I Tried The High Road Again. Crazy, But It Still Sucks.

I’ve decided I’m not going to complain about the officiating for the rest of this series.
But Saturday night, after it’s over...maybe Sunday morning? We’re going to have a little chat, you and I, a little confab to discuss just how pathetic this has been.
We’re going to talk about a Pittsburgh player skating right by Dennis LaRue while he’s pretending not to count, and we’re going to discuss a blatant two hander to Johan Franzen’s head, and Hal Gill. But we’re going to wait until Sunday so we don’t have to hear the....you know what? Screw it. Let’s talk about it now.
I don’t give a flying fu** what the reaction to this statement is going to be. I don’t care that Pens fans are going to copy, paste and comment here and anywhere else when I say this, or that any other group of Wing haters will use it as an example of our “elitist” views and our feelings that we’re “owed something.”
Ready for it? Good.
The Detroit Red Wings are going to win this motherfu**er and they’re going to do it despite a blatant league agenda to arrange circumstances that would hand the Cup to Sidney Crosby and Pittsburgh.
Game 3 is the most glaring example we’ve seen of it. You’ve seen the images, but I’ll show you again. Look at Dennis LaRue. He’s staring right at Eaton as he skates off. Staring right at him.
Caps fan put that up over on the empire main page.
You may have heard the rumblings by now, that one of the linesman actually said something to a Pens player. Something to the effect of, “you’ve got too many”, instead of blowing his whistle.
Apparently, Wing players heard it. If that’s the case? Stand by. Because this whole “conspiracy theory” is going to blow up. If the Wing organ-I-zation goes public with this, that an official actually warned a Pittsburgh player of an infraction rather than call it? Yep. Stand by.
It is a Blatant. League. Agenda. How does Johan Franzen get crosschecked, in the head, in front of a referee and it doesn’t get called? How does Jonathon Ericsson get whistled for the most candy-ass interference call of the series, but Hal Gill is allowed to hold up every single Wing player crossing into Pittsburgh’s zone chasing a dump in?
There is nothing more frustrating than this. Nothing. No feeling in the world is quite so useless than watching what’s happening and not being able to do a frigging thing. Has there been a statement from the league about the too many men thing? Have they acknowledged it at all? I haven’t seen it. If not, why?
And what of Kunitz’ hit? We’re just completely ignoring hits to the head now? Any statement on that? No? Tell me, if that had been Kronwall crosschecking Gary’s Baby Boy in the head would that have at least warranted a penalty, if not a suspension? Oh, and what the hell...how about Malkin and Zetterberg, while we’re at it. Forget the instigator rule, the “rescinded suspension”. How about the fact that before he started tossing his weak ass lefts and rights Malkin used his stick to attack Zetterberg? Let’s just overlook that, eh Gary? God, Bettman, you’re a frigging joke.
It’s an agenda. Is the “fix in”? I swear to god I wish I could type that. But I can’t. I can’t because it’s too hard to believe. But something’s rotten. And it’s not just poor officiating. Nobody can be this bad, this consistently, not when they’re supposed to be the best at what they do.
And here’s one more thing. The Wings are gonna win this and they’ll do it to spite the league. There is no doubt in their mind, just like there is no doubt in ours, that whispered directives have resulted in some horrendous “mistakes”, and they’re going to win so that all summer they can share a chuckle that the league tried to do bad things when the lights went down on the cell block, only to find that the skinny guy in red wasn’t going to resist so easily.
I tried to hold off on this. I did. For 24 hours I was a good boy and tried to stay “above it all.” But I don’t have it in me and all I can do is hope the Wings are as furious as the rest of us. Gary Bettman’s trying to take the block of cheddar they’ve earned and hand it to someone who doesn’t deserve it. Do the Wings understand that? Can they rally around that?
Yes. This bitch is done on Saturday. In Detroit. In Hockeytown.
This thing is finished like it should have been last year. In 5 games.
Stanley skates on Saturday motherfu**ers.
2 to 12 and suck on it Gary. Looking forward to seeing you waddle on the ice to the chorus of 20,000 boos you little pisspot.

and as a pens fan, im glad to know the refs are always on our side and we’ll never get hosed.
Agreed. You won’t. Feel free to stop by Sunday to discuss.

