Back in Michigan for a week’s vacation…which is why I’ve avoided each of you for more than five days. Consider this a brief interruption before I get back to remaining unshaven and 12 ounces heavier.
Two guys. Two “snipers”. And a couple issues.
First. Oompa Loompa’s playing hardball? Is that what I’m to understand? He’s calling press conferences and somebody’s (his agent no doubt) saying he’s KHL-bound. George, of course, is on it and will stay after it.
We dig you Happy. You’ve become a favorite of the 19 and we’d like to see you make some money.
We would have also liked to see you score just once in your last twelve playoff games. Because, write this down, a “sniper” who doesn’t “score” doesn’t get to be “strong-willed” or “stubborn”.
In other words, take the money Tick Tock offers you, be a Red Wing and do your job in the playoffs. When you do, the payday you think you deserve might come. Or it might not. Maybe it never will and maybe your real reward is playing on the Best Team in Hockey and being a millionaire while you’re at it.
So, STFU about the KHL talk.
How about this? See this?
“After a while, he didn’t want to be in the (AHL) and lost his enthusiasm for being there,” Holland said.
Tick Tock Kenny’s talking about Ville Leino and that quote rubs me wrong. I’m wondering. When Leino is on the third line, or even the fourth, and his minutes aren’t what he believes they should be because he’s got a little issue with backchecking, is he going to “lose his enthusiasm for being there”?
Mark this down. Leino is going to spend the occasional evening hour in Uncle Mike’s doghouse.
As I told you, I’m vacationing back in Michigan and it’s awesome. In St. Clair Shores until Thursday then it’s Up North for three days with five of my friends from high school. My wife is promising me she’s going to be counting the amount of times she has to shake her head at me and say, “Bill….In. Appropriate.”
Oh, and I had a run-in with a Wing yesterday. More to follow on that because it was funny and I want to do the story justice.
Almost forgot. If you’re feeling “real lowdown today” (I’m back to quoting Seger because, bitches, I’m in Michigan)...consider this: 47 Tuesdays until the Cup comes home.

Hey *#$%@&. I never said repeat as in 2 years in a row. I said repeat as in 4 seasons, 4 different winners/champs. But i guess that simple idea is lost on you mental midgets. You hear repeat and think about what the Wings DIDNT do this year.

With eight defenseman, am I the only one who thinks that if Lilja comes back, either Lebda or Meech plays swingman and is our twelfth forward? Monkey, I’d like it to be D-Mac or Downey too, especially since we lost some size this summer (and gained some by the subtraction of Hudler, but you know what I mean), but it doesn’t look like Kenny’s thinking along the same lines. So I wouldn’t be surprised to see one of them pressed into service on the fourth line, where their only responsibility would be to keep the puck out of the net for ten minutes a night, and hopefully chip in more goals than they would on the third defensive pairing.
I just hope Gator gets real comfortable on the wing real fast.

I expect one of the defensemen to be traded, most likely Meech. I think Lebda is above him on the depth chart and isn’t making significantly more than him. Lilja is the wildcard as his salary is the one that is the most logical to move but his injury makes that difficult.
If Wings are going to use the swing-man to round out the roster then they need to go get Dandenault who is an experienced D/F. I would feel much better with him playing the swing role than Meech or Lebda.

No.

