As if there was ever any doubt.
No doubt he’d get in. No doubt as to the greatest Captain in hockey history. No doubt regarding his status as one of the top 2 Detroit Red Wings of all time.
“I truly had chills down my spine when I got the news.”
We know the feeling.

We have a framed autographed photo of Stevie Y from 1997 in my son’s room. Like others here, we use his story for our son to let him know that the team is more important than the individual, that journey will always contain failures and the measure of a person is continuing to do your best. Being swept by the Devils leading to a sweep two years later… Taking an emotionally battered team to another cup in 98. Putting his stats behind the need to lead his team in other ways. Single handedly deciding that the Wings were not going to lose to the Canucks after going down 0-2. Playing on one good knee… The Captain is a true role model and an example to anyone committed to a team, a group or an idea.
We also talk about Stevie Y.‘s eyes. Photos from games show a concentration, a committment in his eyes unparalled by anyone else in sports. Photos of Mia Hamm come close, but no one else has Stevie Y’s eyes.
On a lighter note, what would happen if Stevie Y’s girls married some of Nicky’s boys…. Genetic engineering indeed.

Wings Fan in Beanland, I am deeply sorry for your loss. 90 is a good long life and I know you never expect it to end.
My Grandma lived to be 98. I was alone with her when she left, and I was not prepared. I guess I thought she would live forever. God Bless.
Sincerely,
Kate

WFIBL: Your grandmother was awesome and should be celebrated accordingly. My best to you and your family.

Canadian passion with Swedish cool? Sounds like a future Captain to me.

‘Sup 19? My Grandmoms passed away last night at the age of 90. What a Wings fan she was. She missed half of my wedding reception to watch the Wings spank the Dive in Game 1 of the ‘02 WCF. I like to think she was waiting for Stevie to get into the Hall.

If Sammy’s time is indeed up with the Wings, my sympathies to him on selling his house in this economy.

In other news, RIP Setanta.

You gotta be shitting me, Andrew. I was at McMullan’s last night and they had hurling on Setanta TV. It was the first time I’ve seen hurling on that channel and now it’s gone?

Thanks for all the well wishes. I’m really grateful that I got to see her last week when I was back in MI.

Messier is the greatest captain, not Yzerman. Jesus Christ he’s an amazing player but Messier has twice the cups and twice the teams captained to cups. The leadership award is not named after Yzerman.

you have a right to your opinion .. too bad it’s wrong

Moose was a great captain but Stevie Y was the best.
Pure class.
Pure skill.
Pure leader.
My desktop on my home PC is a shot of Stevie Y. and my daughter who is now 4 used to point at the picture a couple years ago and say Dada. She has no idea what a huge compliment that was to me because she thought I looked a little like Stevie Y.
Awesome honor and well deserved.

Good morning 19. Anyone else wake up from a dream in the middle of the night in which “Good old hockey game” was blasting over the loudspeakers and you, yourself had to run over to cluck at Osgood, b/c Huds is up in the air?

Not at all, SYF, though I’ll withhold my opinion on hurling.
The company founded in a pub in Ealing in 1995 is bankrupt, though they’re still trading in Ireland (North and Republic), and it wouldn’t surprise me to find out that they’re still on the air in North America. Though for both, I’d expect their time is limited. ESPN is rumored to be in the running to take over in order to get their foot in the door in European sports.
As all my bank accounts and credit cards are registered to my UK home address, my satellite viewing card is unfortunately based on UK decryption keys, which means that unless I go out and buy a gray-market card (I don’t know enough to hack the cards), all Setanta channels are out for me. However, since NASN is still on the air, the rugby season is over, and I’m not too worried about missing Gaelic Rules footie, I just can’t get worked up about it. Got slightly more important issues in my life right now anyway. This is the first time I’ve popped my head onto non-work websites in two days.
WFIBL, condolences on the loss of your grandmother. Even at ninety years of age, I bet she could have kicked the asses of half the guys in the Pens’ locker room.
Probably a good time to relive one of the best posts here ever, written upon the jersey retirement night:
“It’s easy to point to playoff wins, celebrations to the tune of badly outdated music, dramatic moments, recounts of a speech that we’ll probably never know the true meaning of, wars with Denver, wars with St. Louis and even Phoenix, losses to San Jose, New Jersey, Calgary. Broken feet and wrecked knees.
“But, to me, the true Yzerman greatness is best reflected in a burst up the wing, in an 0-3 game, in the middle of January, followed by a glare to his teammates that said, “you don’t lie down for anyone with that jersey on.”
“The greatest Captain ever. Any sport. Any era.”

So…am I the only one excited by the prospect of taking Carl Klingberg in the first round?
Posted by AndrewFromAnnArbor from Fortress Europe on 06/26/09 at 02:20 PM ET
Well, McMullan’s seemed to get fired up for it and there was a sizable contingency watching the game and they wanted to know how it was played. The pub even had a hurling stick and ball available for the curious.
Setanta TV is a boon to me over the mind-numbing repetition of Sportscenter on ESPN and poker highlights. It was straightforward soccer, rugby, and Aussie Rules Football with minimal time devoted to sports news.
Hopefully, they’ll still have it here Stateside.

When The Captain’s 19 and C went into the rafters I cried worse than a little girl in grade one after dropping her popsicle and having all of her friends laugh at her..and chances are I’ll be crying even more in November.

it will be special when datsyuk gets in the hof because he was a rookie in the ‘02 team when they won the cup and will be the last one from that group to get inducted.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.
