Home Again, Home Again

Back in Michigan for a week’s vacation…which is why I’ve avoided each of you for more than five days.  Consider this a brief interruption before I get back to remaining unshaven and 12 ounces heavier.

Two guys. Two “snipers”.  And a couple issues.

First.  Oompa Loompa’s playing hardball?  Is that what I’m to understand?  He’s calling press conferences and somebody’s (his agent no doubt) saying he’s KHL-boundGeorge, of course, is on it and will stay after it.

We dig you Happy.  You’ve become a favorite of the 19 and we’d like to see you make some money.

We would have also liked to see you score just once in your last twelve playoff games.  Because, write this down, a “sniper” who doesn’t “score” doesn’t get to be “strong-willed” or “stubborn”.

In other words, take the money Tick Tock offers you, be a Red Wing and do your job in the playoffs.  When you do, the payday you think you deserve might come.  Or it might not.  Maybe it never will and maybe your real reward is playing on the Best Team in Hockey and being a millionaire while you’re at it.

So, STFU about the KHL talk.

How about this?  See this?

“After a while, he didn’t want to be in the (AHL) and lost his enthusiasm for being there,” Holland said.

Tick Tock Kenny’s talking about Ville Leino and that quote rubs me wrong.  I’m wondering.  When Leino is on the third line, or even the fourth, and his minutes aren’t what he believes they should be because he’s got a little issue with backchecking, is he going to “lose his enthusiasm for being there”?

Mark this down.  Leino is going to spend the occasional evening hour in Uncle Mike’s doghouse.

As I told you, I’m vacationing back in Michigan and it’s awesome.  In St. Clair Shores until Thursday then it’s Up North for three days with five of my friends from high school.  My wife is promising me she’s going to be counting the amount of times she has to shake her head at me and say, “Bill….In. Appropriate.”

Oh, and I had a run-in with a Wing yesterday.  More to follow on that because it was funny and I want to do the story justice.

Almost forgot.  If you’re feeling “real lowdown today” (I’m back to quoting Seger because, bitches, I’m in Michigan)...consider this:  47 Tuesdays until the Cup comes home.

well well well, it seems Mr. Hossa has opened his big mouth once again and blabbed about his newest former team. All year Wings fans complained about Pens fans boo-hooing the fact that he left b/c he basically effed them over at the opening of free agency, signed w/ the team that had just vanquished him, and then said that he did so b/c they were better than Pittsburgh. He found out the hard way, and I hope Detroit crushes the Blackhawks EVERY game for 12 years. I know that Wings fans are trying not to take his signing w/ the Hawks and “real hockeytown” comments to heart, knowing that being openly upset about it makes them “no better than Pens fans”, but God, what an absolute d!ckbag that guy is. There, I said it.

Nah, not buying it. He just said it was great to be in a hockey town (two words), as in “it’s great to be here and not Los Angeles where most people don’t give a crap.” The guy’s just weirdly honest. After signing with Chicago, he said that it wasn’t for the salary cap, he would have signed with the Red Wings. (I’m surprised that didn’t raise more eyebrows.) He doesn’t give a damn about rivalries or how painful it was for Pens fans to see him jump ship last year or how Wings fans would feel about him going to Chicago. It’s not on his radar. Does that make him a dickbag? Not in my book. He’s just in some sort of Slovak cloud cuckooland. I don’t hate him, just like I don’t hate Kane or Sharp or, god bless him, that defensive ‘tard Brian Campbell. But I do hate the Hawks as a collective, and I’d like the Wings to beat the shit out of them every opportunity they get.

Besides, I know it’s irrational, but I’m still more pissed off at Hudler.

Wise words Bella, I couldn’t agree more…
But that Chicago thing….
I’m tickled pink to see them turn that organization around, just as I would be happy to see TOR and MON get their sh*t together.  It just means we will see more quality hockey.

I’ve always admired Hossa’s talent and the way he handles himself.  You always have to make allowances because not all people express themselves well.  Hossa has always been handicapped by unreasonable expectations.  Now that the Blackhawks are playing in Scotty’s shadow, I am hoping that will change.

I knew you guys would come around.

Boo him as loud, as long, and as often as you can during the home opener (for sure), if not every single time the Hawks come to town.  Twice as much in the West Finals, as I’m assuming history repeats itself (on more than one level).

It’s fun.

It’s therapeutic.

Do it.

This. There’s no reason to boo Hossa, except that he’s a Hawk. Boo the team, sure, but not the player.

And speaking of Campbell, Bella, I’m thankful to see him on the ice because it means good chances for a defensive lapse. More stupid spin-o-ramas, please.

Sounds like there’s a healthy amount of the 19 displaced to Chicago. I’m thinking maybe we try and wrangle up a table at the Tin Lizzie for the JLA home opener v Chicago. Lord knows we can walk all up and down the streets in Wings apparel with no trouble whatsoever from the “great fans” of this “hockey town.”

1st post here. This is a freaking great blog, and since I’ve moved to Chicago 4 years ago this has been one of the only damn place to go and read some “real” Wings talk. Back to the quote, THAT sounds like a plan dude! Us Wings fans in Chicago should try and get a bunch of tickets and hit up a game too. I have worn my wings gear here the whole time I’ve lived here, I live in a condo and have a window at the bottom of my stairs (everone in the building has to walk by to get outside) with a huge picture of Capt. Nick hoisting the cup.( hahaha suck my balls) Anyways nobody said crap to me untill this year! (With the exception of every Wings game at the United Center.)
To chime in on some other topics, yes I did not expect Hossa to be with us in reality, but to go to Chicago really pissed me off. I knew as soon as I heard, all these newbie ass clown’s would be talking mad shit. We know he was a great regular season guy for sure, but THIS is your ticket to the finals? Hossa? I really was pumped about him being on our squad last year b4 the season, I got my Center Ice package to watch the mayhem unfold, at times our team was amazing, but I always had this wierd feeling that the gel we had the previous year was somehow not as strong as it was. He just is not a “team” guy in my opinion. He is a greatly skilled player but wants to take the whole load on his shoulders which usually ends up with him skating one handed circles in the offensive zone for 5 min. then occasionally taking a very low percentage wrister through a guys legs, or turning the puck over to show how tenacious of a backchecker he is just to get it back and repeat the same. BAHHH I am glad his salary will F the chickenhawks for years but I still hate the retarded comments these newbs have to say. LETS—-GO—-RED—-WINGS!!!!!!

I believe hudler wants 4 mil and the wings case was for 3. So i think if the ruling is for anything less than 4 mill, we’ll take it.

is he even worth 3?  I mean, we all love him and his tenacity, but he’s so small.  is 4 goals and 8 assists in 23 playoff games with a +4, after 23 goals and 34 assists in 82 regular season games with a +7….worth $3 mil?

that means his per-game production went down from .28 GPG and .41 APG to .17 GPG and .35 APG.  we all know that the playoffs are not as friendly to small players as the regular season is.

personally, I don’t think he’s worth over $2 mil.  seems like we could get a couple big young forwards for $3-4 mil total who WANT to be in Detroit, are willing to buy into the system and accept “role player” roles in exchange for WINNING.

Posted by PaulinMiamiBeach on 07/20/09 at 01:37 PM ET

PaulinMiamiBeach's avatar

He always has the option to sign the contract.  If Holland knows he doesn’t want to play here (even though he said he didn’t want to play for any other NHL club), then we’ll let him walk into unrestricted free agency and he heads to Dynamo.  In the end we MAY lose Hudler, but we HAVE lost valuable time to get other things done while being handcuffed by this situation. Thanks Gary.Ass.

are there circumstances under which the Wings would receive draft picks or some sort of compensation if Hudler leaves?  I thought that was the point to restricted free agency, and what the Wings are hoping to keep a grasp on.

assuming I’m correct and that’s a possible outcome, it seems there are three outcomes for the Wings…

1 - Hudler leaves and we get nothing
B - Hudler leaves and we get something
III - Hudler stays

personally I think option B is the best.  we don’t want a player who is not happy in Detroit.  seems clear he doesn’t want to be here, so let him go.  but we should get something for him.

