Mirtle On The Selke

James Mirtle has some telling stats regarding Selke candidates. Naturally, I wouldn’t be mentioning it if Zetterberg wasn’t rightfully at the top of his statistical breakdown. I would like to, however, point out this from a reader in the comment section.
Even if Brind’Amour is not yet a Selke Trophy candidate, I would rather have him on my team than every player on this list. Yes, I am including Zetterberg.
I’m sure you all agree with that.

Check out his early awards picks, too.
He doesn’t consider Zetterberg a Hart candidate!

Damnit, I meant Zetterberg. Lidstrom is way better than both!

I admire your restraint, Chief.
Of course it wouldn’t have been very gentlemanly to bitch slap Rod’s mom in front of everyone on Mirtle, though, now would it. Who says chivalry is dead?

To imply those two players have equal values at this point in time is absurd. The easy way to make that point is to ask yourself the question, “If Zetterberg was on my team, would I trade him for Brind’Amour?” or “If Brind’Amour was on my team, would I trade him for Zetterberg?”
Seriously, give me a break. That’s to say nothing bad about Brind’Amour. He may very well be the better of the two players when we can reflect on both of their careers in 20 years. He’s going to be close to getting into the HOF, no doubt. He’s an excellent player and came on strong again late in his career. I give Brind’Amour a lot of credit, and would love him on the Wings. But implying that he is of equal value to Zetterberg is astoundingly retarded.

Wow, I would take Zetterberg over Brind’amour EVERY day of the week. It isn’t even close really in my mind.

Brind’Amour is excellent defensively, but cmon, offense wins games.
Zetterberg would be chosen by me over Rod.

I enjoy Mirtles blog very much, but honestly he is very young. His fascination with seasonal stat, and early season stats pretty well sums that up.

The season’s 30 per cent over big guy.
(And I’m really not sure what qualifies as ‘really young’ in your books, but it’s likely not me.)

Yes it is, and you were highlighting and making projections a month ago.
I still admire your blog,
Maybe you could write about how many team there were in the NHL when you started reading the sports pages.
At my age, really young means you probably did not attend any games before expansion started, and missed the Leafs last Stanley.
Sorry, if I upset you, it was unintentional.

In the spirit of helpfulness I try to maintain thoughout this time of year, I’d like to give James M. some simply fantastic column ideas for the next few weeks.
“Why I’d rather have Tim Thomas on my team than Martin Brodeur.”
“Gretzky? What a loser. Give me Jari Kurri any day of the week.”
“This Week: A five-part dissertation on why Chris Chelios should be playing ahead of Nick Lidstrom.”

Brind’amour vs Lidstrom? Wow, even as a Wings fan I don’t think that is an argument that could be settled.
