Mirtle: Hossa a Hawk

Kopecky a Hawk too, and this is interesting from Kevin Allen,

With Hossa signed with Chi 4 12 yrs, I have ‘Hawks at $34 mill for 8 players in 10-11 with no Kane, Toews, Keith

From Elliot Friedman’s Twitter account,

Pierre LeBrun (the real one) reports it is 12 years, $5.2 million per season for Hossa.

Via TSN, then James Mirtle.  No word on money or term.

And so, I’m thinking the rivalry with Chicago?  Just got a bit more intense.

I’m still looking at Pahlsson or Kronwall smasher Joel Lundqvist.

Honestly, this is all I’d expect right now--somebody who can fill that kind of role. If Kenny finds a guy who is good at that and is relatively inexpensive, I’ll consider it a good day.

I won’t try to refute what Jon just said to him, but I will give a lesson to the other pens fans out there so that they may not make themselves look as foolish as he has.

What the majority of the 19 has been saying is that we want Hossa back (I know Garth, not you), but if he leaves then we’ll wish him farewell and move on.  Nobody here said that they don’t care one way or the other.

Of course you’ll not find a Wings fan who’s happy with the fact that Hossa is playing in Chicago now.  They’re a division rival that we met in the conference finals who just got better by getting one of the ten best forwards in the league.  Find me a fan of a team that would be happy with that situation and I’ll find you a shitty fan.

All that said, wishing a guy well in a new city and wishing against him when he plays your guys are completely separate things.  I do hope he’s happy in Chicago, but I’m not going to say that I hope he’s happy in Chicago the six times next year they play the Red Wings.  What idiot fan would say that?

In conclusion, we haven’t flip-flopped on Hossa here.  Everybody who’s saying good riddance to him was saying that before today.  You’re going to make yourself look absolutely ridiculous saying otherwise about us.

Hossa’s just going to a team that has a better chance to win the Stanley Cup than the Wings do.  I have no problem with this.  Face it, the Red Wings are the New York Yankees - won a bunch of championships, but the dynasty is over.  Where’s Scott Brosius when you need him???!!!

Pens fans just can’t get over the fact Hossa left them.

It confounds them to no end that he would leave a hockey market like Pittsburgh, where hockey has been around since 1967, and has had fan support since 1991.

Who would leave such a hockey mecca???

I don’t actually think Chicago upgraded THAT much. They’ll lose out on Havlat now and it’s not really a good long-term decision. Granted, it’s nice to get a player of Hossa’s caliber so cheap, but I’m not really positive he’s the one piece the Hawks were missing. Good luck to Hossa, and I expect that he’ll win at least one cup during his stint in Chitown.

Now we can keep Happy. Let’s hope he signs around $2m. Then add Leino into the mix for about $800k. Trade / Buy Out / Waive / Put a Hit On Lilja, and we’re staring down the barrel of a 20 man roster with $1.7m to add one final FA forward. Still pretty close against the cap, and thats WITHOUT Hossa. I’d like to see us add some Dallas Drakian grit with that money.

It was definitely a good deal more money.  62 million over 12 years as opposed to 40 million over 10.  Doubtful he plays until he’s 42, but that just means that much more money to buyout the contract if they need to.

I won’t really blame him for going for the money.  It was a tangible difference.

But I agree, they may have problems in a year.

Conspiracy Theory:  Tallon and Holland agreed that Hossa will remain in Chicago for a year, and be traded to Detroit once Lidstrom takes a paycut and the Wings have the cap space to spare.  Meanwhile, there will be no problem re-upping the Chicago stars that become due.  Works for everyone, right?

Laughable.  The Wings re-loaded with Datsyuk, Zetterberg and Franzen to replace Yzerman, Fedorov and Shanahan.  They will either have Lids back on a discount in ‘11 or all his cap money freed, meaning they can have money to play with after having locked up all their stars long term.  More to the point, they are the Red Sox; they develop their own talent, run a first-rate organization and don’t chase the next shiny thing when it will screw up team chemistry or in this case, break the bank.  The Wings will find their Jason Bay to replace Hossa and will be no worse for it in the end.  And yes, I am a diehard Red Sox fan.

we simply couldn’t afford him. you can’t blame the guy for wanting something more than 40% of his value. i wish hossa the best. we gave it our best shot on a one year attempt. it didn’t work out. let’s move on. hate to see him 8 times a year, but other than that, no hard feelings about hossa leaving.

Do I really look THAT young for my age?  But seriously, no one is complaining about Hossa leaving, we all knew this was coming.  As many have said before, he picked the ONE team that we didn’t want him to go to, and that’s what stings.  I wish him luck, but he ain’t gettin’ past my Wings in the playoffs next year.  And then we’ll all sit back and watch that team implode.

The Zetterberg and Franzen deals tapered down to about $1 million to $1.5 million per year for the last three or four years.  Tick Tock was not going to give Hossa $3.5 million/year on the last four years of a ten-year deal.

The only regret I have so far is letting Conklin get away.  The thought of being locked in by the Cap with Howard will give me nightmares.  I will give Kenny the benefit of the doubt here, assuming there was more to that decision than he wants to talk about.

Hossa has been handicapped his entire career with unreasonable expectations.  I hope for his sake that is not the case in Chitown.  I never considered him among the top 10.....
Take some time to check out his career stats, PPG and you will notice there was a very small increase in his production while here in HTT, playing alongside the best in the NHL.

I would have been happy if he had signed here long term, The Wings were a good team before he came and will be a good team now that he has left.  Good luck Hoss, and Thanks.