Any more than 1.5 is a waste.  He is too much of a defensive slacker to play on the top six.
Too much of a lightweight to get regular ice time.  Too streaky for reg PP assignments.
Useless against really big teams like Columbus and Anaheim last year.  They threw him around like a rag doll….He tried his best, but when he tried delivering a body check he just bounced off and landed on his ass, and that was always in the offensive end of the ice.  When he does backcheck he is just an annoying little bug on the big forwards windshield.

B - Hudler leaves and we get something
III - Hudler stays

the problem with B:  In a typical situation where another NHL team wants to take the RFA from the original team (with the original team not wanting to meet the contract), they could do so but would have to give up draft picks based on the players new salary.

For example:
- In 2008 a team signing a restricted free agent to a salary averaging $2,615,625 to $3,923,437 per season will lose a first-round draft pick and a third-round draft pick to the player’s old team.

http://proicehockey.about.com/od/nhlfreeagents/a/nhl_free_agents_2.htm

But obviously if he goes to the KHL we can’t exactly receive those draft picks, sooooo i think we’d just be sol. I mean, we know he’s not going to another nhl team so there’s no way we can get draft picks.  Our only hopes of getting something is if he stays or if he leaves asap and we use that money for someone else (i.e. dandenault).  And for the 3-4 million huds would cost we could get Dandenault and Shanny…..or as you all would like: Grier.

Posted by Itrusteddrrahmani from Nyc by way of A2 on 07/20/09 at 06:05 PM ET

or as you all would like: Grier.

I have been wanting Grier in the Winged Wheel for a long time.  I think he would be a perfect fit and exactly what we need (3 of).

10G 13A in 62 games with a +8.  and only 25 PIM.  responsible numbers.  he’s getting on the older side but I’ll bet he would love to come to an atmosphere like the Red Wings, and his numbers would probably improve in our system.

pickins are a little slim right now considering the Wings don’t currently (officially) have a roster with enough forwards.  but anyway, I’d probably put him on the third or fourth line with Abdelkader and Helm.  probably sneak Franzen onto the ice with him once in a while too…and definitely Ericsson and Stuart on D with him on the ice as much as possible.

obviously I’m a fan of overloading with size as much as is feasible during a game.  especially early.  wear ‘em down then let Datsyuk and Zetterberg loose.

Posted by PaulinMiamiBeach on 07/20/09 at 11:46 PM ET

holy crap.  Kindl is 6’2”?  had no idea.  what are the odds he’ll play some games with the big club this year?  can he play forward?  maybe Ericsson could turn into a Dandenault and play up front some.  he could definitely handle the minutes.

and why is Big Jonny only listed at 6’4” on detroitredwings.com?

Posted by PaulinMiamiBeach on 07/20/09 at 11:49 PM ET

is it legal to play three defensemen and two forwards instead of the other way around?

the more times I look at this…

http://redwings.nhl.com/team/app?service=page&page=TeamPlayers&type=roster

...the more worried I am.  Kenny is going to have to work some magic.  in a flash we lost a ton of depth at forward.

for players who played regularly last season, only 9 forwards and 6 dmen are listed.  oh, and one goalie.

yikes.

Is it just me, or is it SUPER badass to have a Stanley Cup video library section marked “Archives”?

Evening 19, been laying low on the Gore, thought I would pop up with a few thoughts.

First off, I haven’t heard much about Dandenault lately.  Recently at KK this post linked to a list of the top 40 FA still available, yet no Dandenault.  Also on other lists he is notably absent.  WTF 19?

Grier and Dandenault are my Wings shopping list.

