Michigan Sports Blog of the Week: Bless You Boys

Stand by for consistency. I’m keeping up with the Sports Blog of the Week thing. This weekend, I offer you a variety of selections then get down to business with the blog of choice. Found a few interesting ones I liked but haven’t selected for some different reasons.
First, I introduce you to Becky and her blog Sports and Spice. Great writing, enough sarcasm and between the lines innuendo to keep you interested. Plus, in her “about me” section she’s got this line: “You wanna talk Sailor?” That, in itself, would usually be enough earn her Blog of the Week honors. But…she’s got a list of 5 up there today that Dive fans would undoubtedly enjoy, and yes some of our female A2Y readers as well. I can point you guys there with good heterosexual conscience, but I can’t give her the title this week. Sorry Becky.
The second blog I’m going to mention, but not award the weekly title to, is Long Live the Lindell AC. Great idea for a blog title. Great idea. The Lindell AC always held mythical status for me. I’d read about it, heard about it and always wanted to visit it…but it’s long closed. So, I was ready to name it the Blog of the Week even before I looked at it, then saw they haven’t updated since April and that made me sad.
Found another one today that I couldn’t resist, simply based on the title. You know me. You know my contention that Rocky Balboa is the true American hero. “Rocky”, the film, is the great American story. “Rocky”, the man, is who we all should aspire to be. So…when I saw Clubber Lang’s Basement...well, I had to visit. Great stuff, great looks at the disaster that is the Lions and strong opinions on the Tigers. But, unfortunately, it’s been a month since they posted over there. No title. Not yet.
So I continued my search and came to a few conclusions: there are approximately 785 Tiger blogs. No, probably not that many, but man they are all over the frigging place. I’m sure they’ve all been in existence pre-2006. Right? Moving on. Moving on. Second conclusion: I’ll never read a blog with a title of “Detroit Sports That Matter” and then claims the teams they feature are the Tigers and Lions.
But I did find a blog that easily deserves the honor and it’s one of the 785. 1984 was the summer many of us point to as the best of our lives. Sparky had guaranteed a title within 5 years and ‘84 was his fifth season. Kirk Gibson and Dave Rozema were pillaging the Detroit suburbs for bleach blonde twins (they finally found them). Jack Morris was sullenly brilliant. Lance Parrish was living in pre-Sen. Mitchell bliss. And we watched them go wire to wire. So, when I found Bless You Boys today, I was hooked.
Ian Casselberry’s got himself a site. I like the fact that he writes a lot and it’s all quality. Plus he’s got some graphical sarcasm that I definitely appreciate. His use of imagery depicting men on fire, horrendous explosions and various disasters; then tying them to the Tigers bullpen reminded me of our Stress Train pictures of last May.
He’s got game previews, game recaps, speculation, sarcastic reactions and plenty of it. Great site, good stuff for Tiger fans. Back to the blog title for a second: I didn’t see glaring references to the ‘84 season, so I was a little disappointed since BYB, to me, will always be an ‘84 thing. But, just giving a blog that title is enough of a tribute to keep me happy.

About Abel to Yzerman
Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
