So you’re a Pen fan and you’re upset. You’ve got the Zetterberg in the crease thing. And the interference thing, the obstruction thing. Plus the 0-2 hole thing (again). Well, I’ve got something that should help you in your time of sorrow.
Looking for proof of Marian Hossa’s horrific slash on Dupuis last night? I’ve got it for you, courtesy of KK reader Moocat at the Empire main page.

Aw dammit. Woops. That kinda proves the opposite doesn’t it? Well, I tried. Sorry.
Also, see this classy move by Jared at Smilin’ Like a Butcher’s Dog.

Yep. Looks like it broke when it hit Hossa’s left skate.

I am borrowing this for my apology thread on the blog. Thanks for the clarification. I am a Pens fan and can admit when I am wrong on something.
Not a slash by Hossa.

Most Knowledgeable Pens Fans know that The Wings Have Been the Better team so far, See if they can turn it around in the Burgh
And By the way the Do Interfere & Obstruct , But the do it so well that the Refs can’t call it
Every team tries to do it & like a lot of things The Wings do it better

Also, pretty entertaining and well reasoned blog without too much complaining.
I like how 75% of your readers think it was indeed slashing. Nice.

The worst thing about this: NBC is railing on this ad nauseum. Becomes conventional wisdom in a nanosecond. How tough is it for the guys in the trucks to slow this highlight down and check - then present it to the audience during a TV timeout? No, it takes some anonymous fan and his PC to validate what actually happened. Pathetic.

You forgot slashing. You know, those cheap shots after the game ‘cause someone was picking on you.
Is Shelly Therrien giving thre trolls advice today? I’d almost like to see his blubbering round face crying in the post gamers, Bylsma is actually stand up and borderline likeable.
Posted by MOWingsfan19 on 06/01/09 at 11:23 AM ET
I do not have the technological expertise to expose the next fallacy, but the overhead replay of the 3rd period scrum CLEARLY show that the puck does not cross the line and that Zetterberg does not close his hand on the puck if you slow it down. I’ve watched the highlight on ESPN online, and you can see it when they slow the play down (1:55 mark).
http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=4220556&categoryid=2459791
The puck hits the outside of his right arm and comes to a stop between Zetterberg and Osgood. Look for the stamping on the puck, and you can see it come to a stop in plain view. His left arm is nowhere near the puck (many Pens fans are claiming he swept the puck out of the net).

Any time anyone ever asks about Hossa’s “defection” again… his answer should just be “I couldn’t imaging playing for that whiny bitch Thierren for any long term contract, so I jetted. End of story”

Moocat comes up large with the evidence. +1
Not that it would matter one iota to the majority of the MSM, or the league for that matter.
Both seem hell-bent to be PIT apologists. The Malkin non-suspension is further damning proof that the rules do not seem to matter.
The scoresheet is the only column that really counts.
Game 1: DET 3 E/S goals, PIT 1
Crosby, 0 pts, -1
Malkin, 1 A, Even
Game 2: DET 3 E/S goals, PIT 1 PP
Crosby, 0 Pts, Even
Malkin, 1 G, -2
DET 5-5: +5
Griffins scoring: Gator 2 Goals, Big Rig 1 G.
Eastern Conf Champs, 2 Goals.

This, a thousand times this.
The Hossa play was no problem for knowledgeable fans who could perceive that the puck was the ultimate focus of that tie up.
The problem is that casual fans are going to hear the NBC crew and tend to assume their interpretation is correct.
I mean, hey, they’re on TV….they must know what they’re talking about, right?

TSN Icechips from Wings practice:
Centre Kris Draper (groin) skated hard today and it appears he may be ready for Game 3 tomorrow. Centre Pavel Datsyuk sat out his fifth straight game last night due to a sore foot. Coach Mike Babcock said Datsyuk’s injury has not healed as well as the team had initially anticipated. Defenceman Andreas Lilja has not played since suffering a concussion in February. - Detroit Free Press
Good news on Drapes as he is the Wings best faceoff man. But if Bab’s is inclined to play him, who do you take out?
4 Line has been amazing.
Interesting. But as Kate says: Uncle Mike always has a plan; and she is a friggin genious.