Secondly, I understand some of the 19 are going through withdrawal in the absence of the Chief, but get a hold of yourselves.  I know it is a beautiful summer with sun and all, but control your boredom 19.  Stop talking to trolls.  Let them post all they want, just go about your day.  Trolls are a waste of bits and bytes on the Pipes and Tubes, don’t risk carpal tunnel feeding any of them.  I expect the 19 to cease all further dialog with trolls at least until the regular season starts again.

Thirdly (is that a word?) the up and coming dish that is taking North Americans by storm the past year is Pho soup.  A Vietnamese beef and noodle soup, it is delicious and cheap.  I recommend “Pho Tai, Chin” which is rare steak (cooks in broth) with well done brisket.  They will serve fresh thai basil, culantro, bean sprouts, and lime wedge as garnishes.  Dump in some leafs, squeeze a bit of lime into the soup, and go nuts.  Find a good Pho restaurant in your area and forget all about take-out burgers and pizza.  Your pocket book, stomach, and waist line will thank you.

Back to the summer, 19.  As usual I will check in regularly to catch up on your comments.  Ciao, bitches.

Maybe you forgot, we won two Cups in the 90’s. So I too have an archive. And one of the items in my archive is quite a bit NEWER than any of yours.

How did it feel to watch Sid raise his first of many Cups after winning a game 7 on the ice of your beloved Joe Louis Arena after being up 2 games?

That must eat all of you up inside. It will haunt you forever.

We keep hearing that, but it doesn’t it.  As we’ve said before, we aren’t as pained by this year’s loss as the Pen(i)s fans were with their loss in ‘08, for seemingly obvious reasons (perhaps not to a pens fan).

As far as ‘watching Sid raise the Cup,’ I simply didn’t watch it.  So I can’t tell you what I felt when I watched it, I was preoccupied at that particular moment getting drunk.

As for the Cups in the 1990’s, I’m 100% certain you, like 99% of Pen(i)s fans, do not own memorabilia from that era.  Call up Murph and tell him to send you your copy of the Finals in those years.  Just pray he’s not smashed enough to send you the wrong one by accident…

Datsyuk won the 2008 Plus/Minus award according to my research, Paul.  Anyway, Chief will be back soon and we can all go back to our normal “Slow Season” routine.

So very tired of the trolls.  One more reason to hate the off-season…school being out.

Damn dude.  I was just feeding them, not carpet bombing them!  Hahah that’s almost too much once you see the individual awards in one list.  Not to mention Hall of Fame inductees.  Not to mention all the Team Accolades.  All-Stars, and so on.

Anyway, good word.  And Animal Drew, I’m a fan of the blog.  When I started following this blog religiously a fellow Wings’ fan asked me “If you’re so passionate, why not start a blog of your own?”

Creativity, or lackthereof, was my response.  Also, I’m too lazy to update things.  But I love all of the Red Wings’ blogs that can I be redirected to from here.

Did you guys see this?

http://blogs.dailyherald.com/node/2302

The Hawks are monitoring Hossa while he rehabs the injury, believed to have been suffered during the playoffs.

Hmm… so he was injured during the playoffs?  Your thoughts?

Thanks Jenny.  My thoughts:  I win!  I win!  Hahah, I love being right.  It feels so good.

Oh and PaulinMiamuh, hate to be of bother once again, but I think we’ve retired a few jersey numbers as well, perhaps sufficiently referenced in your earlier pic, but if not:

1 Terry Sawchuk     G
7 Ted Lindsay       LW
9 Gordie Howe       RW
10 Alex Delvecchio   C
12 Sid Abel           LW
19 Steve Yzerman   C

And who are we kidding?  By the time they are happily retired, we could be seeing Nick Lidstrom’s 5 up there along with Henrik Zetterberg’s 40 and Pavel Datsyuk’s 13, and maybe even Ozzie’s 30.  In other words, running out of rafter space and numbers is a real concern in our Organ-I-zation.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y.
