Last night, early in the game, I saw a little bit of the Stevie in Zetterberg.  Everyone else said “Dangle Dangle” but I thought “Yzerman”.  He made up his mind to take the puck to the net and did whatever he had to to get there.

I miss Steve.

Stevie playing with a football sized knee got those other lame-ass Hall of Famers through the Vancouver series in 2002 and on the way to the cup.  His last series versus Edmonton he was one of the best Red Wing players on the ice.

Some nice HHOF personal profiles on nhl.com.  One of the articles about Yzerman discusses The Unthinkable, Stevie Y taking up an offer to be GM of another franchise, and also the possibility of Jim Nill.  The part I put in bold symbolizes much of what is the Red Wings Identity.

“In my mind, I’m lucky there are three of us that are qualified to be general managers,” Holland said. “Steve Yzerman and Jim Nill have made a decision that the success of the team is more important than the success of their own individual careers. Now at some point in time everybody has to make a decision that they feel they are up to the next challenge and they are looking for the next opportunity.

“Come the summer of 2010, who knows what Jim Nill and Steve Yzerman will be thinking? Do Steve and Jim want to wait until I’m finished? Is there some type of different creative management team that allows everyone to stay here? Time has to play itself out, but if Steve wants to be a general manager or president, certainly he’s ready to oversee a hockey team.”

RWB: Malik had a good post on this same topic, “NHL.com posts three superb articles about Hockey Hall of Famer Steve Yzerman”.

Check out the discussion on being a captain:

Nicklas Lidstrom, who took over as Red Wings’ captain following Yzerman’s retirement, remembers one particular play in that game (Yzerman’s final game, Game 6 of the 2006 Western Conference Quarterfinals in Edmonton) that showed Yzerman’s will, determination and skill.

“I remember some of the plays he made, and one in particular when he was going around (Chris) Pronger, taking Pronger wide and going around him,” Lidstrom told NHL.com. “Pronger looks like he’s huge compared to Stevie, but even though Stevie was hurt and banged up, the determination really showed. He was just going to go around that D and take the puck to the net and that’s what he did. I had seen him do that numerous times, but in this game, his last game, I saw that determination again.  I thought he was one of our best players in that game. He played 13 minutes, but the shifts that he had, you could really tell he wanted to play a strong game.”

When the final buzzer sounded, Yzerman knew in his heart he was done. He said his desire to play remained, but his body wouldn’t let him.

“What it came down to is: Could I contribute enough to this team to help win the Cup?” Yzerman said. “As much as I wanted to continue playing, I knew I couldn’t keep up at this pace anymore. It became a real struggle for me to try to do the things. Particularly my last year, I had a heck of a time to stay healthy to get in the lineup.”

In a sidebar story, Lidstrom also discussed Yzerman’s influence upon his captaincy…

“He would step up and say things at the right moment and when it was needed, but the most important thing is he would back it up on the ice,” Lidstrom told NHL.com. “He would lead by example, and I think his determination really showed when the game was on the line.  I’m not overly vocal either. I’ll try to say something at the right moment and try to talk in the locker room as well, but what I try to do most importantly is lead by example, lead on the ice.”

Do you think another certain player who wears a “C” on another certain team can respectfully make claim to this characteristic?
(Didn’t think so.)

Stevie Y. - THE Captain.

Time to bitch.

I’m sick of hearing about Sidney Crosby.

I’m sick of people mentioning Sidney Crosby.

I’m sick of people alluding to Sidney Crosby.

I’m sick of his face in every single dod damned NHL commercial.

I’m sick of announcers bringing up his name during every game imaginable.

I’m sick of the main stream hockey media sucking him off at every possible opportunity.

I’m sick of Sidney Crosby.  Period.

Here’s a new idea:  THERE IS NO SIDNEY CROSBY.  He doesn’t exist.  We’re not going to mention him.  We’re not going to reference him.  We’re not going to allude to him,  sure as hell not when we’re talking about Stevie.  And do you know why?  BECAUSE HE DOESN’T PLAY FOR THE RED WINGS.  This is a Red Wings blog.  We don’t talk about politics, and we don’t talk about Sidney *#$%@& Crosby.

We play the Pens a few times a year, at most, in the regular season.    When we play his team, fine, we can mention him.  It’s normal.  Every single day the rest of the year, every year?  Not so much.

monkey, while I have to agree on principal, your cause may not be successful.

I’m sick of his face in every single dod damned NHL commercial.
I’m sick of announcers bringing up his name during every game imaginable.
I’m sick of the main stream hockey media sucking him off at every possible opportunity.

And that is why.  I view the 19 as witty Red Wings and hockey fanatics.  We also comment and joke about pop culture and cool stuff constantly.

When the Jackatoreum was on our TVs nightly, we made jokes.  When Pavel was telling us who to trust, jokes again.  When the Douche Canoe is on his knees between the benches.  Jokes and hatred.

And when we are inundated with all things Rosby, because the NHL saw fit to put all their marketing eggs in one whiny basket.  We have no choice, the jokes and comments will fly.  Not to mention how mockable the Pens trolls are around here.

So when Rosby is no longer shoved in our faces incessantly, we’ll stop making jokes.  And I’ll be ecstatic when that happens.

VooX, I love the atmosphere of this blog.  The Jackatoreum is funny shit, no question, and makes the atmosphere fresh and wonderful.

Sometimes, though,  you can have really good atmosphere, but then someone starts farting.  Now, I’ll be the first to admit I think farts are funny.  But not all farts.  Some farts are just nasty and have no place.

So that’s what this is about to me.  If we took what I said and applied it literally all the time we might miss out on some good ones, and that would probably be taking it too far.  We need to know the difference between jokes, farts that are funny, and farts that are nasty.

Save the ozone.  No more nasty farts.

A quick Google search of “Rosby” reveals some interesting “co-incidences”:

Rosby wines

Small typo, should read “Rosby Whines”

The blogger profile of Rosby the Magnificent.  Please note the self-description:

About Me:
Welcome to Wild and Wandering Thoughts of a frizz-laden loon; the window into the mind and ramblings of an eccentric and geeky teenager. I don’t visit here nearly as much as I’d like, but if you pop in every so often, you can read my scribblings on life, films, school, man-candy, and squee about dashing Timelords with huge…blue boxes. Please bear in mind I have greatly matured since some of the earlier entries; if you’re keeping a blog during your teenage years, your diary style is bound to change. Anyway, enjoy.

Rosby is going through changes.  His chin pubic hair is thickening.  He’s starting to notice other “man-candy”  (Brooks Orpik?) and he is a frizz-laden loon who plays dungeon master in Mario’s basement.
