In A Musty Old Hall In Detroy-it They Prayed…It’s A Game 5 Live Blog

I had every intention of going with Seger. But..I gave it some thought this morning and I’m thinking it’s not time for a change. Lightfoot got us here and he’ll get us home. I love that line, and was going to save it for the Finals, but thought today was a good time to break it out.
It’s a Game 5 Live Blog. In a musty Joe Louis, 20,000 are praying for a trip back to where the Wings belong.
Press down. Hard.

Kudos to Tippett for rearranging his defensive pairing against the Circus, pretty much shut down the last 2 games and turning the series around, almost as much a factor as 2 questionable calls involving Holmstrum have changed momentum in the series.

The Wings just played like there was no way they would pass on another trip to TX. They must have a great cathouse in the Dallas area.

this series has me pondering all the other times we’ve seen an entire series turn 180 degrees from one play, on freak goal…or one freak non-goal.

Don’t pay any attention to that leak in the ceiling of the Hasek car. My ‘astronaut Depends’ didn’t work as well as I hoped they would…

this is more like the playoffs I remember…losing control of your life during the awful 48 hours following a loss.

PaulMiami this series turned 180 degrees on the bogus disallowed goal on Holmstrum.

Homer did not play like himself today. The bad penalty aside, he was just plain bad.

RWBill, yes, but that’s an excuse. No room for excuses. And this loss can’t be blamed (much) on the refs. The Wings didn’t play like Cup contenders. It’s not the refs fault. It’s not Dallas’ fault. It’s not Gary’s fault. It’s not NBC’s fault.
The Red Wings blew it. They need to win this, but they’re content with laying back and waiting for Dallas to lose it.

Concussion or not, Franzen needs to play. I’m just sayin’.
Posted by ludmeister from Kentucky on 05/17/08 at 03:31 PM ET
Franzen. In Game 6. Needs to play. I’m so frustrated, i can’t even finish my own sentences. Crap it all

Red Wings. Need. To find. Their. Mojo.
Scotty. Beam me down.

Hey Chief. With all the discombobulated stuff we’re spewing here… we really need a MBCQOTD. Something, anything to cut the stress.
Just shoot me now.
Posted by ludmeister from Kentucky on 05/17/08 at 03:57 PM ET
Well, that was awful. And very disappointing.
But not entirely surprising. Our 3rd defensive pairing costing us yet another game? Hmmm, Chelios leaving for a line change, GWG scored seconds later… game 3 against Bubba Jr. anyone?
They basically turned the tables on us after that. Their defense shut us down, we couldn’t muster much of anything, and just as the anti-digger foretold, we are now a one-line team.
Cleary and Holmstrom are really hurting us right now, McCarty with only 3:39 TOI, Franzen needs to come back pronto. I’m not quite sure we get through this series without him, or does Babs need to break up the Circus line now? Tippett made changes for games 4 and 5, it worked for them, now as others have noted, Babs needs to respond for game 6.
PS – Love the blog Chief, love the A2Y 19! Nothing like a demoralizing loss to force me to make my first comment and hop on board the stress train

Someone needs to whack Chelios in the knee with a pipe so he can’t play and continue to be the other team’s top assist man.
Posted by cis429 from Denver on 05/17/08 at 04:15 PM ET
I blame a 12:30 CST start for this loss. Would it make TOO MUCH SENSE for the NBC Douche Brigade to have the game AT NIGHT, LIKE GOD INTENDED? But OH NO, the MEDIUM season finale is tonight! Brilliant network execs think America prefers to watch a past-her-prime Patricia Arquette make POOPY FACES..
/still blowing off steam. Christ what’s wrong with me?
Posted by Matt from Chicago on 05/17/08 at 04:42 PM ET
Take today and vent.
Then, wake up tomorrow and remember that the Wings are still leading this series. Dallas is still on the brink.
I would be shocked if the Wings came out and played three bad games in a row. This team has enough veterans and talent to end the d*mn thing already.
Posted by Kat from Chicago on 05/17/08 at 04:51 PM ET
Still PO’d
Hitting golf balls off the roof of the Hasek. Train will be rolling south later tonite back to that armpit on the north side of Dallas…Liberty Station.
Two more martini’s and I’m heading for the baggage car with a nine iron. Sorry, Older Than Chelios….it must be done.

