Killed

Perhaps one of the greatest penalty kills in Detroit Red Wing history?  Hard to argue.  Unless you’re Sidney Crosby, of course.  From his presser, when asked about Zetterberg on the 5-3.

“He got his stick in the lane once.  But I don’t think he did anything out of the ordinary.”

15 down.

That was the most amazing 5 on 3 kill i have seen in a long time.  I was having heart failure the entire time.  That was incredible.  I think Zetterberg should have been the first star.  He was nothing short of superhuman.

LOL Golden Boy said Z “did nothing out of the ordinary” on that 5-3.  Looked like he was about to cry as he said.  Just couldn’t bring himself to admit Uncle Z took him and his team to school.

But that’s OK.  Golden Boy knows what he’s talking about.  The phenomenal PK’er he is.

Get out, kid.  This is an adult league.

Just saw that comment from Crosby too. To be fair though, he was asked to talk about the guy who outplayed him during the key moment in the game.

Makes you wonder what he said afterwards too…

Bucci looks crushed.

Possible also that Crosby knows how tough it will be to win, and is trying to minimize Detroit so the task seems more manageable?

Since the team doesn’t have a veteran captain, he has to feel his way on his own, and this is the first time he’s been expected to lead in such a high-pressure situation.

I’m more ticked at Therrien’s comments.  He’s a grown man and should know better than to whine.

That PK was one of the best moments of the entire season, IMHO.

It was also the defining moment of the playoffs.  Where we showed our hunger and desire for Lord Stanley’s Cup.  Gary’s Baby Boy was given his 5-3 Christmas present by the refs; ironic how Crosby can draw the penalty, yet Filpulla gets mauled twice as bad three minutes later off the Samuelsson dump with no call.

If this was other seasons I would be worried.  But not tonight.  I have never seen the team as a whole so hungry and tenacious for playoff success.  The 5-3 kill was destiny.  This is our year, and our cup.

The Sawchuck jersey is inspirational.  Can Osgood get his 10th playoff shutout next game?  I’m going to lose my voice cheering for it.

Funny, something else looks like the number 1:

The yapping from Crosby was laughable, but I have two things to say about it:

1) Pierre Mcguire grabbed Z after the game ended and asked him what Crosby said, and to paraphrase Z, his response was, “I don’t know, I couldn’t really hear him, but he’s just frustrated with the outcome of the game.”  Very classy answer from Z, who was served up the opportunity to rip on the Little Gary’s Baby Boy.

2) Crosby is the captain of the Pens.  He was trying to get the emotions going a little bit after a tough loss so he could rally his team for a strong effort in Game 5.  Can’t really blame him for tossing some words at one of our guys.  I mean, after all, he is getting is ass handed to him on national TV.

Crosby to Zetterberg after the final horn:  I’M YOUR BITCH!  I’M YOUR BITCH!

Good God.  My mom asked me, while I was in the fetal position on the floor, if anything was wrong during that five-on-three.  I screamed, “MOM!  IT’S 5-ON-3!!”  She’s a good mom, and immediately put a death grip on my dad’s leg.  Dad howled just as Z let loose the backhand shot that didn’t do anything, but meant everything.  And that’s how I knew it was OK to breathe again.

I’m due back in Chicago on Monday…

I’ve just come back from Pensblog after wading through the ‘Trail of Tears’.  The old bugaboo ‘obstruction’ was their #1 complaint… again.  Seems to me the Pens had more PP’s didn’t they?  Seems to me they were obstructing as much as if not more than the Wings.  Wah, wah wah.

Kudos to a display that I have not seen at the Mellon for quite some time…Having now witnessed Game 2 at the Joe and now Game 4…It’s clear that Detroit, maybe not with the better talent, easily plays a better overall game.

For every 1 Penguin on the puck, there are 2 Wings.
When there are 2 Pens trying to play along the boards, there are 3 Wings…

As I just heard Babcock say in a replay of his presser: Taking away their time and space. He was talking about the Pens on the PP…but I think the whole series, this has been the case.

