High On The Horse In Denver

Wow. Adrian Dater’s on a roll this morning.  Applauding Mats Sundin.  Good.  Nice guy. Tough decision.  Deserves your admiration, Adrian.  But then he gets a little crazy.  And I think you’ll see where I’m going with this after you read a bit.

I think Sundin had this vision of himself, say, as a Red Wing, lifting up the Cup and having this awful thought suddenly like, ‘Wait a minute, this is a fraud. I’m no more a real Red Wing than that guy in the stands over there, with his store-bought red and white jersey.’

This isn’t just Dater blasting the Wings as usual.  Yeah, he takes a poke.  But it’s just a little one.  And his indirect slam of Klessel makes up for that, so we’ll cut him some slack.

But…not completely.

That’s why I’m so glad Bourque didn’t win the Cup with the Avs until that next year. If he had won it - and that team should have won it - in 2000, he would no doubt a much less satisfying feeling than that next year, when he went wire-to-wire with one team. He would have still thought of himself too much as a Bruin with a funny looking uniform on if he’d won it the first year as a rental player.

Yes, Adrian.  He had to wait one more year to win the Cup, and one more year before his jersey was retired by the franchise for which he played a little more than one full season.  If you’re going to talk about mercenaries and rentals, and rail against them, you may want to consider the team in your own backyard who wrote the book on the subject.

Normally I try to see these things from both sides.  Like, wouldn’t I feel the same way as gulp an Avs Fan as I do as a Wings Fan?
But then I come to my sanity and realize that I couldn’t feel the same way cuz I would’ve offed myself already if I were an Avs fan.

If that wasn’t bad enough, they did it about a month after the Bruins had their retirement ceremony for Ray.  Yet the majority of Dive fans don’t have an issue with it.

Even worse - they announced they were doing it BEFORE the Bruins did.

Classless.

Nice to know he’s developed the ability to read minds and know that Bourque wouldn’t realy have appreciated winning the Cup the first year.

So, logically, let’s say the Wings did pick up Sundin as a rental, and he did win this year - and then came back for another year and won again.  Does that mean the first Cup would be less legitimate or less real than the second?

There isn’t enough space to engrave qualifiers after the name “rental player,” “only played in two games in the last series,” “injured for two-thirds of the year.”  A win is a win is a win, and they all count the same in the end.

Just wanted to chime in with the reminder of the idiocy and arrogance of that organization.

And what if Colorado didn’t win the Cup the next year, and Bourque played the end of his career in Denver without EVER winning?  It makes a nice fairy tale after the fact, but there is nothign pre-determined or certain in the playoffs.

Even worse - they announced they were doing it BEFORE the Bruins did.

You must be kidding, right?  Wow.

I’m just looking forward to the day when a “Garcia” sweater hangs proudly from the raptors of the Pepsi Center.

Sorry, had to get in on the fun.

I believe the given name to a certain “Hat Trick” Axelsson, combined with the name of the part of the body that a helmet is designed to protect, summarizes what Adrian Dater is in product and principle.

Was Dater drunk when he wrote this? Grammatical errors in the first two paragraphs, “mongerers”? Am I reading Facebook, or the blog of a journalist?

Wonder how Dater feels about those despicable mercenaries now…

Of course they would have to win the cup before he has to proclaim Floppa’s championship illegitimate, so lucky for him he probably won’t have to worry about it.  smile