i dont know. a non call like the too many men penalty i think is far too blatant to call it a fix. even the biggest idiots in the world, heck, even NBA refs with money on the game couldnt openly let that go. they straight up had to be lost right there. if there is a fix, its getting away with hooks, trips, that sorta junk. i mean 21 seconds? you couldnt even sleep at night if thats the case. or maybe it was the even up for the zetterberg cover. who knows. that call just seems far too ridiculous for it to have been on purpose.
i mean, that would be just as asanine as a perennially awful baseball club trading away their lone young gun claiming that they’re trying to “rebuild”. wait a minute…

What, Chief, did you start to miss the filthy trolls coming around, so you decided to throw them some bait? Well, you know they’re too stupid to resist, and here they come a’rollin’ in…
Looking forward to seeing you waddle on the ice to the chorus of 20,000 boos you little pisspot.
Yeah, like Gary has the guts to present the Cup at the Joe. You just know that if we win tonight there’ll be people smuggling bricks in on Saturday hoping for a lucky shot at his chrome dome. My guess is he sends one of his toadies, or else makes some crap up about ‘Legends’ and we get someone we can respect, like Mr. Hockey or Red Kelly.
or maybe it was the even up for the zetterberg cover
Best theory I’ve heard so far from a Pittsburgh fan for why an absolutely blatant. penalty wasn’t called, and why they may have even been assisted on it. We’ll never know because our players who were on the ice, and the organization as a whole, has too much class to come right out and say it, but it wouldn’t surprise me one bit.
When Uncle Mike goes on his hunting safari this summer, I hope he bags at least four zebras.

you know what. you guys are right. you were right all along. that missed call is the exact reason why your PK sucks. its also the reason why fleury weathered the storm in the 2nd when detroit clearly dominated but nobody could bury it. if it wasnt for those 21 seconds the score might’ve been 45-0. its the reason why talbot scored the opening goal. seriously. it was. obviously. this penalty is the reason why 911 happened and the economy collapsed. but you have too much class to cry a whole lot worse than crysby about it.
get off it already. you’re still up 2-1 and have played consistently better all series without your best player in the lineup. its amazing. one loss and you detroit guys take a dump in your coveralls. 21 seconds. seriously. you’re all bent out of shape over 21 seconds. 21 seconds where nothing happened. if the pens score with 6 guys on. ok. cry. il even hold the tissues for you. but come on. this is ridiculous. you cant possibly think that the wings will blow this because of 21 seconds can you? you cant possibly, after playing the way you’ve played, winning the first 2 games in solid fashion without so much as a doubt, really believe that the “fix” is in and the league is out to get you? you’re acting like the pens got awarded 200000 power plays during a four game sweep.
when the pens lose, can pens fans bitch and moan that “if we had hossa we woulda beat you”? i think its fair if you’re going to cry about 21 seconds.

Give me a friggin break. The Red Wings get away with interference more than any other team in the league. It is absolutely pathetic. I have lost count over how many times they’ve done it in this series.
Kronwall is their interference leader. The dude pulls it off just about every game when the puck is long gone and he hits a guy by the blue line. And Holmstrom hasn’t gotten away with goalie interference… yet. But you know that’s bound to happen pretty soon. He gets away with it a lot more often than he gets called for it. The Wings have been pushing the NHL on this thing for years, and the league never does anything about it, so Holmstrom and company just keep doing it. I won’t blame the Wings on this - but the NHL is a joke.
“After this series is over after Sunday”? Hahaha. We’re tying this thing up tonight. This series has been pretty even and the Red Wings have gotten a ton of breaks.
Like Zetterberg basically playing backup goalie and getting away with covering the puck with his hand and body twice, without being called for anything. Consider yourselves lucky. They should really consider making some better rules for this.
The too many men non-call was completely harmless. Nothing happened on that play. It was a mistake by Talbot - he shouldn’t have been on the ice - and the refs missed it or wanted to keep the play going. If the latter is the case, it’s hardly the first time referees have let teams off the hook for too many men on the ice infractions in the playoffs. Get over it. One missed Wings power play. Waaaaaah.
You better hope you can continue to contain Crosby tonight. We have outshot the Wings in 2 of the 3 games and could easily be the team that’s up 2-1. We’re in this thing and then some and he hasn’t even been a factor yet.
So considering everything, it’s amazing to see the arrogance continue from Wings fans, but not surprising. This is a fanbase who believes their team is the New York Yankees of hockey… If the Yankees of course had gone 42 years without a championship and had won 1 series in 20 years.
And let’s not even go into their constant bragging of the number of Stanley Cups they won - as if those 7 Cups they won when the NHL had only 6 teams means anything today in a 30-team league when comparing Detroit to an expansion team (if anything, it means that the Canadiens and Leafs owned them most of the time). The score is 4-2, not 11-2.
And to those Wings fans who think this should have been a sweep - you’re in for a rude awakening.