While obviously the mountain to climb for my side is greater than probably humanly possible….I won’t concede defeat until zeros are on the clock after a 3rd period with Detroit having a lead.

Again, a great display by your Wings tonight, and throughout the series so far…I just hope my Pens have a little left in the tank to make Game 5 interesting.

Mike, it seems to me that many Pens fans are - to a degree - have an external locus of control.  I suspect that they’ve bought into the media hype about the infallibility of Sidney’s Penguins, and are now they’re looking for all of the excuses for why the Pittsburgh team is being dominated.

Man up, Pens fans. You’re being beaten by a better team.  Osgood is a machine right now. Zetterberg is playing better on both ends of the ice than Crosby is.  Is it possible that Crosby has more natural talent? Sure, but unless he goes out there and actually proves it, you’re just repeating the hype.

Missed the Liveblog since family was around, but wouldn’t miss the game for all the tea in China.

And what a game!

Pens played nearly as hard as they did in game 3(Hossa showed while Malkin sucked; call it a draw), but Detroit wasn’t nearly as sloppy.

A few observations:
- Rafi was mostly terrible tonite defensively. I dunno what happened, but it wasn’t cool.
- Ice was a bit off again. What’s up with that?
- Lilja wasn’t nearly as big of a disaster, tho I wouldn’t exactly call his game good. I’ll go with passable.
- Ozy played strong. Nothing outstanding, but he was where he needed to be pretty much at all times.
- Lids with a goal!
- WHOODLER!
- Holy Hell, Zetterberg had a game for the ages. No points you say? Only 2 Shots? 40% in the face-off circle? Don’t care. His game was spectacular. The PK alone was awe inspiring.
- Wings did a good job gaining the zone against a stacked blue line(as in defensive posture, not skill), especially on the PP. They used the same drop pass play pretty much every single time, and Pit never even attempted to adjust.
- Was extremely happy to see the Wings not go into shut-down mode in the 3rd period after Hudler’s goal. They kept at it with the same aggressive forcheck as normal, only shortening shifts and forcing the puck deep.

Please give me Cheli for game 5. Perhaps he wasn’t in tonite because Babs just wanted to control when he was on the ice? Well game 5 provides that opportunity, and you promised us we’d see him in the finals. Make it happen.

On a completely random note, tonite my uncle mentioned reading somewhere that before game 5 of the Flyers series, the Loo had a couple of extra temp. AC units installed because Crosby was complaining it was to hot. Anyone else hear about that? And if they remained for this series?

Win it on home ice boys. Make us all proud and happy and drunk and hoarse and teary and youthful and exuberant and however else you feel like celebrating. Monday nite is yours.

I can’t believe we are only one win away.  WOW.  Bring it home, boys.

Pens can cry obstruction all they want but I think they were obstructing as much as we were.  I thought NBC was pretty good about pointing that out.

Am still just in awe of Zetterberg.  Loved that shot of Zet, Lidstrom, and Kronwall talking during the TO on the 5 on 3.  When the Pens didn’t score on that, I thought they ran out of gas.  What is up with Malkin?  This does not look like a MVP trophy winner to me.  Crosby annoys me to no end but at least he showed up for this series.

the cbc coverage i saw had the stars as:
1 zetterberg
2 osgood
3 hossa

was a great game, but the officiating sucked (as usual) if you are gonna call something (interference) on detroit, then, like an above poster said call it on the pittsburgh d as well for the maul on filppula 3-4 min later.

If the wings win game 5 and the cup on home ice, instead of shaking hands with Malkin they should all give him a high 5 instead, it would make me happy anyways smile

It ain’t over ‘till it’s over, but this game felt so good.

Lets wrap it up at the Joe and celebrate on Monday.

Before tonight I thought Z’s low offensive production could make Ozzie the top choice for Conn Smythe in the medias eyes but he was simply superb.

