Little Gary’s Wet Dream:  No Wings In ASG

The happy clowns are racing to Gary’s HQ.  The fire trucks are warmed up, helium tanks are on ready-standby and re-runs of Blossom are showing on every monitor in the NHL’s front office. All the special things that make Little Gary Bettman’s life a happy one are converging on this wonderful day.

Capped off by this news:  there will be zero representation from the Detroit Red Wings in Montreal.

Datsyuk? Hurt last night. Hip flexor.  Lidstrom?  Well, now we’re talking a few new frames for our Deep Diggers’ highlight reel.

Apparently, he’s out.  Apparently, Stephane Robidas is in and has known he’s in for some time.

The NHL hasn’t officially announced it yet, but Stephane Robidas said he was told by GM Les Jackson that he had been invited as a fill-in.

Not sure who might be hurt or what, but it appears Robidas will be in Montreal Jan. 25 for the 2009 NHL All-Star Game.

That was 4 days ago.

And this today.

KK

Marleau and Dallas Stars defenseman Stephane Robidas have been named to the Western Conference team to replace injured Detroit Red Wings Pavel Datsyuk and Nicklas Lidstrom, respectively, in the 57th NHL All-Star Game in Montreal’s Bell Centre on Sunday.

No mention from the Diggers. I’m sure they’re tracking it. Tracking it hard.  We’ll give them a few hours.  The likelihood?  Lidstrom’s getting a break.  A ficticious injury, or a minor one, something not significant enough to keep him from absolutely dominating last night..which he did.  The only Wing who didn’t suck and suck hard last night, by the way.

Bottom line:  No representation from your Stanley Cup Champsions.  Another possibility?  Hossa was probably asked to replace Datsyuk.  Rafalski, like last year, was probably asked to replace Lidstrom—-whenever that may have been, eh Ansar?  Both probably declined.  And that’s a good thing for two reasons.

It exposes Little Gary’s county fair for the joke that it is.  And it gives the Wings some much-needed time off to consider how to stop playing like garbage.  It gives every one of them a few days to consider just how pathetic you have to be to give up six goals in consecutive nights.  In front of your dads, no less.

Ahhh, well.  Congrats to the little tyke.  Affirmation for Gary that the NHL simply doesn’t need the Detroit Red Wings.  Doesn’t need them in the Eastern Conference where they belong. Doesn’t need them in the All Star Game. Certainly the league doesn’t need the Wings as a top billing in the Winter Classic.  Hell, we don’t even need the Wings in the Finals anymore.  Were they even there last year?  The guy in the Jackatoreum doesn’t seem to think so.

Oh.  Here it comes.  Here come the catcalls, the “Wing fans are whining again”.  Yeah?  F’ing A right we are.  Don’t like it?  The Wings have carried this league for a decade.  And still…the shaft is all theirs.

Revenue sharing? Thank the Wings.  TV contract?  Thank the Wings.  Merchandise?  Sellouts, if any? Price gouging in places like Phoenix?  Thank the Wings, bitches.

Whatever.  Just like last year, it’ll make winning it again this June that much sweeter.

Do we care that there are no Wings going to Montreal? Nope.  That gives me about six hours back I’d waste in front of the tv.  It’s the principle though Gary.  Look it up.

Detroit used to be “the motor city” until their cars became the worst in the world. Now they call it “hockey town” but can’t sell out a playoff game. What a bunch of whiny fans-the players chose not to go because they are either hurt/too old.Quit your whining-this may be the future “Las Vegas Gamblers”

You know I shouldn’t respond to this, just like I shouldn’t respond to my 3 year old cousin who calls me stinky just to piss me off, but whatever.

I am not a fan of the All Star gimmick. Once again the Rodney Dangerfields of hockey. We get no respect.
All that aside, I am glad for the break. These guys need to get back to the fundamentals that for so long have sustained this Great Team. Last night was not pretty but I swear that it was the first time the Wings have lost in Phoenix during the regular season.  Ever. I know, cold comfort.

