Introducing “Bubba” To The World

I’m pretty sure Bubba doesn’t read the New York Times.  I feel pretty darn comfortable saying that.  I’m also fairly certain they’ve never visited PensBlog, because Bubba’s a little sensitive.

So I doubt they’ve had a chance to see the serious-minded comments we made when asked to preview the series at each of those spots.

NYT Slap Shots

Any history between these two teams?
Bubba’s been second fiddle (so to speak) to the Wings for 10 years. They’ve led a playoff series and lost. Led the division multiple times … and lost. Every game against Detroit is a “statement” game to Nashville, and yet they’ve made none. This series will be no different.

Do your fans have a special chant or song or motto for these playoffs?
The Wings marketing geniuses came up with, “Are you in?” Maybe they stole that from a Tennessee family reunion T-shirt.

I guess mainly because we understand the rules of society, where Bubba doesn’t. For the most part, we keep our hands off our relatives, don’t eat meat that’s been prepared on the shoulders of our nation’s freeways and we have much more depth from line one to four. Dan Ellis worries me a bit, but not enough to see this going any longer than five games. Nice story that Bubba made the playoffs. We’re happy for the less than one percent of Tennessee who have any idea what hockey is. But that’s where it ends…again.

Chief—You’re truly a worthy ambassador for all Wings fans out there.  It’s almost a little sad picking on Bubba…there’s just so much material…but it’s playoff time.  No mercy.

anybody else wish it was Thursday already?

here’s a scary thought: in less than 2 weeks, possibly as little as 8 days, we’re either going to be…

or…

While we’re on the topic of what’s coming up in the non-Motown media…

Caught this article (in my URL) on AOL’s Fanhouse.  This site is consistently dismissive of the Wings.  They certainly keep that up here, though a few of their “experts” at least point out that Detroit is deeper than Bubba and will pull this thing out.

Interesting notes…

1.  They seem to LOVE the Dive (which reduces their credibility to about…eh…0)
2.  There is a great line in there about how Kipper is a weak goal tender.  Money quote:

“Jes Golbez: It’s time to stop giving Kiprusoff so much credit until he proves that he deserves it…I wouldn’t want to have to count on this guy.”

That killed me.  Fanhouse is usually a great source of info, but the hockey coverage, while plentiful, sucks.

I’d be confident counting on him.  “Kipper” is an appropriate nickname, because he has the demeanor of a tranquilized smelt, but he has dealt with Mike Keenan without going ballistic (which a lot of people didn’t think he’d manage) and despite his bouts of normal human fallibility he’s been excellent this year.

Especially for a team that doesn’t seem to be much more than Kipprusoff, Iginla, and Phaneuf.

Again, gotta say that I love the endless “Bubba” stuff. Comedy gold. Keep it up. Don’t run that into the ground. Do not!

It’s gold, Jerry. Pure gold, I tell ya.

Thanks for reminding us, PredNeck, how much Bubba fans are just like Banyon…always feeding off the hard work of others. Tell me, do you guys serve Roundteen at the SoGay?  smile

the demeanor of a tranquilized smelt

As soon as I read this I knew the poster had to be Baroque — who else would know anything about the demeanor of a smelt, tranquilized or otherwise?

Mostly it has been since my college days, but I’ve netted smelt, cleaned smelt, fried smelt, eaten smelt, and thrown away too-many-left-over smelt.  My roommate and I even kept live smelt in the kitchen sink for a few days.  Still, I have no clue as to their demeanor.  Though, maybe that has something to do with the fact that I was usually the tranquilized one.
