Hossa:  One Year Wonder?

For those of us (yes..us, meaning “me”) hoping Marian Hossa has every intention of signing a long-term deal for about 6/year, just so he can stay part of the glorious Wing family?  Umm

“I look at it like I’m here for one year,” Hossa said after an informal skate with some of his new teammates. “During the year, we’ll see how the cap room is going to stay or move. Then we’ll talk with the GM (Ken Holland) and see if they like me to stay here or I like to be here, if I’m a good fit in the group. We don’t know yet. We’ll see in the future. It’s tough to say right now.”

Key words:  Cap. Room. Stay. Move. Holland.  Don’t. Know. Future. Tough.

I just kinda pulled those out.  Let’s use them all in a sentence, eh?

Here’s what he meant to say:

“Want me to stay? Holland better get tough and make sure the Cap moves, and I mean moves up.  Way up. Know when? In the near future.  If not, my pal Kopie can rent that room out starting June 15th. Don’t like it?  Tough.”

One more word we might use soon?  Mercenary.

Predictions: make ‘em.  Real simple.

What are the chances Marian Hossa re-signs with the Wings?

You know my fears about Ville Leino being this year’s Igor Grigorenko?  Well, this just in from Snapshots:

The #21 worn at camp last year by failed prospect Igor Grigorenko has been given to Finnish player-of-the-year Ville Leino.

Oh, I don’t feel good about this at all…

Andrew,
A few things about Grigorenko that I keep reminding myself of.. is that he was a highly touted prospect for a a few years, then the car accident.
Leino has all but come out of nowhere, so there’s less pressure-expectation & Leino wasn’t brought over with the “make it or break it” mantra like Grigs. That kind of try out and the cultural shock is tough… and if you don’t like earning a roster spot playing in GR, you won’t be a Wing.
We have a long list of pretty talented guys who slogged away in the minors to EARN the roster spot.

Yeah, that’s true—Grigs was seen as a “can’t miss” prospect, another Hakan Andersson gem, before the accident, but hype wasn’t really my worry.  It was that Leino, given that he has a similar “out” in his contract, had the same attitude towards the AHL and the grind there that Grigorenko did.  That if he wasn’t on the NHL roster, he’d go back to Finland.  Obviously, with that kind of attitude, he wouldn’t make a Babcock team and good riddance anyway, but I don’t really want to see another signing go to waste on another attitude problem (though I concede to the few fans Grigs may have left that it was probably other factors outside of his control, along with attitude that sent him back to Bashkortostan).

However, more from George today makes me think that instead of emulating the last #21, he’ll show the last #21 what he SHOULD have done:

“He seems to have great hands,” Mike Babcock said. “He can score. He’s worked like crazy all summer to get stronger and quicker. We like good players.”

So he’s impressed Uncle Mike with his work ethic and attitude.  Not bad at all.

“My goal is to play here,” said Leino, who turns 25 next month. “I’ll do what it takes. Maybe it takes time. Whatever it takes, four weeks, four months, I’ll try to make the team.”

Whatever it takes.  Good attitude.  And he seems to speak English, which is an edge he has on Grigorenko already.  I’m not convinced that he’ll make the NHL roster at all barring injuries, or if he does that he’ll be higher than the fourth line, but between him and Brunnstrom, I think we got the better deal.  So there’s a little of that apprehension dissipated.

Chief, have I scared you off or caused your head to explode or something with my rant about politicians?  Or did you accidentally wander into the LHC and are now stuck in a black hole?  Hello?

Is that a bad thing?  I have been told to go a few places but never there.  Had to get GOOGLE cranked up to find that one.  It’s right there with teh other Stans. Da.

So where’s the Chief???  Sheesh, guy buys a boat and disappears….there’s an olde sailor’s tale.