I used to live there and I went to every game with my boys. I could be wrong but I don’t think I am. So according to the law of averages the Coyotes were long overdue.Bitches.

I’m not a Wings fan, that’s true. Some of the points you’ve made are completely valid, IwoCPO.

- The wings relative absence in the nhl marketing strategy is stupid, that’s for sure.
- I’m not convinced Lidstrom has already lost the Norris.
- About the owners, who are the other owners that opposed the salary cap? And did their franchise got penalized by Bettman because of it? (this is a sincere question)
- About the choice of Wrigley over the Michigan stadium, I really don’t think Detroit got shafted here. The choice was obiously not about attendance, it was about getting an iconic venue, and showcasing a resurgent Chicago franchise. Again, it is discutable, but I think the nhl got it right on that one: the choices of the venue and the two teams were pretty good in my opinion.

But overall, I don’t think Detroit really is the nhl’s ugly duckling. Bettman is a moron, I couldn’t agree more, and I’m certainly not trying to defend his dubious record here. But I don’t think he is stupid enough to ignore that the Wings are one of the nhl’s best assets, and to deliberately try to disadvantage them all the time. Maybe I’m naive, but I think there is a bit of paranoia here.

You’re not naive.  We’re completely paranoid.  It’s how we roll here Greg.  Paranoia, alcohol, 3rd grade wit…all staples.

I’m not convinced Lidstrom has already lost the Norris.

Not so much an indictment of Bettman, but of the MSM…but they were waiting for an opportunity to give it to someone else.  Lidstrom gave it to them with his slow start.  Too many Don Cherrys among them to let Lidstrom win it again.  I’m sure they feel it needs to go to a good Western Canadian boy, not The Swede again.

The choice was obiously not about attendance, it was about getting an iconic venue, and showcasing a resurgent Chicago franchise. Again, it is discutable, but I think the nhl got it right on that one: the choices of the venue and the two teams were pretty good in my opinion.

Debatable, and good points.  But the Wings are owed that game.  Bottom line.  The league owes this team for keeping them in the West and for the millions (at least) the Wings have brought in for every team in the league.

About the owners, who are the other owners that opposed the salary cap? And did their franchise got penalized by Bettman because of it? (this is a sincere question)

Not sure on that one, but I’d be surprised if any of the top five teams who made the most money the years prior to the lockout—-due to success, marketing, local tv contracts, etc—-were supportive of the Cap.

Yeah, I’m sure Gary is happy that they’ll lose viewers because of the fact that no Wings are in the game.  I’m sure that’s just what he wanted.  Less ratings.

I think someone’s a little upset that the players they love don’t give a shit about them.  I mean, is it really that big of a deal to go hang out with some of the best players in the world and get a bunch of free shit?  Of course Hoss and Rafalski got asked, but they don’t give a shit about giving their fans a reason to watch the game.  Don’t blame Gary.  It’s your own selfish players.

Your hero, Lil Gary, dumps the leagues television rights to the V and you think he gives a damn about ratings?

As for the Wings not playing, I think you’ll find it’s a pretty wide majority here that would rather see them sit out, rest and get ready for the next 2 1/2 months as opposed to playing in an exhibition game at the end of a 2 week road trip.  You think they care about going to play in Montreal when they haven’t been home with their families in the last 2 weeks?  I don’t blame them one iota for bagging the whole shootin’ match.  Now, instead of having to go to Montreal for 3 days, they can take their families south to a beach somewhere and relax while, as Incognetis put it, Lil’ Gary giggles, claps and spits up on himself.  Enjoy the game, Wah.  I’m sure it’ll be a grand ole time.

-fire up the still,
-pour out those half empty glasses and render them half full,
-help Ozzie search for his mojo,
-stock up on pets,
-polish your V (no you won’t go blind, but, we will know)

Are you kidding me?  That’s a full week!  Now if you’ll excuse me, my V needs some grooming.  Where are my clippers?

After all, in Detroit we are intensely focused on the winning the Stanley Cup every year, and we mean it.  And we are unhappy with anything less.  Most fanbases will have premature ejaculations all over themselves every time their team makes the second round.  Unless you are a Quebecois fan of Montreal, in which case you will riot and THEN have a premature ejaculation all over yourself.

My goodness, why such retorts to Chief’s (predictable) lashing of Lil’ Gary’s screwing of the Wings in general and in the ASG.

Steroetypes are almost always subject to exception, but I find the following statements are generally true of the Chief and his"19” cohorts (in no particular order):

(1)  Steve Yzerman was the greatest Captain of all time, in any sport;  he is a legend, and can walk on water; the fact that he spent his entire career in DET and lifted DET from Deadthings to the greatest dynasty ever, and single “leggedly” resurrected HockeyTown only magnifies his greatness;

(2)  The Red Wings are the greatest hockey team of all time (subject to appropriate rebuttal by fans of Les Habitants only); certainly the greatest non-Canadian dynasty ever;

(3)  For reasons which can only be attributted to some irrational need to either self-mutilate, or out of pure despotism; Lil Gary takes every opportunity to bend the Organization over and proceed to give them colon exams sans lubricant;  putting them in the Western Conference is just the pinnacle example;

(4)  The vast majority of hockey msm despise the Wings organization and their apparent lack of need to fill their roster with “good canadian boys”;  especially true during playoff coverage when the MSM will suffer repeated premature ejaculations salivating over Crosby et al.;

(5)  Sydney Crosby is the anti-christ; and all of the MSM have fondled themselves delirous in the jacketoreum watching that damned CenterIce promo;

(6)  Detroit MSM, excluding the HighLander and George, could not find their way out of a paperbag with a Garvin;  the thought of them actually writing an independant story on any given day is a sure sign that world will soon end;

(7)  The “19” have an inherent affection for the Chief and for the rank adolescent humor he spouts, and which the “19” willingly aide and abet in themselves;

(8)  If you haven’t gotten a clue during the first 30 seconds of your visit to this particular site, your more hopeless than William Tell staring down a wide-open cage (although he is (shoot me now) getting a little better lately);

Thats my take on the matter,

and as the Squid(s) would say -  carry on, carry on!

Some other things I wanted to add - wasn’t Babcock talking about how rare practices are for the Wings this year? There was a break early in the season and it was the Wings first real chance to get some practice in. If I remember correctly, they followed that up with a pretty good 2-1 win over the Dicks. So hopefully they just need some practice to sharpen up.

Also, I think the Wings being in the West thing doesn’t matter since the BJs are farther east. And I like being in the West, we’ve gotten used to it.

Lastly…I REALLY…REALLY…want the Wings to win the Cup now.

I am thrilled - THRILLED - that all of the Wings will have a vacation instead of going to Montreal and schmoozing.  I feel bad for Datsyuk because I think he would have enjoyed his time in Montreal, but he needs to recover more.  There will be other opportunities.

As soon as I heard the news I told one of my hockey-loving coworkers that they were both out - he knew I’d been hoping they would both take the time to rest up and see their families before the second half of the season - but he asked me what reasons were given.

I said that both were out injured, but I think Pavel was out because he was sore and Lidstrom was out “injured” - which is 100% fine by me.

**********

About the games this last trip - I wonder if it isn’t just all the travel catching up to them.  There are distinct benefits to getting so many of their long, multi-time-zone trips out of the way early, but I wonder if the miles finally accumulated to the point that they just had very little energy left.  They have looked more sluggish than not trying to me - if that is the case, then they should have an easier time playing the way they normally do after the semester break.

What is this paper bag of what you speak, Jeff?  I got lost in one of them once…Took me three days to get out…

Look, I don’t have a problem with Parick Marleau or Stephane Robidas, but I do have a problem with the concept that the NHL chose to add players (regardless of their names or the teams that they played for) ahead of Red Wings alternatives.

The league chose to represent all 15 teams at the expense of players like Marleau in its selection of All-Star reserves, but the Hockey Operations department has no problem replacing Red Wings with other players when you’ve got members of the team who will clearly play in Montreal only because the NHL didn’t want fans of those particular teams left out?

That kind of logic makes no sense to me.  As Chris Chelios suggested a few weeks ago, we’re talking about the defending Cup champs, and the league’s characteristic willingness to shortchange Detroit for the sake of promoting other markets has become all too predictable, if not expected, on many fronts.  I don’t see the Wings as some sort of sacred cow, but I do believe that the NHL’s most successful team over the last 15 years deserves a nod as one of the most popular and influential teams in the league.

If anything, this shortchanges the Red Wings’ fans, who were given another excuse to not watch the game, and this takes Detroit out of the ratings market.  If the NHL wants to shoot itself in both feet, so be it, I suppose.

Since moving to Phoenix, the Coyotes are 5-15-5-1(W-L-T-OL) at home against Detroit, while being outscored 90-63. Strangely, their record in Detroit is much better, only one game below .500 (9-10-4-0), and their scoring deficit is just six goals.

But it has been awhile since Detroit lost in Phoenix. In fact the last time it happened, Dan Cleary scored a shorty—for the Coyotes:

Sorry, Kate!

George, unless I missed something, we don’t know for a fact that no Wings were offered replacement spots. I don’t want to give the League too much credit, but if its so stupid and badly run that no Wings were offered spots, then we should all switch over to professional bowling as our sport of choice.

Is the League badly run and does it make bad decisions? Countless examples say “yes.” Is it dumb enough to cut players from one of the most important teams it has out of the Game by neglecting to offer a spot? I don’t think so. What could they possibly have to gain by that? I’m personally glad the League doesn’t have the power to force players to play in the Game. Would we rather have that, just so we can have some Wings in it? If Hossa, Zetterberg, Rafalski, etc. turned down an invite, good. They’ve got more important games to play.

Of course, we won’t know for sure until someone reports on it. It’d be nice if the team could clear it up.

Oh my goodness!  It’s like I’ve found my lost family!!!  I’ve never been so happy in my life.  I have had all these crazy ideas in my head which I have formulated over the last couple of years about how the league and Bettman totally screws the Red Wings every chance they get and revels in the thought of seeing them fail, and now I’ve stumbled across a site with people who have reached the same conclusions that I have…  I’ve laughed harder at some of the comments posted here than I have in a long time.  (by the way, VooX’s last post is phenomenal)

Soon after the winter classic I emailed the NHL marketing dept. pointing out how annoying and stupid it is to have so much attention on Sidney Crosby and the Penguins – in the FIRST PERIOD ALONE of the Chicago vs. Detroit winter classic there were 3, count ‘em, 3 commercials featuring Sidney Crosby and/or the Penguins.  I pointed out to them the dangers of putting all their marketing eggs into one basket.  For instance, if Sidney Crosby were to suddenly lose his ability to skate, say in a car accident, (heaven forbid, no one likes to see someone get hurt) the NHL marketing department would lose EVERYTHING!  EVERYTHING EVERYTHING EVERYTHING!  (I could post it if you’d like, it’s a nice little rant)

There are just a few things I don’t agree with, the biggest one is a post someone made on the first page saying that Todd McLellan has no loyalty to Detroit and is dead to the author of that particular post.  I disagree.  Its every assistant coaches dream to graduate to the head position and I think it is a good testament to Babcock’s abilities to have one of his assistant coaches be able to become the head coach of an NHL team.

Other than that someone out there is going to have to bring me up to speed with some of the terminology used here, such as the “Jackatoreum.”  Is it simply Bettman little lair?  If so, what is the etymology of the term?  I don’t get it.

Welcome to the A2Y 19, build up your tolerance to hard liquor and join us for a live blog next week.

