Here’s What We Do: Live Blogging A Day That Will Probably Be Uneventful For The Wings

And we can start with this biotch.

Not sure if Sportsnet is referring to last night’s rebuttal or if another has taken place this morning.  Kenny, you stubborn bastard you.

Marian Hossa has turned down yet another long-term deal to try his luck as a mercenary on the free agent market. The Red Wings were prepared to keep Hossa in Hockeytown for 10 years.

Anyway, it’s a Live Blog.  And we’ll even open it up to you Pens fans who want to take a break from peeking around the corner to see who’s going to steal your Cup.

“Hossa is closing in with Chicago” TSN talking heads

Simple, they can’t or won’t.  TSN is talking out of their backside on this one…

Except that Chicago is also the team that had two zillion dollars worth of goaltending this season, so I think they really could be that stupid. Or maybe Ri(t)ch Winter floated it out there to get Tick Tock to blink.

Work is, thankfully, uneventful today.

I would guess the Wings foray into F/A is also uneventful.

Hoss hasn’t signed anywhere yet, interesting.

Also interesting to see what happens to Hudler.  I read somewhere that Sammy put his house on the market.

Wings roster will definitely be different.

As for losing Fil under my scenario, that element sucks, but we have to dump someone with significant salary, and he was the only candidate who was a forward.

The trade off for Hossa is all that depth. My lines could be moved around, but I just used the players we had to see where we would stand.

This really sucks, because I can handle losing Hossa, but Hudler too (likely) bah.

Our first cap casualties, yuk,

Little Gary must be happy that the Wings are losing Hossa because of his CAP.

It reminds me of the Wings losing Ray Whitney after the lockout.

I did not realize that Hoss played every game with both knees in braces.  I do not think the Wings should or could break the bank to keep him.

I liked Kopecky, and I do not think we have seen all his upside.  He sure did play hard.

I think Kenny signs Hudlum because the Wings need a gunner.  Hossa’s 40 goals are a big loss.

I am not sorry to see Sammy go.  Someone else can play the point on the PP.

The jury is out on whether Leino can bring it every night.  He just does not seem to hit or engage or something.  I just get the feeliing he is a floater.

I bet we will see a lot of Abbadabbadoo next year.

Who is next after Abby?  Emmerton?

Holland will be better off without Hossa, and with at least a little CAP wiggle room.

Scary, Chicago could afford Hossa at $5-6m at least in the short term by dumping Khabi or Huet’s salary and not resigning Havlat…

Hossa at a $6m cap hit means that for next year they’d have 17 players signed and $7.6m in cap room to work with…

Wow, didn’t even see that idea coming….

Hello bitches.  I love the stress around here.  Feels like home.

Though for me, this is the one time of year that I don’t stress about the Wings.  Never have and never will because I trust Tick Tock and my Uncle Mike.  I know that the team that comes out of Traverse City will be better than 29 other teams around the league regardless of who we lost or gained.

As Cainer4Wingsglory points out, there is no way the Hawks can get Hossa without basically admitting they won’t be able to resign somoene like a Kane or Toews when the time comes.

The ONLY way I can see them doing anything is in dumping off Campbell’s dog of a contract to some other unsuspecting team.

I really don’t think they can afford Hossa when they kept saying they could only afford Havlat on a 1 year deal….

Concur Cainer. The Hawks need all the cap space they can get to keep Kane and Toews while making up for overpaying on Khabi and Campbell.

The rumor I have read is that the Bruins are going hard after Hossa.

Cainer4Wingsglory,

No, I only calculated for next season. It would be a hell of a trick to pull off, and the management in Chicago would have to either be planning to trade Campbell (ha!) or not resign at least one of the young guys. But messing around on Capgeek, I had them at 21 players, with a few UFA’s getting a hefty-ish raise and Hossa signing at $6 mill and they were under the cap still. They’d have a lot to work with there. Add to that that Hossa might actually be willing to sign long term for less than $6 and it might not be something that any team could turn down, even if it means losing a player like Keith in a year. Hell, with that roster Huet would be their only real weak link…

Apparently I’m a glutton for punishment… I really hate thinking about this stuff.

...is it October yet?

Hoss to Chicago would certainly add fuel to the rivalry. The Wings need to focus on Hudler and Leino right now, because the reality is that Marian is gone, and the Wings will need to fill that gap in productivity.

Did Tick Tock give Hossa a deadline?  Or is he going to wait him out?

At some point, he’ll have commit to move on and deal with the rest of the roster.  Just not sure when that should be.  Giving Hossa a little bit to notice that the grass isn’t greener (even with more wads of the green stuff) isn’t the worst plan in the world, if you can get him to come back to your number.

A metaphorical intersection or a real intersection? If it’s a real one, get your a** out of the road.  Otherwise, for better or worse, I think we can all relate…...

Looks can be deceiving. I think all us Wings fans got a real good lesson that a team looking good on paper but that it doesn’t necessarily translate to winning the cup. There are so many factors that go into it besides talent. Most notably if your top players actually decide to show up

Bravo.

the Hossa to Chicago thing TSN is spouting is nothing but a smoke screen. Everyone with any sense let alone HOCKEY Sense knows CHI can’t afford to keep Toews Kane and Kieth, let alone Habi and Huet, and ADD HOSSA to a long term deal. Let it go, don’t nash your teeth or beat on the Hasek too hard. My head already hurts!

In Kenny we trust, and all will be well come October. I agree back to the defensive style that got us the Silver Chalice in 08. Keep Huds, like his play hopefully like the Mule he’ll find his guns in 10 SCF. So Long Sammy…please tick tock make him go away… Grab Lap Dance for us, and bring up Lieno another Finn for Fil to jabber with. (as a Finn decendent I do understand the need to hear the mother tongue spoken aloud now and then instead of all the swedish!) I know the D will get worked out.

As to Malts…well hey…I’m sure he, and my namesake talk about what life might be like outside the organ-I-zation in a few years. And it will not surprise me in the least if it happens after this season or the next depenending on Cup runs, goal production, face off %  and injurys and who else Tick Tock brings in. Yea Yea…I know… I know…. my typing to the Hockey God’s ears right? It will happen when it happens… Homer goes first though! the Timex is almost out of parts!

GO WINGS! Yea Chief 48 more Tuesdays…..love it!

Here’s my thought:  Tallon is doing it to try and force Detroit’s hand and get them to pony up for a contract that cripples the Wings for the foreseeable future.  Shrewd and dirty, but if he does have an offer on the table for Hossa… Enjoy the offseason next year when Kane, Toews and Keith (as well as Hjalmarsson and others) are all RFAs.

Word I’ve heard is that they’re thinking ahead to Semin’s eventual cap hit, and the young talent they have in Hershey, and not planning to break the bank.  My wife is a Caps fan and I’d love, for her sake, to see them get in on Hossa if the Wings can’t—I think Semin is a good player, but not a great one, and likely to end up with a cap number that is higher than he really is worth.

Hossa jumping ship to our chief division rivals, and we’re supposed to sit quietly and not say anything?

Other than Good Luck, that’s right. He’s a mercenary. That’s what mercenaries do. He gave us his best effort and we got to game 7 of the SCF. With Gary’s cap, we can’t afford to pay him even 75% of his market value. Of course he is going to bolt.

I like having former teamates on division rivals. It adds an extra element to the games and both sides know each others achilles heels. Hossa won’t end up in Chicago, but I’d love it if he did.