Kenny is as Kenny does, but often when things such as Hudler suddenly defecting happen it encourages you to revisit your plans. Obviously he’s got an open roster spot, but then again not much cap space to fill it with. Holding on to that cash will ensure flexibility at the trade deadline. Having some grit is not a bad thing, however.
So I wouldn’t be surprised to see one of them pressed into service on the fourth line, where their only responsibility would be to keep the puck out of the net for ten minutes a night, and hopefully chip in more goals than they would on the third defensive pairing.
With eight d-men but only 11 forwards, there is certainly a potential opening for Meech and/or Lebda at forward.
Posted by monkey from here to Timbuktu on 07/09/09 at 07:35 AM ET
I’m not really comfortable with a guy playing the swing role for any extended period of time. What you usually end up with is a guy who’s not particularly good at the position he’s playing. Meech isn’t a very good forward. Dandenault could certainly fill that role if need be, but I’d rather see a true forward like Grier than a converted D-Man.
Posted by J.J. from Kansas on 07/09/09 at 08:15 AM ET
Moocat, I’d rather have Dandenault for swingman too, but that requires him signing for between $1.5-$2 million a year (do-able, don’t get me wrong) and trading Meech or Lebda before the start of the season, and wouldn’t leave us with any cap room for callups, so maybe it’s better that we go the raw route and have one of the guys already on the roster fill in at forward. Both of them have done it before at the NHL level, and even if they weren’t exactly blowing us away with sublime scoring chances, they were at least solid defensively. And no way would we get a roster forward in exchange for Meech, Lebda, or Lilja if we went that way for the trade so many people are expecting.
Posted by AndrewFromAnnArbor from Fortress Europe on 07/09/09 at 08:15 AM ET
I’d rather see a true forward like Grier than a converted D-Man.
So would I, but…cap space and versatility are important too. I think you guys are getting me wrong. I don’t really WANT to see that, but I wouldn’t be surprised to given the necessities of the circumstances.
Posted by AndrewFromAnnArbor from Fortress Europe on 07/09/09 at 08:17 AM ET
Yeah, I agree with you there, Andrew. Just depends on how the cap works out, but this is my order of preference (for things that might be realistic)
1. Gritty depth forward like Grier or Axelsson, Lilja and Ericsson playing the third pairing, Lebda as #7, Meech gone.
2. Dandenault brought in as a forward, Lilja and Ericsson third pairing, Lebda #7, Meech gone.
3. Dandenault brought in as forward, Lilja and Ericsson third pairing, Dandenault as #7 with Abdelkader coming in to replace him as forward, Meech and Lebda gone.
4. Abdelkader plays most of the year with fourth line minutes, Lilja and Ericsson third pairing, Meech as relacement in forward or D as needed, Lebda gone.
Of course, this all depends on Lilja being healthy enough to play. I also haven’t factored in that Kenny signed another defenseman the other day as I honestly have no idea where he would fit on the Wings defensive depth chart.
Posted by J.J. from Kansas on 07/09/09 at 08:43 AM ET
I think that Abdelkader being up next year is now non-negotiable with the departure of Hudler, JJ—without him, we only have ten forwards and would need two more (maybe one forward like Grier plus a swingman) to keep him down in GR next season. But that would rule out a trade and would put us close to the cap again. I don’t like the thought of Gator being forced to play only eight to ten minutes a night adjusting to an uncomfortable position on the wing rather than twenty minutes a night at his natural position, but this unanticipated situation with Hudler has forced Kenny’s hand.
Posted by AndrewFromAnnArbor from Fortress Europe on 07/09/09 at 09:01 AM ET
There is a huge opportunity here for one of the kids from GR to step up…. trying to put a positive spin on some of this here. There’s ice time and roster spots to be had for motivation for these kids too, unlike many years past where we’ve had more bodies available than ice time & roster spots.
We will ink one more body before training camp, just a matter of whom & projected role. I’m good with Grier or Dandaneault, but in Kenny we trust.
The little Tyrant must enjoy seeing Kenny’s balls in a vice this summer.

Gramps, as ‘Do Not Decide’ lacks a subject, it qualifies only as a sentence fragment, not as a complete sentence. You cannot assume an unused noun as the subject, since the assumed noun could just as easily be ‘they’ as ‘you,’ or ‘we’ for that matter. Implied subjects function only in colloquial speech, and not in proper speech. As a directed order, ‘Do Not Decide’ scans okay, but is still improper speech.
Huh. I was under the impression that imperative sentences were valid with an implied subject of “you”. I blame a poor education.
Posted by shanetx on 07/09/09 at 09:17 AM ET
Shit, you’re right. For some reason, I had the mental block on and forgot that we are two forwards short if we want to keep Abdelkader in GR another season.
How much is the season opener in Stockholm going to affect our training camp schedule? I assume we’re going to have less time to see some guys on the ice, but I have no idea how much less.