And that was me making the comment… you will notice it had specifically to do with The Turtle, Claude.  We think Todd is swell around here.  He does not have the personal style or ferocity as Uncle Mike (translation he is not a Pimp like Uncle Mike) but we like the guy anyways.

At least I did until he decided to wait until the game AFTER the Red Wings matchup to play The Turtle.  You see, if we are going to do nostalgia-tour comebacks, at least we can relive the glory days.  The McCarty-Turtle fight galvanized our team.  The Captain himself points to that game as the first time the Red Wings stood together as a true team.

If Claude was going to come back so soon to our game vs. the Tuna, he rightfully belonged to us to welcome back with the D-Mac welcoming committee.

That doesn’t surprise me, Matt.  Not at all.

Aside from bitching at Red Wings fans’ senses of entitlement, paranoia, etc., and Ken Campbell’s ludicrous suggestion that Lidstrom blew off the game (Nick told reporters, in both Swedish and English, that the invitation to an All-Star Game is a huge honour and that it’s actually fun to attend and participate in the game), there’s a bottom line here.

No Red Wings looks bad for the league.  No Red Wings means both casual and harder-core fans are less likely to tune in.  No Red Wings means an implied slight to the Cup champs, even in the eyes of the media.

I actually don’t mind watching the All-Star Game, but I’m very disappointed that no Wings players will represent Detroit there.

As for the zero-Wing representation at the ASG, I’m all for it.  In fact, my vote is for making it a tradition.  Rest up, relax, and get your heads out of your asses, boys, the rest of the season starts in a week.

The idea that the league is short-changing the Wings in terms of marketing, in order to promote other teams, should definitely be true.  It’s just good business- Detroit is one of the top five revenue generating teams in the league; they don’t need to be marketed.  It would be like the league going out of their way to promote the Habs, or the Leafs, or the Rangers.  Why bother?

I don’t see the point in bitching about this.  It just comes with the territory.

Welcome aboard Fan of Legend.

For the Crosby thing, it goes farther than making him the face of the league being a risk of injury.  The bigger risk is that he’ll turn out to be a whining punk who wasn’t ready to take the reigns of a franchise.  The league could get itself in trouble if, say, their poster-boy were to be the third man into a fight and cheap shot on a guy’s ballsack, then they just ignored the incident as though it never happened.  People may think that the heads of the league are holding a double-standard when it comes to personalities they’re trying to sell.

You know what’s odd about this: Datsyuk was left out of the Skills Competition yesterday before he got hurt. Obviously, he could have just been the odd man out, but I wonder if the League didn’t already know before the injury and if the injury isn’t the reason he’s not going after all.

Just because I’m paranoid doesn’t mean they’re not out to get me.

Oh my goodness!  It’s like I’ve found my lost family!!!  I’ve never been so happy in my life.

Lovely.  Yet another impulsive youngster to run amok around the place - probably while carrying scissors.  (Just kidding - welcome to the insane asylum!)  smile

Use whatever words you want.  I use a lot of polysyllabic words, and everyone is kind enough to let me hang around - at least so far.  They do respond a little bit better to simple words, grunts, and sexual innuendo.  It’s more in their comfort zone.

I think both Lidstrom and Datsyuk would have loved to go - Lidstrom has said several times how enjoyable it is for him to play with the same great players he usually has to play against, and Datsyuk considered his selection as a wonderful Christmas present (although I think he was disappointed that Zetterberg wasn’t going, too).  I tend to believe they are both a little nicked up and need the rest - which is fine with me.

Any god simply must have a sense of humour - why else would he/she/it have invented platypus and wombats?

According to ancient Sumerian texts on the 7th day She rested and ate some cheddar fungus.  On the 8th day the first (and only) Grateful Dead guitar solo began.

Oh that’s nice.  Fan_of_Legend stumbled onto this site.  Nice.  Drunk already.

He’ll make a fine addition to the Hasek if he hasn’t already bought the liquor and beer.

Welcome aboard, mate.  As VikingDoc said, “Slainte!”

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y.
