition derby, round 3!

Mike Ribeiro: I don’t really care about what’s his name, Franzen. His scoring has been hot but the focus has to be what we have to do as a team to win.
“what’s his name”? You can say that about God but not Franzen, Johan. Tipping, not shaken.
Posted by Osrt on 05/09/08 at 08:12 AM ET
Wings haven’t won yet. Just 25 percent of the way to a win in the series.

I wonder what Brunnstrom is thinking right now…
Posted by PaulinMiamiBeach on 05/09/08 at 09:18 AM ET
I did think the 5 on 3 call was a bit odd, I thought it should have been the other Stars player who got the penalty, the one who was the third man in on the scrum rather than the guy who got it (sorry, blanking on names). Homer’s goal should have been waived off as well but I’m sure something will come back around on us during this series. The officiating looked like it was going to be tight at first but then it was back to “We don’t call anything unless they take someone’s head off and even then we have to make sure the head is cleanly off and not hanging on by a thread.”
The VS announcers can bite it. I seriously considered watching the game on mute, they were making me so mad.
Val continues his Star killing ways. There were times when the Wings did get penned in their own zone but Ozzy was there. That was the strongest game I have seen from him in a long time. It was a good start to the series. Let’s see another game like this on Saturday. LET’S GO RED WINGS!!!!!

Melrose on Sportscenter just now, about Timmonen’s injury:
This is, believe it or not, this is like Lidstrom getting hurt from Detroit. That’s how good this guy is.
Really? Where are Timmonen’s five Norris Trophies?
Just shut yer yap, Melrose.

from the Detroit News:
“We were told that if there’s going to be a player in the blue paint that would be no goal,” Tippett said. “Obviously that didn’t happen.”
go read the rule book. aren’t you a coach? shouldn’t you know the rules?

About Abel to Yzerman
Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome:

"I constantly marvel at how Bill (IwoCPO) and his disciples at Abel To Yzerman can be so pompous and full of themselves throughout every regular season, but come playoff time they collapse into wavering puddles of stress and nervousness as they anxiously await the impending and unavoidable collapse of the Red Wings in the post-season."
--Mile High Hockey
"I hate them because they are better than us. Of all the frigging teams…"
--In The Cheap Seats

"Why is it you Detroit fans are still so classless when you have such a classy hockey team, with such a professional GM and gentlemen players? I understand that the author of this blog is a manner-less cad, but the rest of you should be better."

Maltby looked fine this game, but I don’t know if he was really an improvement over McCarty, given that he only played one shift on the penalty kill. He might make the fourth line a little less of a defensive liability, in which case he’s should definitely be in, but just from tonight, I don’t know.
