Khan(!)‘s State Of The Game

DD Captain Ansar Khan(!) has posted his written testimony regarding the state of the league, and finds it wanting.  He’s got the usual suggestions: bigger nets, more physical play and, yes, a heaping plate of humble pie in the form of a return to ESPN.

Both sides have the option of terminating the deal after this season, and many believe the NHL should go back to ESPN, feeling whatever the league loses in revenue it will recoup in exposure and credibility.

Designated Wing loose cannon Jimmy Devellano disagrees, which is completely insane.

“I’d rather be on a network that cares about our league,’’ he said. “On ESPN, you didn’t know if games were on ESPN or ESPN2, at 7:30 or 10:30 or on what day of the week.’’

To put it mildly, that may be one of the stupidest statements I’ve ever read.  You don’t know when the games are on, Jimmy?  Well, the games played in the eastern time zone start at 7 or 7:30, the western at 10 or 10:30. Don’t know what day of the week, check the schedule.  OLN/VS is a disaster.  A frigging disaster and a joke.  It’s a USFL-sized example of how far the league has fallen. It’s time to suck it up, take our medicine and get back to The Network.

ESPN vs. VS is no vs. at all - it’s no contest.  I live in a major hockey market (metro Detroit), have 70+ cable channels and don’t eve have VS.  Yes, I sure enjoyed that recent Avs game on VS, just like I’ll be enjoying the All Star festivities on VS.  Thank God for CBC…
The NHL simply cannot run away from VS fast enough - The NHL slipped into complete irrelevance on the sports conscious.  They are right there with Spike’s Whacked Out Sports (with any luck, you’re thinking, “what the heck is that?  My point).

I agree wholeheartedly with going back to ESPN.  On Versus (if you are lucky enough to have it) you get games once a week and maybe twice if they are feeling generous whereas with ESPN, you had games several nights a week in addition to “NHL2Night” and they gave the league more exposure on SportsCenter.

Bigger nets will not bring people to games.  The physical element needs to be allowed back into the sport, not necissarily fighting (just MO) but where are the bodychecks?

Versus has gotten a lot bettersince last year but it is still not good enough and not in enough homes.

ESPN vs Versus.  The way I look at it is, I’d rather be Jessica Alba’s second string boyfriend and get her attention some of the time, then be Whoopi Goldberg’s exclusive boyfriend, and have her to myself all of the time

I’m starting to believe that the biggest reason the Wings are a PR-hating, Aurie-bashing dinosaur of Deep-Digger-Censorship has a lot less to do with Mike Ilitch or John Hahn than the T-Rex that is Jimmy Devellano.

George, I reached that conclusion a long time ago.  Jimmy D. is an old school guy:  “Protect the players privacy.  Protect the team’s privacy.  Strict conrol of the media.  If one of the media get too close?  Ban him.”  You should ask one of the old-time Wings writers what the reason is.  They will know.  Bloggers?  I bet Devellano doesn’t own or use a pc.