Lidstrom raising the cup… Zetterberg with the Conn Smyth. Oh I cant wait for Monday, (hopefully my throat will stop hurting from yelling be then too!)

Lets Go Wings!

Obstruction on both sides tonight was pretty gross - tonight was a “throw back” game to the late 90’s.  Both teams were doing their damnedest to not make a crushing mistake and, again, Pittsburgh struggled with getting the puck away from Detroit players once they got a hold of it.

That said, the amounts of whining and complaining from Pittsburgh players and Therrien all throughout the game is awful.  I can’t be surprised though especially given the example Therrien has set for them.  Instead of dealing with adversity, they whine about it.

Incredible.

After reading nearly three full days of Penguins fan describe Orpik’s “The Shift” or “The Yard Sale” and how huge that was, I was hoping for something equally large to discuss… I think we can all agree that “The Kill” best sums up why the Wings have had success in these playoffs.  While we have had standouts this season, no one player has put himself above the system.

Barring something amazing in game 5 (or, God forbid, 6 or 7), Zetterberg is definitely the Conn Smythe front-runner.  He has shown the difference between being quiet, yet effective and being outright invisible (Jordan Staal, anyone?)

Hmmmm ... Time travel?  Hallucinigenic drugs?

Ooh!  Ooh!  Is it “experience?”

Except this Penguins team will look completely different in three or four years.  Hossa is gone, they have a ton of other UFA to deal with - the big plus is that after a really rocky and irregular start to his career, Fleury has shown that he is a solid goaltender so they can cross that off their list.

Malkin - I’ve seen a lot of speculation that he was hurt early in the Philly series on a hit.  If so, and he’s so injured that he is largely ineffective, I don’t think he should even be on the ice.  It’s one thing to have a player hurt but still effective if he adjusts because he can’t skate as well, or the coach uses him in more limited situations, but he hasn’t been good at all.

Seems that Pittsburgh only has one or two players show up each game.  Game four it was Hossa, game three it was Crosby - I find myself wondering at tiems if the team has anything beyond the first one or two lines, because I don’t hear many other names.

If the Red Wings win the series, unless Osgood is spectacular, I can’t see the Conn-Smythe going to anyone other than Zetterberg.  He has been solid throughout the playoffs, and has had several moments like that pk that really stick in the mind and should influence voters.  Or maybe if Franzen gets another hat trick - but even so I think Zetterberg being in every game clinches it.

And someone tell PaulinMiamiBeach that I think after the experience of watching that game, his brand new Datsyuk jersey is indoctrinated into the playoffs.  smile

Had to mention how cool it was to see Lidstrom so calm post-game.  “Sure, you’re excited to be in a good position, but you have to win four games, not three, and everyone in the room knows that, too.”

This has got to be huge for him to have the opportunity to captain this team to a win, but you wouldn’t know it to look at him.

I touched that up for you a little bit.

The Caps I had no feeling for one way or the other.  The Hurricanes were just a nuisance—like a mosquito buzzing your ear when you’re trying to sleep.  I didn’t like the Flyers at all, but I respected them.  I really hate these f-ing Penguins, though.  I’m sure most of that comes from the media slathering Crosby’s nards every five seconds, but the incessant whining like the damn thing should just be handed to them really chaps my ass.

I hope they all come down with a bad case of dysentery.

Hola “19”.  Had to watch the game at the INLAWS, due to my stupid NBC station NOT AIRING THE GAME.  Terrific hosts they were.

What an amazing, heart-stopping game!

Here is the stat of the night:

One shot, that’s all Pittsburgh had to show for not only a two-man advantage, but during the 2:34 of consecutive power-play time that included 70 seconds of a 5-on-4.

Stanley is in the house Monday night, time for Nick to hoist it!!!

There’s a better name than the kill. One that takes in the hopelessness of the Pens PP and the greatness of the Wings PK. It captures the brutal efficiency in which Zetterberg demolished any chance at a Pens comeback.

I propose that the 5-3 moment be remembered as:
