If We Could Only Make Whitefish Bay…It’s The Live Blog Nobody’s Looking Forward To

Filled with anticipation for this one, are ya?  Been looking forward to some late-night Wing brilliance to cap off a pleasant afternoon?

No?

I didn’t think so.  How’s this for fun? Ready?

None of you even wants to watch this game.  You don’t want to put yourself through the anguish or the pain.

You even told some people today that it might be time for a brief respite. Time to put the pipe down and attend a meeting or two.  This crap’s not doing anybody any good.

That probably lasted until about dinner time.  That’s when reality set in and optimism started to warm you again. It’s only October.  They put up 49 against a hot goalie.  Jimmah looked….good.  The defense looked…better.  The Unibomber was on a mission.

And it was the power play, of all things, that failed us.

See? That’s your mind playing sick tricks.  You’re gonna watch it.  And you’re going to hope the last one was the last one.  That the last game against Denver was the “one to turn this thing around”.  I opt for that.  It’s what I believe and how I choose to live.  I saw a team on Saturday that looked fast and aggressive.  I saw a team on the verge of breaking out of this pisspot.

And call me naive but I think this ends tonite.

We got 15 miles behind us bitches. I see the lights of Whitefish Bay and I’m telling the cook to get his fat ass back down to the kitchen where he belongs.

It’s a Live Blog.

Well said, Perfection.  I agree that Franzen’s injury gives all those guys more time to really build that team chemistry.  The timing of his injury (and considering my own rose-colored take on how fast he’ll be able to recover) basically makes him that missing piece trade deadline pickup that many successful teams get at the deadline.

I actually see May sitting at home in a big red leather chair wearing a smoking jacket, sipping brandy and reading the collected works of Tolstoy.  For a tough guy out there, he’s really soft-spoken.  He kind of reminds me of that Foundation for a Better Life commercial where Stu Grimson sings ‘The Itsy-Bitsy Spider’ to his daughter over the phone.

I’m trying not to expect too much out of Eaves too early.  I know he’s got 20 goal potential, but right now I like his limited ice time so he can really see first-hand the effort it takes to work in our system as well as getting used to the system.  Dan Cleary wasn’t an overnight success either.

Williams is a flat-out improvement over Sammy at the point and I admit I did not expect that.  J-Will knows better how to move to an area of the ice to open up a shooting lane (where those tip-ins will eventually start happening), but he doesn’t try to do too much out there.  Sammy had a really bad habit of trying to dangle on the blue line, which is just about the worst place on the ice you can do that.  No question William Tell is having a nice run in Vancouver and has more points than J-Will, but he’s also still being paid significantly more and getting big minutes.  Given all the options at the time, I can’t look back and say that there would have been any way I would have been happy with the Wings giving him $2.5M per.

The only question mark I have with Perfection’s post is Gator. Like others have said…he desperately needs to go back to Grand Rapids. He will not get better with limited ice time.

Heres something you are sure not to see everyday:

James Howard 0-2-0,  2 ga, 22 sa,  20 sv,  0.909 %

Roberto Luongo 6-5-0,  5 ga, 42 sa,  37 sv,  0.880 %

Player G A +/-
Justin Abdelkader 0 0 EVEN
Todd Bertuzzi 0 1 -2
Danny Cleary 0 0 -2
Pavel Datsyuk 2 1 3
Kris Draper 0 0 EVEN
Jonathan Ericsson 0 1 1
Valtteri Filppula 0 1 -2
Tomas Holmstrom 1 1 2
Niklas Kronwall 1 0 2
Brett Lebda 0 0 1
Ville Leino 0 0 1
Nicklas Lidstrom 0 0 2
Kirk Maltby 0 0 EVEN
Brad May 0 0 EVEN
Brian Rafalski 0 1 -2
Brad Stuart 0 0 -2
Jason Williams 1 1 1
Henrik Zetterberg 0 1 2

The usual suspects (Big E, Lebda) weren’t the minus players last night, which is amazing.  Of course Osgood didn’t do anyone favors in that department.

Dats = magically delicious.

Sooner or later, Bert will break through, that or he will erupt into a freaking killing machine; either is fine by me.

Brad May kinda/sorta reminds me of the days of Kocur, and those are fond memories.

The PP goal, Wally - Willy, was amazing for the fact it wasn’t from “the point.”

I think it was the first G/A on Howard that was “soft”, but other than that, I thought he was stellar.

Who would have thought Jimmah would outshine “Bin Luongo”.  Agreed HTT, that is a damn ugly mask.

A ROAD WIN = more sacrifices to Jobu.

Jobu should become the 19’s official mascot.  He give good mojo last night.

Brilliant.
You’ve hit on many of my own gut-feeling impressions thus far.
(Wish I could articulate them as well. Good job.)

Just one thing, ...

I wish you would be a bit more optimistic.

(Seriously, a good, concise write-up. Now don’t wait so long for your next 2-cents worth. Your upbeat approach is refreshing around here.)

Here’s to another “W” Thursday.
/clink/
(Not too early is it?)

I’m gonna go against the grain with most of the 19 here but I was glad to see Williams return. I think he got a bad rap leaving last time (though admittedly, he brought it upon himself), but his play was good - high energy and intensity. I like that he’s brought that part of his game back. And I think time is healing the wounds of his mouth.

Yes, I noticed this omission, too. I think Gramps has been spot on - he (Abby) needs more upper body strength, time to mature physically. No doubt he has good skills and the right desire / drive. But he often looks a bit man-handled. I’m sure this is being worked on with the trainers and conditioning staff.

BTW - Any word if May did or did not have any hand injury from the fight?
(Geez I hope he’s OK. We need ‘the stand-up-for’ guy.)

One more thing, that I failed to shine my spotlight on the painfully obvious.

Ridiculously impressive “comeback” last night.

After those two “softies”, I immediately thought doom, gloom, and here we go again.

The Wings really “manned-up” and I half/mostly expected them to “mail it in.”  Says alot about the mindset of the team.

Indicates to me, they are “keeping the faith.”

Besides 4 in the third, something deliciously different was going on last night.
Three (3) down low goals, Wings seem to have cut the number of shots from the point.
What I saw, anyway, anyone confirm?

Posted by HockeyTownTodd on 10/28/09 at 10:07 AM ET

J.J. from Kansas's avatar

I’ll confirm that.  There was significantly more traffic around the crease all night and the Wings were actually trying to move the puck into the slot.

Agreed and thank god for that because Raf was turning the puck over like a motherf**ker last night…he did not have a good game.

How sucky it is that my home internet is worst than at the office? No wonder why I’m so unproductive…

Well, about the team: those last 2 games were totally Wingslike.

-Denver: 49 SOG, hot goalie on the other side prevented a 8-1 Detroit win.
-Orcas: seems like last season, shootout on the scoreboard, bad PK (statiscally), backup goalie hanging tough, road win.

And ‘bout my boy Helm-is-God… maybe Babs wanted to shock, and Helm was the biggest “sittable” name. What creeps me is that Eaves was out too, and Yabatheskater (the guy we talked through the whole summer as a Griffin) was in. What’s that?

If we make this happen,
I’ll put my order in for 2 - Large Ts now.
