How’s The Hate? Want Some More?

I’m not sure the Gore could handle it, but George Malik points us to a Pittsburgh Tribune-Review ditty that focuses on the joys of a Wings/Pens trifecta.
The loathing between these teams and their cities has only begun to boil, so, no, it cannot end now.
Loathing? I can dig that. And here’s the thing. As this rivalry gets meaner and even more intense, that’s a good thing for the league. There are is no middle ground with any hockey fan anywhere. You hate the Wings, or you love the Wings. You genuflect in front of a Sidney Crosby poster every morning, or you admit he’s a pathetic example of what a captain should be. Not much neutrality there.
The fans of each team are getting there. We’ve seen what a rivalry looks like, before Denver tanked. And Pittsburgh’s in the midst of a few of their own with Philly and Washington. We have Chicago yapping a bit and I suppose Columbus could eventually evolve into a hate-fest.
But this one has awesome potential. All the ingredients are there: exceptional skill, playoff history, rabid contingents of fans rapidly developing a healthy level of hate, dislike between superstars, and the very real possibility that each team could be very good for years to come. There’s also respect. We point to players like Talbot, Orpik and Malkin as examples of clutch play, grit and huge talent. Pens fans can admit there are players on the Wings that scare and impress them at the same time.
Rivalries between Eastern and Western Conference teams are tough to sustain, mainly because they’ll probably play just twice, if that, during the regular season. If Gary.Ass had any marketing instincts at all (what an idiotic “if” that is) then he’d make sure Wings/Pens happened twice every year until this thing has run its course.
Another SCF between the two is statistically unlikely, but Detroit is as close to a guarantee as you can find in the West while Pittsburgh might be able to avoid Boston again and find their way to the Final, as well. There is that gnawing feeling, though, that things are a bit unsettled. Pens fans, misguided as they may be, point to last year and claim their team was all nervous and shell shocked for Games 1 and 2, and had they not been so uneasy, they would have won the series. Naturally, they’re forgetting that the Wings owned much of Game 5 and all of Game 6.
And Wing fans, at least those of us here, will not back down from our view that injuries, officiating and even a little help from Sidney’s Daddy contributed to a Pens Cup win.
So a third one could potentially settle that. A home-and-home in January would help set the stage. And don’t forget the Olympics in February. If Canada and Sweden meet for the gold? Who do you think is going to be all over Crosby...again?
All the ingredients of a traditional rivalry, plus a few added bonus hate points. Awesome.

Morning Sig. We remember you from yesterday. Just took a few minutes to look over your last several comments (all under various names, of course). You’ve done a bit of whining yourself. I can place them here if you’d like. Just say the word and I’ll get on it.

I’m hoping more than anything that Jack Johnson will get to “finish the job” against Canada after every knucklehead north of the border was calling for his head after he destroyed Steve Downie (of all people) with an open-ice hit during the junior championships. They were calling Johnson a cheap-shot artist and a lowlife sticking up for Steve freaking Downie and turned him into a cult hero in Canada. The US doesn’t stand a chance in hell of doing anything unless Ryan Miller plays out of his mind but it’d be a dream to beat Canada on their ice.

Somethng that Wings fans and Avs fans can agree upon!
Any “captain” that is the third man in going for a nut-punch needs to have his C taken away.

The Western Conference has toughened up the Wings. Had we played in the East over the past fifteen years, we wouldn’t be looking at four Cups. In turn, the Wings have toughened up the Western Conference.
And if we’re going to have a dead-on blood feud with anyone like we had with the Dive, I’d just as soon have it with some team with a less pansy-ass name than the ‘Penguins.’ Please. Hurricanes, Bruins (bears), Rangers, no other team has as much of a wussy name as that. It’s one reason why the Ducks rivalry hasn’t really materialized...with a name like that, it’s tough not to laugh.
And the Chief is armed with IP statistics now, bitches. It is so ON.

And thusly, he earned the moniker “Cindy Crotchby” here in Atlanta. I believe he only served a two minute roughing penalty for punching Atlanta defenseman Boris Valabik in the stones.

here’s the problem. we don’t play them but, what, once or twice in the regular season? what fuels rivalries is frequent competition. notice that the other teams you mention as potential/past rivalries for the Wings are in the same Conference. same goes for Pittsburgh regarding Philly and Washington.
to have a truly heated rivalry the likes of which the Wings had with Denver, you have to stir the post more often than we get to with Pittsburgh.
Posted by PaulinMiamiBeach on 06/19/09 at 09:36 AM ET
Greg, Thrashers fans are very passionate about the team and the sport. The problems with the team are much deeper than most people realize. Atlanta is a good market, and the Thrashers would have better support if it weren’t for crappy ownership and management.

II got thinking about it more and more, and was wondering… would the Wings face anyone in the Eastern Conference that could stand up to the Ducks? For that matter, could Pittsburgh have gotten through the Ducks?
Philadelphia? Although they don’t have the goaltending Anaheim does.
Boston, maybe? They were good enough defensively this past year, although that might have been a one-shot deal.
Montreal, no - Rangers, no - Ottawa, no - entire southeast division, no - Capitals? not strong enough defensively ...
I don’t think so. The Ducks are a very strong team.
Imagine Getzlaf’s stats if he had a chance to rampage through the Eastern conference.

