Oh, shut up. I’m just kidding. I know as well as you do that we’ve got plenty to celebrate and discuss before we start providing Tick Tock, architect of a Dynasty, with unsolicited and ignored advice.
I know at least three, if not 19, of you are expecting a tremendous, detail-rich, juvenile yet poignant, recap of Game 6 and the entire playoff. It’s coming, but not until tonite. I’ve got two months of work to catch up on in one afternoon. Sound familiar?
Oh hey. Notice anything different about the banner up above? Thanks Dub.

I’m bleary eyed and trying to be productive at work today. Wore my Yzerman sweater on the bus this morning and exchanged high fives with people on the street and in the coffee shop. How sweet it is!!

The banner makes me realize that the Wings are the first repeat winners of the new millenneum (no arguments here. The Devils won in 2000, which was the final year of the last millenneum.)

Hockeychic, that’s awesome. I got a lot of congratulations from people at work today. I’m hungover, bleary eyed, exhausted but I’ve never felt better!

chief, any take on cherry’s comments last night? i saw in the previous post that if it had been sundin who had won it with toronto, he wouldn’t have made those comments. i agree with that, there would be a lynch mob out to get him, considering the leafs fan base. he’d be done for sure.
anyway, just curious as to what you thought, or if you had run into any articles about it. when i was just little guy in motown, i used to love coaches corner, i thought don cherry was great. but getting older, i started to realize the guy is just a bigot really.

hockeychic: I almost wore my sweater this morning, myself. But it was 80F when I woke up. The high is supposed to be somewhere between 94 and 100 (depending on what news source you ask). I had to determine whether I wanted to give myself a heat stroke at 8am, or give mother nature the opportunity to do it for me closer to 3pm.
High tomorrow is supposed to be “only” 93, with a morning temp of 70. I might wear it then. The Wings fans around here are pretty understanding of the temperature prohibiting the wearing of hockey sweaters.
The temperature, however, didn’t stop me from wearing my Wings cap. Lots of celebrations today, including a “Let’s Go Red Wings” chant on the train into town. Awesome time to be a Wings fan. I just wish I could do this in Detroit.

Yeah, I sooo wish I could be at home for the parade. I remember in 97 I was working downtown, so I just walked down to the parade by myself and had an awesome time.

I’m originally from the downriver area. The only thing that keeps me sane in Atlanta is the fact we have hockey here.
I’m planning on moving back. You know what they say—home is where the heart is. Well, I am pretty sure my heart is still in Detroit.

Will someone PLEASE record the parade for those of us not in the metro area???

Thanks to all here that made this run enjoyable. You all are very passionate Red Wing fans, and that makes you a friend of mine. Wore my Yzerman Jersey to work this morning in Boulder, CO. Went a few rounds with the Denver media too. Boy, they are a bitter lot. What a beautiful rainy day in Colorado! Have a great summer everyone.
Now if you will excuse me, I need to get back to work, and also order some Championship gear!

He pretty much says that just because Lidstrom did it, he’s still the first in 30 yrs, “so what does that tell you?” (his quote)

Jeff I think last time and the Pistons parade you could stream it online somehow, I don’t remember. I could be fantasizing. I’m kinda in the same boat. One of the newspaper or TV web sites will have video, live or archived. Would love to see it live too. Friday? Hmm, maybe I can fly up for it.

Still waiting to see if anyone else caught that Ozzie quote from Local 4 last night where he flat-out bashed the officiating and implied that the league wanted Pittsburgh to win. Hahaha, he was so wasted.

Alan,
What part of ATL do you live in? I’m in Auburn, AL, so only about 90 mins away. I, unfortunately, watched the game all by my lonesome last night (but for the 19), as there are no Red Wings fans anywhere in this town. If it’s not college football, nobody here has any idea what you’re talking about (except, strangely, for the numerous Yankees and Red Sox fans in this town).
I hear you on the heat… the projected high here is 96 (Homer!) degrees today. I decided to go with the Wings t-shirt I bought at the NHL Store in NYC back in March instead of the Konstantinov jersey.
My first Cup away from home (originally from Grand Rapids and did undergrad at Kalamazoo College). It’s not the same. Not any better or worse, just different. I plan on celebrating when I’m up in GR next weekend.

Margot: Yeah, believe it or not. The train car was packed, but there were about five of us Wings fans on board. We started the chant, and everyone else just sorta went with it. I only have to wonder what the people outside though of us as we got to Lindbergh Station!
As for the climate differences… I honestly prefer the Detroit climate. The summers here are brutal, and since I’ve started getting heat strokes, I decided it’s time for me to go home as quick as possible, lest this city kills me.
I can add an extra blanket or two in the winter, there. And hockey sweaters are a must-have winter apparel item. Here? Last winter, short sleeves and sometimes shorts are the apparel items I used.
Cold weather is a little taste of home. I want more of that. To each their own, though

Amen! My heart is still in Detroit too. But the winters kill me.
My heart’s still in southeastern Michigan, winters and all. Until I move to someplace like Russia where it actually snows a decent amount, I’m gonna keep missing everything about it, even the winters and the salt and the bulletproof snow. Just maybe not the muskeedas. I can do without those lil’ bloodsuckers.
3 Margueritas and tell her you love her.
Hasn’t worked on Hockeychic, has it Bill? I’m still, well…intrigued is one word for it, slightly puzzled another, at your entreaties to her to sit on your face. Yet I reckon you might win her over yet with the new plates.
Oh, and one of my coworkers, a Polish Dive fan, came in this afternoon. I greeted him warmly…and he told me to be quiet about the game because he had it taped and hadn’t watched it yet. I told him he could probably guess the result by my mood. Heh. Serves him right for liking a team just because of Wojtek Wolski.
Wonder if Cherry classifies him as a soft Euro?

