Last Vestige Of Shanny Gone For Good

I’m sure there are a few misguided souls out there who actually believed that (a) Brendan Shanahan would actually, eventually, return to the Wings or (2) Detroit would retire his jersey in homage to his 8 full seasons in Hockeytown.

No on both counts.

First, Mike Babcock knew what he was doing when he convinced Kenny Holland to let Shanahan walk; which he did while keeping his pride intact.  Shanahan’s unwillingness to mix it up around the crease and lack of overall speed led to his departure more than the Wings going “in a different direction.”  And, as Detroithockey.net points out, a year later #14’s been given away as well.

Derek Meech, who has spent limited time with the Red Wings wearing #36 but is expected not to be sent to Grand Rapids as he would have to clear waivers, has taken on the #14 formerly worn by Brendan Shanahan.

I’m a bit surprised by the Red Wings giving out Shanahan’s number only a season after his depature to New York. It had to happen sometime, I don’t think there’s a whole lot of a push to have the #14 retired for Shanny, but it seems like the team would have waited longer.

Detroit Hockey, a great resource I don’t point you to enough, also brings to light a few more number assignments you may not have been aware of:

Dallas Drake will wear #17 and Brian Rafalski his customary #28.  Also, Igor Grigorenko’s been given #21.

Kopecky will be wearing #82 since he lost his #28 to Rafalski.

I still think that it was Shanny, not Babs, who instigated the break-up.  I don’t understand why Holland would have allowed Shanahan to take a week to make up his mind otherwise.

I’m honestly the most surprised by the fact that Ryan Oulahen’s wearing #25.  That one was out of circulation for a while, too, and let’s just say that Oulahen and his uranium hands aren’t exactly on the fast track to the NHL.
