Hey Bubba….It’s a Frigging Live Blog

Big day for Bubba. Big day. For the Wings?
Stay healthy. That’s it and that’s all.
Live Blog it is.
1516: Paul, I’ll try to find you a SopCast link. Agree with Osrt that the Gordie tribute wasn’t what it could have been.
1518: Nashville papers said this morning, Glennon I believe, that Ellis has been the only reason Bubba’s been winning of late. Exactly why I want them in the first round.
1520: Nice to see the injuries and flu haven’t degraded Dom’s puckhandling abilities. He’s pure magic with the puck.
1528: Ellis hasn’t been scored on in 170 minutes. My best Franzen early in the second breaks it.
1532: Hartigan with a one-timer from ten feet out. Doh.
1541: Overall, with 4:46 left in the first, it would appear the Wings don’t look as lethargic as they typically do in an afternoon game. Let’s talk cortisone. Anyone doubt Hank’s taken at least one of those this year? I’m betting he has, and he looks good. Hopefully Homer’s has the same positive effect.
1543: Quality comment from Pete below. Best scenario here is an OT win for the Wings. Let Bubba have a point.
1627: An absolute shooting gallery and Dan Ellis is starting to look like a dangerous man.
1643: Datsyuk missed the net on a 2-1. I’d say that’s an indication that Ellis is fairly imposing in net right now.
1705: Datsyuk, Franzen and Draper. Interesting line. Did anyone catch the interview with Babcock that FSN promo’d? Must have been a quick one. I’ve heard zero mentions of Holmstrom either.
1710: Overall impression of Bubba: if it wasn’t for Ellis’ play today, they’d be down 3. As Gramps pointed out, Erat is tough and Radulov is occasionally dangerous. But offensively, that’s it. Arnott’s done nothing. Defensively, they’ve played solid, but haven’t shut the Wings down. If the Wings encounter any problems at all with them in Round 1 it would be an identical game to today’s. Ellis, if he can possibly keep this up, will let them hang around long enough for game winner.
1715: Baroque gave us an update on Homer: Before the game they mentioned that an MRI showed no damage, but he’s still feeling pain, so the cortisone shot should reduce the swelling in his muscles in the next day or two and then they will probably get another image. Poor guy. (iwo: I’m counting him out for the playoffs)
1718: Four minute power play. This should do it. Great hit from Kronwall. Blasted Radulov with his head down.
1722: Nevermind. Lebda on the point makes me sad.
1729: Agree with Mick. Happy’s looking good today, and also agree that if he’s not scoring at least occasionally he’s not much good to anyone. Mick didn’t say that. I did.
1736: The dreaded three-point game. Wings have at least 110 and they’re cursing in Vancouver, Edmonton and even Chicago. Call your game winner.
1737: My prediction? Erat with the game winner. No shootout. We’re not scoring on Ellis today.
1742: Before this one’s over, let’s give a nod to Hasek. He’s played a great game, one that’s been overshadowed by the play of Ellis. It would appear he’s ready.
1745: Franzen with the game winner. What a shocker. 8th game winner this season, 6th in the last twelve of Wing wins. 14 goals in 13 games. And that would be a Bubba backbreaker. San Jose needs two points tonite or the President Trophy goes to Detroit, again. Any point the remaining three games for the Wings, and the same result…again.

My guess is that Gordie might not have wanted very much at all.
If he threatened to elbow them if they made a fuss, this might have been the compromise.
I am never watching the intermission segments on NBC again. I witnessed Mike Milbury making far more sense than Pierre Macguire (sp) - I think when he lost his hair it took some brain cells with it.
When Milbury is logical, is that one of the scenes of the apocalypse?

Hey, if the Wings win today, there’s a shot that Wings-Hawks game next Sunday means something.
If not, then, well who cares i guess.

*grumbling* Away from the TV today…stupid afternoon games. Hey Chief, did you get my e-mail yesterday?
Posted by Gabriel from San Diego, CA on 03/30/08 at 02:34 PM ET
Got it Gabe. Very well done. Will be re-newing the banner contest this week with all the entries I’ve received thus far. Probably Tuesday or Wednesday.