please LGP. the last thing this blog needs is a pens fan complaining about missed interference calls.
i think zetterberg cover, hey whatever im not a rules genius, but kind of a crappy miss.
letting the pens have 6 guys for 21 seconds...refs are incompetent idiots. it is what it is and sucks for wings fans. ok.
complaining about interference, hits, trips, hooks, blah blah blah...eh. pretty lame. get over it.
dont give them anymore than they already have, man. and then dont come out and say the pens are going to destroy them. at best the pens can “hang on” for a win.

Gosh, I wonder why that is…

Hahaha. We’re tying this thing up tonight.
Come on back tonight when you do.

Wings aren’t losing tonight. Wanna know why?
Same rationale I’ve brought up before. I think I brought it up yesterday at some point.
Marc Joannette is reffing. He’s the Detroit Red Wings MF’ing guarantee.
Game 5 vs. Calgary, 2007: W 5-1
Game 5 vs. San Jose, 2007: W 4-1
Game 6 @ Nashville, 2008: W 3-0
Game 2 vs. Colorado, 2008: W 5-1
Game 2 vs. Dallas, 2008: W 2-1
Game 6 @ Dallas, 2008: W 4-1
Game 2 vs. Pittsburgh, 2008: W 3-0
Game 4 @ Pittsburgh, 2008: W 2-1
Game 6 @ Pittsburgh, 2008: W 3-2
Game 1 vs. Anaheim, 2009: W 3-2
Game 7 vs. Anaheim, 2009: W 4-3
Game 4 @ Chicago, 2009: W 6-1
Game 2 vs. Pittsburgh, 2009: W 3-1
That is 13-0 since the 2007 playoffs when Joannette is one of the refs.
Wings aren’t losing tonight. And then they’re going to unleash the hounds on Saturday. And if by some mishap it doesn’t end then, it’s done in 6 when Joannette is the ref again, just like last year.
Speaking of which, happy anniversary bitches. One year ago today, Stanley returned.
Posted by EFWolverine from Dearborn on 06/04/09 at 03:51 AM ET
ya, i dont know.
it wont be as easy as game 4 last year.
crosby. who knows. i dont know what his deal is. i guess babcock has to pick and choose. malkin is doing his job right now. if all crosby can do is eat up all of zetterbergs time to free up geno, then whatever. its opened some space up for him. babcock wants that matchup so bad. and its worked to a point. so long as one of the those guys is scoring, it makes it kind of moot to me.
the thing that is kind of interesting to me is that last year the pens couldnt even generate a single freaking chance. they couldnt even get it over the blueline. so far they’ve had a few chances. and osgood got beat 3 times from behind the arc. so when that happens you’re a stick or a skate away from a game changer of a goal.
the thing about detroit is that they never ever ever get away from their game. up 5 or down 5, 2 minutes in, or 2 minutes from the horn they stay the same. the pens at times have just gone completely haywire, doing stuff they never do when they win. they’ve tried to get too pretty, pass up shots for passes for what looks like a higher percentage play just to get it tipped away instead of just doing what theyve been doing and putting it on net, and putting crosby and malkin together at the first sign of struggle. thats the tale tale sign.

If all goes well, Billjag, Crosby will have to worry about Zetterberg, yes, but...Malkin will probably have to worry about Datsyuk. With those two playing guard dog to your two stars and us shutting down not one, but both of them, and maybe Hossa having one of his traditional Game Fours, it doesn’t look good.
Or maybe it’ll be completely different. On paper, it looks bad, but this is why they play the games.

The Red Wings get away with interference more than any other team in the league.
I’m assuming that you have some sort of proof to back up that statement, correct? Or do you just like throwing out outlandish statements because you think it makes yourself seem cool and knowledgeable about hockey?

Nope. We are not even close to Yankee fans. Its obvious that you don’t know many Montreal fans or you wouldn’t have made that statement.
as if those 7 Cups they won when the NHL had only 6 teams means anything today
Please, I beg you, visit a Montreal message board and try to explain to them that none of their pre-expansion cups count. While your at it, visit a Yankees board and explain to them that their world series championships along with Babe Ruth and all their player records, they don’t count either.

see LGP? i knew you’d get cut up out there. save it for the LGP board.
i highly doubt datsyuk actually plays center if he plays. my money is he goes on the wing for the majority of the game. if he couldnt play three games of the finals...then i cant believe its good enough for him to jump right back in at center.
i still think the wings will win it. but i think the pens have as good a shot as ever to win tonight. they’ll come out with it. they’ll never dominate, but they can hang on.
Posted by billjag from jagtown on 06/04/09 at 04:29 AM ET
i highly doubt datsyuk actually plays center if he plays.
Agreed. He’ll probably play on Filppula’s wing, with Hossa on the other wing. Still doesn’t preclude him from being all over Malkin like a nouveau-riche Armani suit bought in a Moscow boutique. All it means is he won’t take the majority of faceoffs. If he plays a primarily defensive role, it frees up Wally and Hoss to cook up the offense with the chemistry they have. And with Malkin’s line not being much of a defensive unit, this looks good.

That picture says it all. Sucks to be Gary and his Minions in the Internet Age.
Win the Cup, Wings. Win this thing, and then shove that mother right up the asses of every media member and NHL exec that supports risking the integrity of this historic league for some artificial outcome, all in the name of promotion and the Almighty Dollar.
Shove it up their asses real slow.

Sup everyone,
Just updating you all from 100 degree India. I wake up, sweat, eat and sleep. Oh, and drive in some tiny clown cars too. Fun stuff.
Ref jackassery is at an all time high and I doubt we’ll see much better tonight. I’m going to try and wake up at 5 to listen to the game. Neither Ken Kal or Paul Woods caught the too many men either. They also made it sound like Hossa had a solid game and TTD disagrees. Wish I could watch the game.
I’m looking forward to seeing what Dats can do tonight. I know injuries are part of the process, but man having Dats prove that he’s the number one Russian in the league against Malkin would have been sweet to watch. Oh well. Time from the Rooskie wRecking ball. Look for Dats to throw some big hits to get himself in the game and be useful even if he can’t dangle normally.
Personally, I think Hossa is playing for a contract right now. Between signing him and keeping our depth, our Depth is winning. Kenny has to see this. We’ll see what happens but, man, that’s a really rough choice.
more later.

The reffing has been TERRIBLE!!!!!!!!!! Everytime I say something though, non-Wings fans just say I’m being too biased blah blah.
The Ericsson call should never have happened. I don’t blame the refs for the loss, I blame the refs for not giving the Red Wings an opportunity on the power play in the last ten minutes after calling a SOFT penalty on them. The Cooke hit on Helm should have been at the very LEAST a minor penalty. Orpik elbowed helm pretty good too. And that’s not even considering the penalties Hal Gill should have been given. Wow.
Here’s the blog I wrote about it…

I posted this on the last board, and I apologize for the obscure reference to an independent movie.
But the moment I saw that replay right after the game, in which a linesman and a ref are looking directly at eaton for a good 7 seconds, one from no more than 20 feet away, was the “Turn the recorder off” moment from “Starter for 10”, in which a college kid in a big trivia faceoff against cambridge or something is being fed answers and answers one too early, and correctly.

Nobody can be this bad, this consistently, not when they’re supposed to be the best at what they do.
I was watching NHL Live and a fan had called to comment that never in his life had he seen too many men for that long without a call. Billy Jaffee then had the nerve to tell the caller that since he(the caller) wasn’t able to see the entire play that you can’t blame the officials. And that the officials really probably didn’t see it either. Of course the caller was a Wings fan so they had to cut him off as usual.
This is what the officials get paid to do. Officiate. It is their job to see everything. That is why they added an extra effing referee.
There is no way in heaven that the officials just plain missed the call. They seemingly didn’t make the call on purpose. Complaining about officials is not something I do often, but this one takes the cake.
Lets Go Red Wings!!!!!

Kate,
I heard that also and e-mailed them right away with my thoughts how “the human element” Jaffey likes is not the refs, the true human element are the great athletes we admire, RUINED by the “human element “ called officials. It doesn’t matter much in basketball where the screwy score is 109-103, but it matters a TON when a game is tied at 2-2.

After the huge miss with too many men, the league needs to suspend that ref team for the rest of the series. Get some alternate refs in there. Otherwise, their integrity is at stake.

I woke up at 0200 and started an argument with my wife, a playoff game day ritual that’s worked out to the tune of 14 wins. She really enjoys it.
Then I couldn’t go back to sleep so I turned the tv on as loud as possible in the bedroom then headed downstairs to make coffee. She wasn’t happy about that either.
By that time I was ready to “get some work done” from home because I knew I wasn’t going to get jack squat done at the office. Instead I started thinking about the officiating and I went back upstairs and turned all the lights on, then hurried back down. That really pissed her off.
Wrot e the post above, done by 3:45 or so, did some hygiene stuff, kissed the wife, apologized for tormenting her but explained that it’s something I have to do to get the stress out on playoff game days. Certainly, she understands, right?
Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.

For all you know that linesman didn’t know Eaton was a 6th defenseman. Your little obstructions don’t get called either. You were beat. You beat us 2 times. Period.

For all you know that linesman didn’t know Eaton was a 6th defenseman. Your little obstructions don’t get called either. You were beat. You beat us 2 times. Period.
And I’d like to point out the jinxing here with all the predictions and no way we are losing things.

Thank you, Professor.

Instead I started thinking about the officiating and I went back upstairs and turned all the lights on, then hurried back down.
You are such a f@kcer Chief. That is why everybody loves you so much.
Lets Go Red Wings!!!!!

I’m with Baroque on what she said over at OtW: the League didn’t want a sweep. The fact that it was the Wings they could screw with the refs incompetency (I think you give those guys a little too much credit--"Nobody can be this bad, this consistently..."--these guys are complete morons who have just ramped up the idiocy per the “no sweep” directive.) was just icing on the cake.
The linesman talking to the Pens is appalling, but so is the hand motion LaRue makes to Devorski after Eaton gets off. Sort of the universal “nah” signal.
The other blown calls could be marked down to idiocy and blindness. But that too many men situation was willful collusion.

You know, I was thinking. We don’t have to sit anybody to dress Draper and/or Datsyuk tonight. The officials can’t count to 6; 21 or 22 is surely beyond them.

a minor penalty counts for 2 minutes.
spoken like a true Pens fan. I guess, to you, momentum and psychology have nothing to do with how a game flow along for that 60 minutes. unfortunately for you, anyone with a brain and any experience with hockey understands it.

Hi! Welcome to A2Y.
Lol… nice Andrew. I would have followed it with “And don’t let the sliding door of the Hasek Car hit you in the ass on your way out.”

or maybe it was the even up for the zetterberg cover.
it was not a penalty. I’ll post it again.
NHL Rule 63.2
...Any player who drops to his knees to block a shot should not be penalized if the puck is shot under him or becomes lodged in his clothing or equipment…

you’re all bent out of shape over 21 seconds.
I’m quite sure if the Wings got away with too many men on the ice, blatantly, for 21 seconds...and you had a photo of two officials looking right at the sixth guy leaving the ice...you’d be all bent out of shape. and you’d be in the right for it.

About Abel to Yzerman
Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome:

"I realize it’s the slow summer season, but can this guy tone down the tough-guy histrionics? His posts are fatiguing on an otherwise excellent site."
--A2Y Fan, Eternal_Fields
"I constantly marvel at how Bill (IwoCPO) and his disciples at Abel To Yzerman can be so pompous and full of themselves throughout every regular season, but come playoff time they collapse into wavering puddles of stress and nervousness as they anxiously await the impending and unavoidable collapse of the Red Wings in the post-season."
--Mile High Hockey
"I hate them because they are better than us. Of all the frigging teams…"
--In The Cheap Seats

"I really don’t care what fans or bloggers think."
--Drew Sharp
"Why is it you Detroit fans are still so classless when you have such a classy hockey team, with such a professional GM and gentlemen players? I understand that the author of this blog is a manner-less cad, but the rest of you should be better."

thank god.
and no i dont think there can be any “fix” on. its been so equally bad its almost unbelievable. that being said, i personally get passed that quickly. apparently others do not. calls are calls. a minor penalty counts for 2 minutes. theres 60 minutes in the game. so if a penalty, or uncalled penalty, “costs you a game”, you’re a joke. theres probably 75 other things a team could’ve done better in a 5 minute span that, hey, you do one them differently and that penalty doesnt even matter. people just put wayyyyy too much emphasis on penalties. its okay, teams win and lose calls both ways.
and as a pens fan, im glad to know the refs are always on our side and we’ll never get hosed. HOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
