Lowe On The Wings

Baby Brother Chicago brings it out of me, I guess. It’s strange and unusual but tonite’s Live Blog may come off as a little arrogant. I know. Stop. I know that’s weird for A2Y. Interestingly, I wrote it before reading an article at the Cult of Hockey, where they review Jason Farris’ book about NHL GMs, “Behind the Moves”. In it, Kevin Lowe talks at length about the NHL’s elite organ-I-zation, the Red Wings.
I remember being so envious of Kenny over the last, say, three to five years. He was so matter-of-fact about what was going to happen to his team next year and the year after. ‘We have this guy. He’s going to fit in there. This guy’s going to go because he’s going to want too much money. We’re going to plug this guy in.’… It was all [going to fall into place] because he knew that he had Datsyuk signed. He knew he had Zetterberg signed. He had Lidstrom signed for two more years. With just those guys, you can win.

Datysuk and Zetterberg are great… but really you can just simply say with Lidstrom alone signed, you can win.
It will be intersting to see how this team plays once he is gone. It was like the penguins with Mario… any night he was playing I felt like the penguins were the better team. It is the same with Lidstrom. He really is that good.

Just need a call from AFRCC and I’m on it.

For the record…I don’t know this guy but I thought it was a pretty good picture.

“This is a topic near and dear to my heart, and one that I’ve written about previously. Lowe notes the argument that Holland makes – namely, that the decision to develop players in the minors is an organizational strategy, not a byproduct of depth – but then suggests that depth is the primary reason the Red Wings are so patient with their prospects”
I tend to think that it’s self sustaining. They are deep because they’re able to cultivate their younger players in the minors. And they’re able to leave their younger players in the minors longer because they’re so deep.
After a while it will keep itself going. Much like money in a savings account long enough.

And, of course, there was that loooooooooong conversation Holland and Lowe had the last time the Wings played at the Rexall. And it was right in the open, too.

About Abel to Yzerman
Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