I’m hoping for a OT/SO win by Detroit here. Get Nashville that point but not the win.
Posted by Pete K from Chicago, IL on 03/30/08 at 02:42 PM ET
what are the line combos today? just curious as i’m at home waiting for my hangover to wear off before i head out for the bar to watch the game.
Posted by Alex from San Francisco on 03/30/08 at 02:50 PM ET
PS has Jiri Hudler become completely worthless? no points in like forever. and why is Hartigan playing and not McCarty? don’t get it. it’s not like he brings anything to the table (Matt from OTW said as much).
Posted by Alex from San Francisco on 03/30/08 at 02:54 PM ET
Overtime fine, but no stupid shootouts. I hate those things.
Posted by Baroque from Michigan on 03/30/08 at 03:10 PM ET
Ineffective or ineffectual? Which best describes the Nashville power play?
They aren’t doing anything with the man advantage today.
Posted by Baroque from Michigan on 03/30/08 at 03:13 PM ET
anyone remember the last wing to get suspended? and when/why?
Posted by christpuncher from Detroit, MI on 03/30/08 at 03:20 PM ET
I remember in the playoffs, years ago, wasn’t Jiri Fisher suspended for a game? Jiri Slegr filled in for him, I think?
It was for a hit - boarding or hit from behind or hit to the head or something.

Erat makes me nervous everytime he is out there.
He is likw Bobby Nystrom, whenever he scores it is a big and much needed goal.

Hartigan out D-Mac IN!

I’m liking Lebda less and less for some reason. Also, Rafalski looks off.

sopcast… ugh, I feel your pain. Lucky to have Dish Centre Ice here. Sorry, Chief. We used to live in Floyd County VA with fricking trees all over the place and no view of the satellite…
Hasek looks decent this afternoon after his, er, flu. Enjoying the live BLOG. GO WINGS!!!

Anti-Fighting Irish? ![]()
Hasek does look pretty good for just coming back from being sick.
And Hudler has a lot of jump - he’s been shooting a lot and looks pretty comfortable with Cleary and Filppula both back from injury.

Didn’t catch Babcock.

cwix: it’s brutal. I was on hold again today with Verizon Fios. I know they can’t tell me I’ll be getting the hockey package this year, but sometimes I just feel like talking to them and letting them know how I feel. It’s therapeutic, I think. They don’t like me very much.

The back door illegal online streams are very inconsistent lately. Makes me wish I ordered center ice online. Definitely getting it next season, except I kept hearing the horror stories about blackout games when they’re on the NHL network. Thanks Gary, ass. Hopefully Time Warner carries both Center Ice and the NHL network. As to parts of the game I’ve actually seen, Hudler got robbed a few times, Ellis is actually looking really good and Drake threw a few good hits. Really tight game so far. Crossing my fingers in hopes that my stream will come back…

This game reminds me of a basking crocodilian.
Long periods of near inactivity as he lays on the bank or slides into the water, with brief flurries of violent activity as he drags a deer underwater by the face.

Chief: FIOS… yet another four-letter word.

The life is slowly being sucked out of me. Feel like I am in a time warp…a never ending scoring game of HELL. Stress Train I am seated.
Posted by dwingsrock from VA on 03/30/08 at 04:30 PM ET
dwingsrock: welcome aboard. don’t think for a second that it gets any easier. Yes, the stress train offers commiseration and free alcohol, but nothing can diminish the fact that there is nothing fun about the playoffs. From day one, they suck and suck hard. On the day of the parade we’ll be worrying about Zetterberg falling off the back of a convertible.

Even with the dearth of goals, I’m just happy I don’t have to endure Milbury and Macguire. ![]()

Winner: Radulov.
(I’m always wrong, so I’m jinxing Nashville.)

Thanks Cheif:
I can appreciate the free alcohol. I will need it throughout the playoffs, surely. The pain is already settled in my neck, part of hockey!

Well, back to my work.
Interesting piece of trivia from Ken and Mickey - with Dan Cleary being the number 13 pick for the Blackhawks, Buckets is the highest draft pick on the Wings’ roster.
Thought it was funny. Figures that he would be a discard from other teams, too.
Posted by Baroque from Michigan on 03/30/08 at 05:00 PM ET
I hope that if, in the playoffs, the Wings run into a “hot” goaltender like they did today, they’ll be able to look at what exactly it took to beat him today(shoot the damn puck and follow the trash). Really glad that it was Zetterberg that took that shot too, since today it seemed like his habit of skating into the zone and around the back of the net without getting the puck on net was spreading like a virus this afternoon.

