Jimmy D: “We’d Be Happy With A Top Ten Pick”

Well, he didn’t say exactly that. But pretty damned close. You’re gonna love this one.
“We’re going to have to fight just to make the playoffs and it’s going to be a grind,” said senior vice president Jim Devellanno, the first person owner Mike Ilitch hired when he bought the team in 1982. “To get home-ice advantage would be a miracle. A miracle.”
A miracle, he says. A miracle.
Home ice throughout? Or home ice off the hop, via a division title or the four seed? Because if it’s either of the latter than Devellanno’s even further gone than suspected.
Jimmy D doesn’t stop there. He says a playoff berth is in jeopardy, etc, etc. Same stuff we read a few weeks ago. Only this time Tick Tock’s having none of it.
Red Wings general manager Ken Holland disagreed, insisting the roster is still talented enough to win a ninth-straight Central Division title and 13th in 16 seasons.
“Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk are two of the best players in the world and they’re in the prime of their careers,” Holland said. “Our top four defensemen rank among the best in the league and Chris Osgood has shown what he can do in goal.
“Who’s going to run away with our division? Chicago? We got off to a bad start and the Blackhawks are only two points ahead of us, and there’s still a lot of hockey left to play.”
It’s time to muzzle the old man. Malik beat me to this by like 13 hours. More from him here.

Devellano’s playing the expectation game with everyone.
‘Oh, look at poor us. We’re in trouble. Boo hoo.’
Then, of course, teams get a little complacent playing the Wings rather than circling every Detroit game on their calendar as a chance to really assess how good they are, and the Wings start beating the crap out of people.
I think it’s a solid strategy.
Then Holland comes in afterwards and says all the right things to keep the players from getting to worked up about Jimmy D’s spin-doctoring, and everything is fine.
I mean, seriously, a lot of these guys had to deal with Scotty freaking Bowman’s running commentary on their fitness to be NHL players. I think they can handle Jimmy D’s gamesmanship.

I think we’ve got a, “Bad cop, worse cop” situation going on here. Holland usually prefers to suggest that the Wings have a very difficult task in simply winning their division, and that’s where it ends...but Devellano’s really pushing the, “Making the playoffs is a bonus” sell, maybe because he’s heading down to Florida on the 15th and wants to leave a bit of a mess in his wake, and maybe because…
He wants to sell seats based on the theory that a little adversity can help fill the rink. Lage’s story certainly makes it sound like there’s some drama in store for the intrepid souls who fork out hard-earned dollars to head to the Joe.

“I’m not going to question what Jimmy D thinks about us at this point, but I don’t think it’s going to take a miracle to repeat in the division.”
Reading between the lines, Maltby is telling us sacrifices to Jobu will be madexdo the bounces go our way.
When Jimmy D was a lad, he wore an onion on his belt, which was the style at the time.
Grandpa D is self-medicating and calling press conferences while tripping balls.

Couldn’t agree more. Lots of Wings fans have gotten so used to the success that they really don’t give a crap about the regular season. The wake me when the playoffs start mentality isn’t good for getting people to fork over their hard-earned cash to see a regular season tilt. If there’s drama in the regular season and people have to worry that they might not be able to see the Wings in the playoffs, they’ll be more likely to catch a regular season game.

My first impression is that Jimmy “D” and Holland’s opinions are strikingly similar to those of the “19”.
Continuing my FIRE Brad McCrimmon campaign from previous threads, I have assumed the unofficial score-keeper duties:
Fire McCrimmon chorus, is now unofficially composed of:

There is room for more
Capt D, NHL.com has sortable stats too, but not divisible by Division or Conf.
Add:

He would’ve made a good politician.

Seems like a losing strategy in a town that expects its hockey team to slide into the playoffs, not fight down to the wire. Play the miracle angle too much and you risk turning fans off. Who wants to watch a team struggle to hit their absolute lowest expectations?
I’m not saying they will struggle that way (they won’t--his comments couldn’t be more wrong), but any more doom and gloom from Jimmy “Senile” Devellano and folks on the fringe will just say, “Oh, never mind. I’ll buy that snowblower instead..”

^^ Feel free to join this movement ^^
To reinforce my position:
‘07-’08 (McClellan’s last season), the Wings were very good, statistically, across the board GA (1st), PK (8). Last season, their goal scoring was very good (1), but GAA (20), and PK (25) were not good. This season the GAA (23), and PK (26) are equally unimpressive.
Sure, a portion of the numbers decline can be attributed to talent loss, but if you beleive Holland (and why wouldn’t you) they are still a very solid team. I think so too (for what it is worth).
So I am left to wonder, what else could possibly attirbute to the massive fall-off?
Incidentally, SJS are very good across the board this season.
G/G 3.31 (7), GA/G 2.44 (7), 1.38 5-5 F/A (4), 25.8% PP (5), 83.6% PK
And, they have won 6 straight.

Been calling for McCrimmon’s head since last year. But firing him won’t send a strong enough message that failure is unacceptable. I think the Wings should SET FIRE to Brad and make the team watch that mf’er burn. Message sent, every time the team thinks of mailing it in, they will remember the smell of burning flesh.

I thought at the time of hire, the decision was “OK”, too.
But performance & results after the fact are a fair bases for evaluation.
McCrimmon’s results? Not “dynasty” worthy.
He has established a very poor track record based on teams’ PK (both at Atlanta & Detroit).
If he is responsible for the defense, the PK, the statistics speak for themselves.

