Is The End Near? Not So Fast

The Red Wings have earned 11 out of a possible 14 points. Won four of their last five games outright. Allowed more than 1 goal in one of those games. A win tonite vaults them into 6th in the conference. And yet…
But the slide theory is gaining traction in Detroit largely from within, combined with a critical view of the standings.
That’s Tony Gallagher of the Vancouver Province. By and large? It’s an even-handed article. It’s hard to fault any writer who’s reacting to Jimmy D.
I mean, the guy spouts off and what is the media supposed to do, let it go? Nope. And in Gallagher’s case, he’s given some credence to the idea that Devellano either has (a) an agenda or (b) 6 working brain cells. Either way, he found some reaction and I dig what he dug.
Many took the comment to mean the home advantage all the way through, in other words finish first in the division. But when the comments filtered down to the players, Chris Osgood—you know, the goalie who allegedly can’t play but who happens to have three Stanley Cup rings and five Cup final appearances—took it to mean in the first round.
“Maybe,” Osgood told the Detroit News when told of Devellano’s miracle comment, “but even if we start on the road the team that gets us won’t want to see us.”
Hell. Yes. I never saw that comment, but it could have appeared after the Wings lost Saturday night and we all know it’s against my personal code of ethics to blog the day after the Wings lose.
Gallagher’s column is good and it should serve as a warning to teams electing to take the Wings lightly, especially once they start getting healthy.
But for every great sign they show, there is also something disquieting. Every time you remember they’ve had another short summer and started their season in Europe, they put a game like last Saturday night on your plate.
Shortly after this team gets back to full strength, the real Red Wings will make themselves known to all.
But no matter what the answer is, Osgood is right: Nobody is going to want them in the first round.
And let’s not forget. The Wings haven’t been at full strength since before the Chicago series. Careful what you wish for.

About Abel to Yzerman
Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