Take that, Detroit hex.
Gotta admire Marty for overcoming so many playoff series hexes, although, as a Stars fan, I am not delusional about our chances of winning it all.
But it was a nice kick inda nutz for Wings fans (my fiance and his sister being two of them)

Maybe one day you just wake up and realize that your goaltender is still just Chris fricken Osgood?
The wings were fine until today. Now the noose should be tightening.
Posted by Bob from Boulder on 05/17/08 at 09:20 PM ET
the Wings were worse off in round 1, tied 2-2 with Nashville. and what changed?
hmmm…
Posted by PaulinMiamiBeach on 05/17/08 at 10:12 PM ET
Dammit man…. How did I miss my stop? This train was supposed to be pulling in to the station for a few days. How am I supposed to do my Inorganic Chem final on the floor of the Hasek monday night? I mean sure, there’s plenty on the floor that could lead to a research job, but come on. Will someone please think of the children?

Bah, hours later and I’m still mad. Still I said Wings in six at the beginning of this whole thing. I’m just not so confident now….

Did you watch the game Bob? Which of those goals were Ozzie’s fault and not, say, a big defensive breakdown? How many other defensive breakdowns were there that he bailed us out on?
Oh, and in case you didn’t see this little tribute from a Wing’s fan in Brazil:

I’m with you Chic; still mad and heartbroken. Georgeums hasn’t posted his usual exhaustive coverage either. I’ve lost a lot of confidence and I’m going to blame that on Baroque and that jivetalk about “pride goeth before the fall” nonsense…
Posted by Osrt on 05/18/08 at 01:51 AM ET
Osrt—
In my book the blame goes squarely on Gary, Ass.‘s shoulders. I’m never watching another NHL playoff game if the Wings don’t win the Stanley Cup this year. Not while the AssMaster(TM) is commishing this league.
I was really impressed with the performance of Happy Hudler and Darren Helm last night. Oh, and Datsyuk had a couple of dandy hits, as did Drake and Kronner. We had some good performances last night, not to mention Chris Osgood keeping us in there.
That said, it looked like the Wings were resigned to lose that thing for the last 30 minutes of the game. I still want to know why Kronwall was leading the charge into the offensive zone in a 1-on-3. Our offensive zone presence just wasn’t there (19 missed shots didn’t help). If they can be better than Game 4, they sure as hell can be better than they were last night.
My playoff watching future depends on it. Ah, and the ignorance of some Dive fans, eh?
Posted by ludmeister from Kentucky on 05/18/08 at 08:28 AM ET
I still want to know why Kronwall was leading the charge into the offensive zone in a 1-on-3.
all our D were pressing. somebody needs to whack Chelios next time he takes the puck deep into the zone.
Kronwall can get back Lebda can get back. Rafalski can get back. most people don’t realize Lidstrom can get back (since he rarely seems to actually take a stride).
Chelios? he can’t get back. hell, he can’t catch up from center ice. how a 45 year old D with all the experience he has, blows a line change like that, is beyond me. bad mental mistake.
basically, the D was pressing because the Wings were off their game. WAY off their game. chasing around, standing around, playing as individuals. Dallas played as a team. supporting each other, giving each other outlets. Babs needs to get the Wings back to that.

Poor Boob. Must suck to have to root for another team to do the heavy lifting that the Vagalanche couldn’t do.
Posted by O-Joe on 05/18/08 at 02:21 PM ET
And wasn’t it the Stars that the Vag knocked out of the playoffs two years running a few years ago?
Yes, I believe it was.
Gee, that must suck even harder for poor Boob—watching the Vag’s former bitches advance to the WCF, something the Vag hasn’t accomplished since 2002 (when they were defeated by, well, you know).

“I would be shocked if the Wings came out and played three bad games in a row. This team has enough veterans and talent to end the d*mn thing already.”
Stars fan here,
I just thought i would lay some trivia down right before your eyes. Now im sure you have heard of the whole “33 years curse” but theres something else. 33 games before the game 4 of this series (first star win in series) was the start of a 4 straight losses by your team. The game before that skid started you guys won, but you lost 6 games straight before you got that win, and the team that was last to beat you on this skid was none other than the dallas stars.
Just thought i would throw that out there, now here’s to a game 7, this series deserves it.
Posted by Starsfan from Dallas on 05/18/08 at 04:15 PM ET
heres to a series that ends in 6. heres to sending the 07-08 dallas stars into the teams that are forgotten. who remembers the sharks just the last round that won 2 in a row? i can guarntee they felt pretty damn good after forcing a game 6 against you guys. well… that didnt last long as we all know and i hope you think realistically. if at the beginning of the series you were told if it was 3-2 wings heading back to dallas how would you feel. me being a wings fan would say hell yea ill take that, we got two chances to finish them off. and thats exactly what we got. good luck. GO WINGS

The only difference between SJ and this series, is game 6 is in Dallas, SJ was playing an away game. And since game 6 is on Dallas’s side then it would make it easier to tie it up and go in with all the momentum in the world for game 7.