Incognetis: I live in Jonesboro, which is about 15 miles south of the airport. I too watched the game last night all by my lonesome, but that was mostly by choice. Whenever I watched the Wings with other people, they lost. I washed my Wings cap after they lost those two games to the Preds, and they come out and won 9 in a row. Good mojo or what?
If you want to see hockey in Alabama, I do remember reading about a NCAA team in Huntsville, AL. If nothing else, maybe us A2Y’ers in Atlanta can meet up for a Thrashers game one night. Sure, it’s not Detroit. But it’s NHL, and it’s nearby. Better than watching on TV, for sure.
Posted by Alan from Atlanta on 06/05/08 at 12:34 PM ET
Just think, hopefully you’ll be needing another line on that banner soon! Good times.
Maybe now I can start actually getting some work done at the office; playoff season uses up ever-increasing amounts of mental bandwidth as the postseason continues.

Stinkin’ hot here in Chattanooga, too. I think cave-dwelling may be in order for the summer.

There’s the Huntsville Havoc of the SPHL. It’s not good hockey, but it’s hockey. There’s only six teams in that league now (Knoxville, Huntsville, Fayetteville, Columbus [GA], and Pee Dee), but it’s good to go to the arenas and smell the ice.
I, too, am longing to return to Michigan. It’s just not the same riding out celebrating with no one understanding why.
Posted by Chantel from Jacksonville, Florida on 06/05/08 at 12:50 PM ET
Yeah, my girlfriend is from Huntsville, and UAH does have a NCAA D-I team. There’s also the Southern Professional Hockey League, which has teams in Huntsville and Columbus. Since Columbus is about 40 minutes from Auburn, I’ve driven to a few games there. It’s total bush league hockey, and the crowds are something else. It’s an odd blend of rednecks, Northern transplants, and military personnel from Ft. Benning. I haven’t been to a Thrashers game yet, but we’ll have to see if the Wings come down to ATL next year. Every team is supposed to play every other at least once next season, right?

After 30some odd MI winters I needed a break. The break has been 5 years now, but never say never. I spent my favorite years in the Detroit area and its never left me.
I like Atlanta, and you’re right, summers are brutal. (I’m dreading getting into the inferno of my car this afternoon.)
I get to MI a lot because my family is still there. However, whenever I get homesick I think about the Christmas visits and the endless snow and grey skies and know I’m not ready to move back.
RWBill: I laughed at your margarita joke the first time you posted!

No big deal, just curious if anyone else caught that. I’m actually a bit surprised, given the way the media is always looking for that type of “controversy”, that that quote hasn’t been run with.
Posted by Nathan from the scoresheet! on 06/05/08 at 01:00 PM ET
All my family is still in MI too. From Grosse Ile to Grand Rapids, they’re all there and in between. I don’t get to MI nearly as much as I want to because of money issues, sadly.
Believe it or not, but gray skies and snow cover makes me smile. Really, it’s relaxing to me. Atlanta doesn’t see that much, and that’s a big downer for me here.
Posted by Alan from Atlanta on 06/05/08 at 01:02 PM ET
I haven’t been to a Thrashers game yet, but we’ll have to see if the Wings come down to ATL next year.
The crowds are pretty good at Thrashers games. I was taken aback seeing women wearing high heels and mini-skirts to games when I first went to one, though!
I work in radio here and the Thrashers organization is incredibly generous and helpful. My last interview was with Marian Hossa (before he left.)
There’s a rabid hockey fan contingent here. Some of it has to do with the transplant nature of the city and some are fans from the time of the Atlanta Flames and Atlanta Knights.
Posted by Margot from Atlanta on 06/05/08 at 01:06 PM ET
Funny you should mention the K"NIGHT"s, Margot. A lot of people find what a lot of fans here do during the national anthems stupid, but it makes me laugh a little. It sort of gives the Thrashers fanbase an identity—even if they’re celebrating a former minor league affiliate for a franchise that happens to be a current division rival (Tampa Bay).
And your right - Thrashers fans here are die-hard fans. I think some of these people would kill to prevent the team from moving, if it ever comes down to that.

BTW, the last Columbus Cottonmouths game I went to, the guest of honor was none other than Richard Petty! He dropped the ceremonial puck and the Cottonmouths wore special checkered-flag jerseys. Apologies to any NASCAR fans in here, but Jesus did those rednecks go crazy.
They also chanted, “we want a fight!” every five minutes. All my girlfriend and I could do was just laugh.
Good times.
