Monday With The Deep Diggers

Two days after the fact and Dwayne Roloson’s sprawling second-period save Saturday night is still the topic of conversation around the Wings.

...then Cleary was asked about the save.

The one Edmonton goalie Dwayne Roloson’s made in the first period, with Cleary all alone beside the net for a one-timer, that will be on every NHL highlight DVD for the next decade.

“I didn’t think you guys would bring that up,” Cleary said. “To be honest with you, I don’t know what else I could have done with it. He made a highlight-reel save. My hat’s off to him.”

Yes he did and so’s mine.  But...watch the clip.  Cleary settles the puck just momentarily before shooting. If he one-times it, Roloson’s beat.  Something else about that particular sequence.  Every time I watch it, I like the way that play was set up more and more.  A nice pass from Samuelsson to a moving Datsyuk, who zips it cross-ice to an open Cleary.  I like that line.

In discussions with Helene St. James a few of the Wings confirmed what several of you said yesterday: it was an encouraging trip way West.

“You can’t compare the road trips,” assistant captain Henrik Zetterberg said after Saturday’s 4-3 shoot-out loss at Edmonton.

“We’ve been working real hard this road trip. Maybe not the best game we had in Calgary, but we bounced back (Saturday) and played real hard and it gives us the confidence to keep going.”

“We really played well in Vancouver,” Cleary said. “We didn’t play well in Calgary, and I thought we really played well (Saturday). We played well in a lot of different areas—we moved the puck well. We generated a lot of shots on Rollie—we did exactly what we wanted, and we limited them to only 21 shots.”

And no one wants to say it, but it would appear that the problem I refuse to speak of is coming around. Better shots. More movement, and more time for Dan Cleary as Mike Babcock looks to ride that hot hand.  Overall, Babcock was pretty blunt with Khan(!).

“We were better than them. In my view, it wasn’t even close,’’ Babcock said. “Their goalie (Dwayne Roloson) was good, but we had the puck (most of the game).’’

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome:

"I realize it’s the slow summer season, but can this guy tone down the tough-guy histrionics? His posts are fatiguing on an otherwise excellent site."

"I constantly marvel at how Bill (IwoCPO) and his disciples at Abel To Yzerman can be so pompous and full of themselves throughout every regular season, but come playoff time they collapse into wavering puddles of stress and nervousness as they anxiously await the impending and unavoidable collapse of the Red Wings in the post-season."
--Mile High Hockey

"I hate them because they are better than us. Of all the frigging teams…"

"I really don’t care what fans or bloggers think."
--Drew Sharp

"Why is it you Detroit fans are still so classless when you have such a classy hockey team, with such a professional GM and gentlemen players? I understand that the author of this blog is a manner-less cad, but the rest of you should be better."

"Have you ever *read* A2Y? Its the most opinionated, juvenile stuff i've read."