Think about this another way, aside from some roster turnover, what is different about the organization post 07-08?
miserable “D” statistics
minus one assistant coach - - now with SJS which has great team “D” stats
plus new assistant coach - - from ATL which had miserable “D” stats
coincidence?

And another thing, Uncle Mike hasn’t been hesitant to throw players under the bus. But, to his credit, he has also accepted some responsibility for the team play, and basically threw himself and his staff under the bus as well.
To the point, I cannot fathom why they don’t take a good long look at their style of play and defensive schemes from 07-08 and try to get back to that style/scheme.
I am not smart enough to discuss the technical aspects, and it could be that they cannot do it due to their “talent” level.
But, JFC, try something, because it is obvious what they are doing now isn’t working out too damn well.

But that’s flawed logic. Maybe the mustachioed one is running the D now and he’s really the incompetent one.
There’s certainly blame to be placed, but I’m just not sure where to place it. I’m not quite ready to lay that blame exclusively at McCrim’s feet till I know for sure he’s the guy in charge of the D/PK. Maybe somebody has seen an article that mentions which coach has which duties?

Agreed. What we’re doing now ain’t working.
If we’re still using the ‘07-’08 scheme, maybe the rest of the league has figured-out the weak spots?
(Personally, I don’t buy that either. It would seem that Todd McLellan gave us something that we don’t have now or aren’t still using. And if we don’t still have it, why not get it? Or, if we do have it, why not use it? I don’t think people - coaches, players - are the issue as much as it is method / technique. It must be done as a PK UNIT. The guys on the ice need to work like a well oiled machine to shut-down the opposotion’s PP. And while the goalie is the best PK tool, the other mates on skates need to support BIG time. Look at the old game films, figure out what worked, apply it to today - with “updates” for ‘09-’10 if needed (?) - and practice, practice, practice the PK until it becomes effective again.)
(Then keep practicing it to keep it effective.)
Posted by stonehands-78 from the beginning ... a WingsFan, on 11/05/09 at 11:47 AM ET
Okay, Nate, after a very quick perudal, here is what I found out, I believe anyway,:
McClellan ran the forwards and the PP. So, you would assume MacLean ran the “D” and the PK.
When the Wings hired McCrimmon, The HighLander speculated:
This is also a nice fit with MacLean being a former high scoring forward and McCrimmon being a defenseman in the day. I’m guessing that MacLean’s duties will be shifted from the blue line to the forwards and perhaps from the penalty-kill to the power play.
I haven’t been able to “nail down” what McCrimmon’s role is yet, but I’m digging.

from the coach’s index at nhl.com
http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=26137
With MacLean responsible for coaching the penalty-kill unit, the Red Wings have been among the league’s best at stopping opponents with a man-advantage. In 2006-07, the Red Wings’ penalty-kill was ranked No. 7 (84.6 percent) allowing 63 power-play goals on 408 short-handed situations. The previous season, the Wings were ranked No. 3 (85.5 percent) when they allowed 67 power-play goals on 461 chances.
It only lists McCrimmon as an assistant and doesn’t say anything about his role on the PK....are we assuming that for some reason they took the responsibility away from maclean and handed it to mccrimmon or did they just write this since Mclellan had already left and he was really the one responsible?
And do we only hire coaches with that start with Mc. i wish uncle mike was McBabcock......MacLean, McBabcock and McCrimmon.....sounds like an Irish law firm.

Herm (a/k/a T-bone)
Whoa I missed something. When was Herm given my Vivid Entertainment alias?
It would seem that Todd McLellan gave us something that we don’t have now or aren’t still using.
MacLean was on PK duty while Todd did PP in 07-08. Then the ‘stache shifted to the Power play when McCrimmon came and he’s been drawing up Magna-doodle PK schemes ever since. OKJeff: it was in that stuff I was digging up yesterday but now can’t find it.
Thats Babs for you (and Keenan) (and Demers),

Fair enough, and thanks for the effort. I thought I remembered Todd running the PP, and that’s why with McCrim being his replacement, him being at fault for the PK didn’t quite make sense to me.
I think it’s likely he’s the one at fault. His time in Atlanta certainly doesn’t give him any bonus points. I’m just trying to avoid this.

“What..? Its not working...Well just keep doing it, but do it harder”
Lends to guys trying to do too much as an individual, playing out of position… not working as a 4 man unit on a PK or 5 man on 5 up play.
Small adjustments should be made on the fly in any level of play in any sport. Hell we do it with our 8 year olds on a baseball field on an out to out and inning to inning basis (shrug).
I understand the whole “steady at the rudder” thing from Uncle Mike but some line changes and strategy tweaks aren’t exactly a change in heading.

Jeebeezus, this search is starting to get rather difficult, but I did unearth this, from the Wings’ site:
Getting an opportunity to work with this Red Wings’ defense, can you please comment on the talent that you have to work with?
“Well, there’s great depth with obviously starts with Nick (Lidstrom). Six Norris trophies, I think that speaks fairly well to what he has brought to the game. I’ve known Nick for a long time and played with him for a few years way back when the earth was flat. He’s been a great player since he got here.”

Nothing wrong with tempering expectations and manufacturing a little perceived adversity. Jimmy D can keep spouting off like this for all I care. I doubt the players take any of his public statements to heart, or even pay that much attention, but it’s pretty clear that he is trying to take some public pressure off them in case things don’t go as they have in years past. Perceived or real, there are a lot of things working against the team this year.
And if McCrimmon really is the problem that everyone seems to think he is, do we really believe that Uncle Mike would keep him on staff?? Come on. I thought we all trusted our favorite Uncle. Let’s step back and remember one extremely important thing: correlation does not mean causation.