I would not mind Lebda playing forward at all. However I’d rather it be a permanent change. I’m not a fan of Lebs on the blue line WHATSOEVER. He jumps every rush and leaves his point wide open or subject to a forward coming back to handle it out of position. I think he’d make a pretty decent 4th line grinder, but he scares me on the blue line.

Anyone else still PO’d at how badly we failed at the “let Hossa go to save Sammy and Hudler” argument. I’m still not over it. I even pulled out a Jennemy “Ack” (without the exclamation point, of course) in a e-mail describing it to a co-worker.

I’m still waiting for him to pull a rabbit out of his hat…or Travis Moen. I pray that pulling Home Keys out of GR so quickly will pan out favorably. But I love the fact that trolls are so infatuated with him because he scored 2 goals in 2 games in the final…that being their only exposure to him.
Agreed, the trolls are fat. Where’d I put that rat poison….?

I’m not sure where folks are getting their figures for the number of forwards we have signed or the amount of cap space that’s available, but here are the facts:
FORWARDS
Pavel Datsyuk: 6,700,000
Henrik Zetterberg: 6,083,333
Johan Franzen: 3,954,545
Valtteri Filppula: 3,000,000
Daniel Cleary: 2,800,000
Tomas Holmstrom: 2,250,000
Kris Draper: 1,583,333
Kirk Maltby: 883,333
Justin Abdelkader: 850,000
Ville Leino: 800,000
Darren Helm: 599,444
DEFENSEMEN
Nicklas Lidstrom: 7,450,000
Brian Rafalaski: 6,000,000
Brad Stuart: 3,750,000
Niklas Kronwall: 3,000,000
Jonathan Ericsson: 900,000
Andreas Lilja: 1,250,000
Brett Lebda: 650,000
Derek Meech: 483,333
GOALTENDERS
Chris Osgood: 1,416,666
Jimmy Howard: 716,666
ROSTER SIZE: 21
SALARY CAP: 56,800,000
PAYROLL: 55,100,653
CAP ROOM: 1,659,347
Those numbers assume Lilja will be able to play and that the Wings will keep him if he can play. I can see Babs drooling over a third pairing of Lilja and Jonny.
If I was GM (yes, I know, we’re all fortunate that I’m not), I’d trade Lebda because he’s got more value than Meech while Meech has more flexibility (and a lower salary) than Lebda. With Brett out of the picture the final figures would be:
ROSTER SIZE: 20
SALARY CAP: 56,800,000
PAYROLL: 54,450,653
CAP ROOM: 2,349,347
That would leave the Wings $2.35M with which to sign a third-line winger and a depth forward (basically a $500k guy to sit in the press box until someone gets injured). That leaves $1 .85M for someone like Grier. Is it enough? Probably not. But Tick Tock has been known to entice native Michiganders “home” for a discount.
Realistically, and based on what Kenny has said, he’s unlikely to make his next big move before training camp…when he’ll know what Lilja’s status is. By then it’s likely Grier will be gone. But there will be some “bargain” guys left. The good news is we only have about two months to wait until we find out what will happen.

Grier made $1.775 last year and he’s probably not due any kind of a big raise.

I never did consider such a thing, but I don’t mind the idea. Lebs can’t shoot for sh!t though.
I’m wondering, as you all do muse, what is with all the rush? Huds leaving is sucktastic but that means we need to sign someone in early July? I like the idea of bringing up some of the GR youths for a shot at the big show and just have them revolve in and out a couple of weeks at a time. In doing so, toss the idea of playing lights out in the 1st half of the regular season. It’s too long and who cares if we compete for the President’s trophy so long as we get in the top 3 seeds in the conference. And then you trade some hot looking prospect for a hungry vet with playoff skills and some size to him mid way through thereby salvaging cap space for the season.
That and bring back Dandy. Always was a fan of his.
Posted by Deuce from Brooklyn on 07/09/09 at 10:10 AM ET
Grier made $1.775 last year and he’s probably not due any kind of a big raise.
But Tick Tock would have less than $100k in cap room left if Grier was to get $1.775. That caused major problems last season. And big guys who play solid defense, score 10-15 goals per season and can fight anyone in the league are at a premium. So Grier would have to take a discount to come to Detroit. But he was born here, and he may take that discount in order to have a shot at a SC ring.