As a Pens fan, it would be great to see this rivalry contrinue (mainly because it would mean return Stanley Cup trips...therefore no Stanley Cup trips for the Caps and Flyers).
Even with how good the Wings are, it may be tough for them next year. I’m no scientician, but with 2 Finals in a row, plus the Olympics next year, that would mean the majority of the Red Wings will have played literally 1,000,000 games in 3 seasons. That has to be tough on anyone.
Also, do what Pens fan tries to say that the Pens being shellshocked lost them the series last year? The superiority of the Wings over the Penguins last year lost them the series.
And for everyone who brings up the Gary Bettman / Cindy Crysbaby (HAHA!) thing...I understand why you get pissed about that. I probably would, too. But there is probably a reason that the Chernobyl-Head of Pavel Datsyuk isn’t plastered all over NHL posters all accross the country. Also, Ovechkin gets just as much love...if not more...than Crosby does.

I said in an earlier post that I would be intrigued to see a 7 game series between these two, but I never want to because that would mean that they would be playing for the cup (and I don’t want either team to win another one)...but can you imagine if Perry, Rob Neidermeier (dead!), Sasquatch and the rest were doing to the Pen(i)s, what they were doing to the Wings in that WCSF? You think the refs would have put their whistles away for that one? Doubt it, or Gary’s baby boy might not have lived to see his 22nd birthday.

I really would have loved to see Abdelkader continue to get ice time. Those two goals he potted in games one and two were some great goals, and who knows what he could have done throughout the rest of the series.
Coulda’, woulda’, shoulda’.
If he was ill, however, that would be a good reason why he wasn’t playing.

Well, good experience for the future for him.

Pronger vs. Crosby. Crosby is shorter, so that means he would inevitably get an elbow to the head, right? Playing “guess the suspension length” would be fun in that case.
********
@ Alan -
I think the ownership in this case is talented enough to pull off both. There aren’t enough synonyms for horrid to describe them in the English language.

Good post. I agree with all your points. I think the odds of the Wings and Pens meeting in the final again, let alone either team getting back there, are pretty slim, given both teams have played what, about 250 games the last two years? And they are both loaded with players that will be on Olympic rosters. Brutal for both clubs.

don’t worry, we’ll get to see plenty of him next season. along with Helm, too.
in fact, maybe Kenny and the two Mikes can lobby the NHL to expand to Grand Rapids. considering what we saw of the Black Aces this year in the playoffs, I’m guessing the Griffins could hang in the middle of the pack at least.
at least an exhibition game between Grand Rapids and Denver.

The unsuspendable player performs the inifinitely suspendable action. It’s a paradox.
Say what you want about the Olympics, I’m looking forward to what the Mule will do in a Tre Kronor jersey since he’ll finally get a shot in the Olympics, not the WCs. A gold will net him membership in The Triple Gold club.

I just don’t understand how Little Gary continues to steer this ship. He’s driving it directly into icebergs, rocks, other boats on a consistent basis. You’d think the BOG would figure this out and can his worthless ass…
Those awards were the biggest sham I’ve ever seen. Just so poorly done in EVERY aspect.
I’d LOVE a Det - Pitt rematch next year. Best of three where we’ll put them directly back in their place. I think its more likely that most imagine. Detroit will still be dominant and with Tick Tock running the show still, the Offseason is going to only make the Wings better. The Pens have some cap room, might be able to actually keep the players they acquired at the deadline, sign some of their defensemen that showed up big in the playoffs, and maybe even acquire more depth on the blue line. If they’re able to avoid Boston we might just see a rematch next June…
Is it October yet?

And Drew, they did mention that Gator (Abdul Qadir) was out with the flu, so that makes sense.
The flu is a virus. Anti-biotics wouldn’t do anything, except evolve greater resistances to anti-biotics for the rest of the population. Yet, for an athlete I guess the ‘give it to him anyway’ attitude wouldn’t be surprising.

CaptNorris,
I’m more worried about the Capitals in the East next year than the Bruins. The Caps have a lot of room to work with, especially in Nylander goes to Russia. They also have assets that they could move to get a shut-down defenseman or a very good #2 center....which are the two pieces they are missing.
The Pens actually don’t have a ton of cap room, and what you guys saw this past season will pretty much be what you will see again next year. Rob Scuderi turned himself into the most overrated D-man of the post-season, and Hal Gill is all but gone. I actually think the Pens D will be a little better next year, given the fact that once those two are gone, they will be able to move the puck better than they did this past season.
My early prediction would be to say a Wings-Caps series next year, but I still think it’ll be tough for the Wings to get there with the Olympics.
If you guys do play the Caps, I can almost guarantee that you’ll hate Ovechkin as much...if not more....than Crosby. Wait until he charges from 100 feet away to take the head off of one of your best players, or he throws a hard knee at Lidstrom or Rafalski. You’ll also appreciate how he just pulls up a lawn chair and sits at the blue line.

Yes, but people call EVERYTHING “the flu” - even a stomach flu, which is impossible as by definition influenza is a respiratory illness, and the stomach has nothing to do with it.
Probably as much of a catch-all as upper or lower-body, and they might have given him antibiotics to ward off a respiratory infection or something.

At first, it looked like there was a little nub on the bottom of the first U and was expecting just a poor choice of shadows for that font. But if you look at the “Ryan Kesler”, in the same font, the Y is quite obvious, and rides higher than the u’s. Thus, I agree with your conclusion.

I think the “starting overseas” thing is a convenient excuse, but has no basis in reality (just like the “short summer” excuse for playoff teams which, btw, Babcock doesn’t buy into either). one single trip like that shouldn’t impact someone’s performance many months later. the Olympics, however, due to their length and timing I could see affecting a player in the stretch. the good news, of course, is that they’re in Vancouver so travel isn’t as big an issue like it would be if they were in Europe or Asia.

Another SCF between the two is statistically unlikely, but Detroit is as close to a guarantee as you can find in the West while Pittsburgh might be able to avoid Boston again and find their way to the Final, as well.
And I start to laugh as I realize that the Wings will never really have to worry about ducking (or even facing) the Sharks.