Hey, cwix, we had the same problem the next county west in Va., Carroll Co. Chain saws took care of the problem. I now have a clear view of the southern sky, and 8,000 board feet of lumber!
Missed the game today, stupid work. Tivo cut it off before the OT, stupid dougie. Left Coast looked to have the best games tonight, anyway.
Posted by dougie on 03/30/08 at 06:42 PM ET
anyone else NOT miss samulson tonight?
Posted by christpuncher from Detroit, MI on 03/30/08 at 06:44 PM ET
I went to the game…was pretty brutal overall, Nashville did everything in their power to slow the game down and make it choppy, and it worked.
I thought the Wings as a whole team today looked very disinterested, you can tell that the strain of the last week of the season is upon us. Pav was off his game, and the whole team had a general problem of making good passes. It’s not April 10th yet?
Ellis - he was very lucky today, 2 or 3 of the shots he stopped squeaked behind him and laid in the crease a few seconds. He and Nashville took the loss very hard, a lot of players were just staring at the scoreboard.
Hasek - very sharp, looks like he’s ready. That save on Suter in OT was huge and obviously allowed the Wings to win the game. He played with a lot of confidence, which was good to see.
Mule - what else can be said? The man has confidence and it shows right now. He’s the perfect fit for Pav and Hank and if Homer comes back, I don’t see how Babcock can put him back with Z and D.
Also…someone had a damn Tootoo whistle again today. Things are so damn annoying. Hopefully Bubba can spend all of summer picking those out of his ass.
Posted by Jeremy on 03/31/08 at 12:15 AM ET
Franzen is doing his best Brett Hull impersonation, only less of a jackass and, dare I say it, better-looking. He’s shooting everywhere and at everything. I’d say that Cleary needs to watch his jaw, but this is Franzen we’re talking about, not William Tell. With fourteen goals in the last thirteen games, he could come close to threatening Homer’s yearly total before Homer is even back. Being better defensively, a bigger body, and about as mean, I agree with Jeremy that Homer may have a tough time getting back onto the top line. He does offer better coordination and screening than Franzen, so I guess we’ll see how it goes. Not a bad dilemma to have if they’re both healthy.
Faceoffs look to be getting better, though still need to tighten up. A total team winning percentage of a shade of 50% will not cut it in the playoffs.
Did I hear something about a disallowed Kronwall goal? Don’t tell me the refs have their Holmstrom-colored glasses on when they look at Franzenstein…
Posted by AndrewFromAnnArbor from Bubba's caddy outfit...nine iron sir? on 03/31/08 at 03:19 AM ET
If Franzen and Holmstrom are both healthy, they can alternate if Babcock needs to double-shift Datsyuk and Zetterberg.
Did I hear something about a disallowed Kronwall goal?
He probably hit a post - although there was one “goal” where the puck went in the net when the back of it was off the ice. The nets were spending a lot of time elevated this game.
Posted by Baroque from Michigan on 03/31/08 at 05:58 AM ET
Um, so what’s the record for game winning goals in a season? In a month? Yikes. Franzen better be NHL player of the month or something.

Actually, it was a cross check to the grill of a much shorter player on Carolina in Game 4 of the SCF (so Slegr got to play in the Cup-clinching Game 5). That, however, was not the last Wings suspension. Mathieu Schneider was suspended 3 games for an accidental high stick to the head of Glen Murray vs. Boston in a late season game a few years ago. I remember it because it was a ridiculous suspension at the time—and even more so in light of Randy Jones getting 2 games for ending Patrice Bergeron’s season this year. I also recall Schneider saying after his hearing that Murray is one of his best friends in the league, so there’s no way he was trying to hurt him (which supposedly was Campbell’s rationale for 3 games).
RE: the Hartigan versus McCarty “mini-controversy” here and in some other threads. I think Babs and the organ-I-zation are wisely taking a cautious approach with McCarty. I think they already have a decent grasp of his capabilities (and would venture to guess that Babcock has seen video of every minute he played in GR). So, rather than throwing Mac head first into the mix, they’re letting him ease in. Unlike, for example, Colorado, where they played Forsberg more than 20 minutes in his first game because “he looked so darned good out there.” Not that McCarty and Forsberg’s situations/expectations are the same, just that it was really stupid of Quenville to “throw Peter to the wolves’ like that.

Thanks. That was the last one I remembered, and only vaguely (obviously).
