Mirtle: Hossa a Hawk

Kopecky a Hawk too, and this is interesting from Kevin Allen,
With Hossa signed with Chi 4 12 yrs, I have ‘Hawks at $34 mill for 8 players in 10-11 with no Kane, Toews, Keith
From Elliot Friedman’s Twitter account,
Pierre LeBrun (the real one) reports it is 12 years, $5.2 million per season for Hossa.
Via TSN, then James Mirtle. No word on money or term.
And so, I’m thinking the rivalry with Chicago? Just got a bit more intense.

Now Tick-Tock can concentrate on making the Team better. Bye-bye Hossa. It was nice while it lasted.
Funny, when Hoss signed last year my husband said it was because Kopy was a buddy of his. Smart man. Now on to bigger and better things.
Lets Go Red Wings!!!!!

I’m sure he wants to get a long look at the youngsters when training camp rolls around. If anyone remembers, he really would like to have some significant cap space for when he really needs it (like at the trade deadline in late Feb. for example).
So it will not surprise me if he does nothing till training camp. If he goes that route, believe me, he really has a lot of confidence in the farm.

8, 6, whatever.
HTT: bringing conklin back delays the inevitable. the wings need to develop a goalie to replace osgood at some point. free agency isn’t an option given how little we generally devote to the position. we have to find out whether howard is a gamer and if not, move on to larsson and mccollum. if we suffer a bit in the process of developing him or one of the others, so be it. we’ll be better off in the long run.

maybe you guys can help me understand this
the Rangers trade away colton orr and then sign Brashear??
was orr’s cap hit that high ?
and that is a damn shame about Conks he was a great goalie
Posted by M71 on 07/01/09 at 02:58 PM ET
Well, wasn’t expecting this one. My father (the Hawks fan in the family) is pleased, but noted that he is definitely concerned about Kane and Toews next year. I’m sad to see Hossa go to the Hawks, but am just about over it. It will make the family Hawks/Wings games next year more interesting.

Couldn’t be any worse in terms of frustration than was Osgood’s regular season last year…could it?

I learned a long time ago to not try to understand anything the Rangers do. Just point and laugh when it inevitably goes to shit on them.

Their own people don’t understand that…my guess is Sather is pleased about the money he just saved on unloading Gomez (and switching to Geico) that he’s just tossing out the chump change contracts just to prove he can sign guys for less than $5 mil.
It’s a shame Conklin is leaving, but it’s time for him to get another crack at the top spot. We’re just glad he didn’t go to the Dive. I’ll feel a little bad every time we score on the BBBB’s (see you in Stockholm, Conks!)

Why do people forget that the Wings also signed Notre Dame’s MVP Jordan Pearce? You know, the same guy who beat the Wolverines in the NCAAs? Remember him?

Hossa to Chicago.
Man, never saw that coming.
Best wshes, Hoss. Thanks for your efforts.
Time to suck it up and move on.
The Detroit Red Wings are STILL the best professeional hockey organization, top to bottom. We will keep our heads held high as the task before us turns into a plan to succeed. And that plan is carefully, analytically, masterfully being developed by Tick Tock, Uncle Mike, ... you know the men we trust. Be assured they will place the best team possible on the ice for the ‘09-’10 season!
Is it October yet?
That’d be SECOND best. Because your team finished second. Hey, no shame in being the second best team in the league.

Ha, Bulin to the Oilers. Not so worried about Chicago anymore.

Finishing second doesn’t necessarily mean you aren’t the best, maybe someone just got the better of you in one-seven game series.
Oh and by the way, who moved the rock? Oh and I don’t mean the rink where Brodeur got beat twice in less than a minute in game 7. Round 1 exit? Ouch. How’s the golf game progressing? You’ve had plenty of time.

So, you are fine with not making it to the finals until 2014?
Howard is not a gamer, and everyone knows it. Kenny would be glad to unload him if any team will boost their offer up to TWO popcorn vendors for him. Putting that much pressure on McCollum or Larsson too early could destroy their careers.

Not so sure about that logic there Puckhead.
You’re right, the Wings came 2 goals short of their 2nd stanley cup in as many years, but I’m not sure that qualifies this years victor as the unequivocal best team in hockey.
In the last decade the Wings have the most
-Regular Season Wins
-Post Season Wins
-President’s Trophies
-Division Titles
-Conference Titles
-Stanley Cups
of every team in the NHL. I’m going to go ahead and say it’s pretty logical that the Wings are the best team in hockey right now.
...is it FRIGGIN’ OCTOBER YET!?!?

I am absolutely not comfortable with Jimmy howard getting more than 10 starts in a season for us. If we have to keep him around this year as our backup while the kids in Grand Rapids grow, then I suppose I can live with that, but Howard is not a viable long-term solution for us in net.
Posted by J.J. from Kansas on 07/01/09 at 03:17 PM ET
I’m withholding judgment on Howard until he gets a real stint in the Big Show with some sort of stability. Remember, we don’t need him to be flashy or to stop everything…just to be steady and sound and mentally strong for the long periods of inaction follwed by the one-minute frenzy. Able to shake off the soft goals he may give up here and there is a plus.
Posted by AndrewFromAnnArbor from Fortress Europe on 07/01/09 at 03:18 PM ET
I’m really suprised Chicago didn’t resign Bulin. Sounds like they’ve had some interest in Huet, and Khabi seems to be the hands down better goaltender. See: Game 4, 2009 WCF.

+1, Kate. I have no problems if Tick Tock doesn’t sign any UFA till training camp. If there was a good deal that he can make, he would’ve already had done it.

Not for a long time (he’s still got another RFA contract in him), and not at all if Mike Babcock has anything to say about it.

I agree. The Organization is very picky when it comes down to who is of the best character, has the work ethic, and desire. I trust Tick-Tock.
I guess it came down to principal with regard to the money Hossa’s agent thought was appropriate and, there is no way he was worth more than any of our top guys.
Like Pavs said,” You can’t make all the money in the world.” Or something to that effect.

Posted by M71 on 07/01/09 at 03:34 PM ET
So Chicago just got better offensively, but defensively worse. Are they still going to try and unload Huet? They could always sign Belfour to a ridiculous contract without regard to next year.
All in all, I still think the Wings will be fine. Howard just needs to be solid, he doesn’t have to play out of his mind in order to shore up a weak defense as he would on many other teams.

To the random 12 year-old penstard whining about me and the Hossa comments:
I knew he was leaving, that’s fine. What I don’t care for is him going to a division rival for not THAT much more money - in my opinion, a douche move. Understandable, I suppose, but douchey. Not only that, it will come back to bite him in the ass, mark my words.
After I found out that he wasn’t significantly injured in the playoffs, his lackluster (to be kind) performance in the finals just told me everything I needed to know about him. Great player, awesome, awesome shot - but not willing and/or able to step it up when it counted the absolute most. He of all people should have been motivated to prove something - which he inadvertently did.
So thanks for the one regular season, Hossa - see you under a pile of Kronner, second guessing, and disappointment