That may well be the way Kenny plays it. An experienced depth forward at $500k and a Griff at about the same price would leave the Wings with over a million in cap space. Rittola played well in camp last year and 6’5” Johan Ryno is coming back from Sweden this year. Those two, and possibly Emmerton, could get a shot at a fourth line spot. That would allow Abbi to move up to the third line…and who wouldn’t enjoy watching an all-Griff’s line of Abbi, Helm and Leino?
Lots of possibilities. It should be fun watching this all unfold.

What about bringing someone like Brighton, MI Dwight Helminen over from Carolina? He had a solid career at U of M, but signed with the Rangers the year of the lockout and then went over and played in Finland for a couple years before returning as a UFA and signing a entry-level deal with the Hurricanes? I watched him in the couple games he got in for CAR and he’d make a great 4th line center or wing…and cheap too!

Anyone else still PO’d at how badly we failed at the “let Hossa go to save Sammy and Hudler” argument.
If Kenny knew Hudler would bolt, would he have thrown more money at Hossa? Would it have made a difference? The answer may likely be no, and we’ll never know for sure, but it makes Hudler’s decision irritate me further.
How much is the season opener in Stockholm going to affect our training camp schedule? I assume we’re going to have less time to see some guys on the ice, but I have no idea how much less.
Training camp will only feature three days of hockey ... the shortest camp ever, thanks to Stockholm and the Olympic break. I’m not sure if it’s been announced how many exhibition games will be played. But I wonder if the team learned anything from the “let the D-men battle it out for the last spot” experiment from last year. From all reports, Quincey had a terrible camp, which is why they let him go in favor of Meech. Yet wouldn’t we be all over a Quincey-Big Rig pairing?
I was under the impression that imperative sentences were valid with an implied subject of “you”. I blame a poor education.
That’s correct, Shane. But because he’s so learned, maybe Big Rich cares to weigh in on this one?

George Malik has the info on his blog.
Both guys have played a few NHL games and obviously will be fighting for a “depth” spot on the roster in September. Here are their stats:
• Jeremy Williams
• Kris Newbury
Posted by OlderThanChelios from Grand Rapids on 07/09/09 at 11:10 AM ET
This offseason will be similar to the transition the Wings faced coming out of the Lockout in 05. We went from a loaded team to one that had to make a number of moves to the roster to conform to the cap.
Back then, the scouts came up with fringe NHLers like Dan Cleary, Andreas Lilja and Mikael Samuelsson in 05.
These guys developed beyond anyone’s wildest expectations. Cleary made a lot of fans with his toughness as a checking line forward, and Samuelsson surprised everyone by chipping in 20+ goals. These guys over the last few years developed further, and LIlja made it onto the 1st line PK.
Now it’s up to the scouts to find those fringe players again. Our roster has been loaded for a couple of years, so we haven’t needed to rely on these types of players recently. Guys that can fill in for injuries, or, like Cleary, surprise everyone and play a major role on the team. I’d much rather sign hungry, cheap, minimum guys that want to prove they belong in the NHL, and maybe didn’t have the chance to work in a puck-possession system before, instead of some retreads like Bertuzzi or Grier that will eat up cap space.
Maybe Tick Tock has already signed them, maybe he’s got on or two on his radar, guys that languished in Phoenix or Florida or Tampa Bay, or maybe even in Europe.
Posted by Cliff on 07/09/09 at 11:23 AM ET

I’ve been out of it lately. Kind of unhappy with losing Hudler, as well as being tied up with some modicum of Thrashers enthusasim (hopefully I won’t be let down again by the adopted home team, but I know I won’t be let down by my hometown team back in Detroit).
Hope your vacation is going well, Chief. I’m planning on taking a week oe so and going back home sometime in the early fall. I’m a cold weather kind of person, after all. Can’t stand the heat. Don’t ask why I live in Atlanta, because I’m unsure of why myself anymore.
I have to wish Hudler nothing but the best in Moscow. I believe he could have done more to make his presence known in the playoffs, but it’s admirable to see he didn’t want to play for another club.
Thinking of phoning my friend to have him bring me some scotch (Glenlivet, Glenfiddich, etc whatever). No liquor stores near work. Still, quite optimistic for the Wings. But feeling down and out about losing Hudler. He really was a favorite of mine.

Surprised you have the capacity to think at all. Detroit, much like any major city, has its clean parts and its dirty parts. Michigan’s economy being what it is, the clean-up that was under way has really stalled out. I went to Greektown a couple nights ago with a multi-million dollar married couple out of Seattle who actually said a lot of the “lakey-type” rich folks are whispering about coming to Detroit in the next few years due to Michigan’s natural beauty, and Detroit’s affordable up-scale housing.

Pens trolls are less intelligent the average Irish Setter; they slober about as much, too. My monitor needs a cleaning because of the so stupid he’s funny troll ripping the Wings saying that no one repeats in the post-lockout world when his team is the current Cup champs. Maybe that’s why he’s here; he wants to root for a winner and realizes that the Pens won’t win it again next season?
Do Pens trolls leave their parents’ basements much? Between posting “FIRST!1!1!” on every entry on pen(i)sblog and their trolling here, I guess not. If they did leave the basement once in a while, they’d realize that other than Kennywood, their city is a dump just like Detroit.
Here is what pens trolls just don’t understand. Hossa was always a mercenary. He was for the pens; he was for the Wings. None of the 19 were surprised or upset when he left. Hudler was not a mercenary.
Hudler was a draftee that the Wings developed into a world class hockey player literally capable of playing a significant role (not starring) on any team in the NHL and being well compensated for it. Hudler is a restricted free agent, meaning he is partially Wings property.
Benedict Hudler couldn’t even bring himself to sign an offer sheet with another NHL team if he wanted more cash than the Wings could pay. If he had taken five million from the pens, the 19 would say thanks for your service Happy good luck except against the Wings and we’ll take our draft picks please.
But no, he completely screwed the organization that helped him become the player he is today by signing outside the NHL, thereby depriving the Wings of the compensation they are owed. Damn right we’re pissed off. And you f*cking trolls would be too, if one of your RFAs did the same thing.
So back away from your porn infested computers for a while and go upstairs and ask your mommy to make you a peanut butter and jelly sandwhich. If you ask nicely, she might even cut off the crusts. She should be awake by now after a meth-crazed night of whoring herself out at Liberty Avenue and Smithfield Street.

I gather lots of folks aren’t too happy with Happy’s departure. I’m not fazed either way at this point. I’m not feeling anything.

You know what Babs would say…this is just an opportunity for someone to step up their game and claim Happy’s spot. I’m betting it’s Leino, but it could just as well be someone like Rittola or Ryno or Newbury or someone who’s not even on the radar yet.

I’m looking forward to the day Johan Ryno is a regular. The kid was a beast the few preseason games I saw him play. Unfortunately, it seems he’s still got some maturing to do before he’s ready for that step.

About Abel to Yzerman
Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Well, there it is. 21 man roster; 11 forwards, 8 d-men, 2 goalies. $1.5 million in cap space to play with, two roster spots open. Maybe one of the other youngsters will surprise in camp (Hat Trick Dick? Is that you? You ready to commit?), or Kenny will pull a retread out of his, um, hat.
Personally I think someone like McCarty , Downey, etc, should be the 12th forward, but that’s just me.
It does sound like Hudler really is gone, which is surprising.