I say we all just fight fire with fire and start bitching about how Zetteberg should have been awarded a penalty shot when Fleury threw his stick trying to stop a shot.

The puck definitely comes into view in the overhead after the shot hits Zetterberg. I did not see him actually covering the puck. It seemed to take a while for the whistle to blow, but as we all learned the hard way, it’s the “intent” to whistle that actually matters…that is, on the occasion the NHL actually decides to enforce its own rules.

Thats a little more iffy.
67.4 Penalty Shot - If a player, except a goalkeeper, while play is in progress, falls on the puck, holds the puck, picks up the puck, or gathers the puck into his body or hands from the ice in the goal crease area, the play shall be stopped immediately and a penalty shot shall be awarded to the non-offending team. See also Rule 63 – Delaying the Game.
It’s the “gathers the puck into his body” language that has me a little bothered. But that’s for a different thread and video wouldn’t you say?

I sit Sammy. I understand that he has come up with big goals in big situations, but overall he has been excruciating to watch. The man is streaky like no other and he seems to be on the downside now. It is like watching a less talented Slava Kozlov.

Are you saying Dupuis should have gotten a penalty for playing with a broken stick?
As Craig Simpson said on HNIC right after the play, a good non-call by a professional ref.
Posted by Paul from Motown Area on 06/01/09 at 11:46 AM ET
I thought Leino played better than he did in Gm2 versus Gm1. Lets not forget about fresh legs either. Lets not forget Leino is one of the few Wings with fresh legs still and is eating up about 8-9 mins of ice a night. I really feel Sammy should come out, he wasn’t getting pucks deep and his work on point for the PP has been marginal.

LOL, after only two games, denial creeps in for frustrated Pens fans.
Your team has six goals in five playoff games at the Joe in the last two years. Do any of you Pens fans, any of you, think that may be a somewhat problematic issue??
Are they dumping the steel waste in the drinking water over there??
Posted by Red Winger from Sault Ste Marie on 06/01/09 at 11:50 AM ET
Sammy will not get taken out. Going back to the days of J Willy, Uncle Mike LOVES the right handed shot at the blueline on the PP. Abdelkader has been a firecracker on that fourth line, so I would think that he stays (plus he’s a center, and as much as the Wings have been tossed out of the circle this post season, we need as many centers as possible). Leino has been good, but I’d rather have Draper.
I trust in Uncle Mike, he always has a plan.

It’s the “gathers the puck into his body” language that has me a little bothered. But that’s for a different thread and video wouldn’t you say?
In that video, there is no evidence that Zetterberg uses his arm/hand to gather the puck. The puck ricochets off his right arm and comes to a stop in the goal crease. That can be clearly seen. It would be nice to have another 10 sec of footage to see how the puck gets covered after it came to a stop, but when Zetterberg is getting up, the puck is not under his upper body or arms.
Posted by Chase from Pontiac, MI on 06/01/09 at 11:54 AM ET
C’mon guys, you do realize that Sammy is one of Bab’s favorites, and he generally shoots the damn puck (where it ends up is anyones guess).
Sammy has 9 pts, and is +7
Leino 1 pt, +1
Maltby 1 pt, -1 (The only minus on the team).
Babs sure as hell isn’t pulling Helm or Gator. Malts has been good these last few games.
I’m with J.J., it has to be Leino.

don’t dare post that at thepensblog.com…

Right on, Ozman. Yes, the Pens have had some tough breaks. But let’s be real, the refs “let ‘em play” in each of the first two games, so both teams could point to a half-dozen non-calls in each game they might have liked to see called.
In game one the thing with Z’s glove on Ozzie’s back was curious, I grant you that, but the fact remains the Pens D has been no better than average, while Detroit’s has been excellent, and Fleury has been no better than average, while Osgood has been stellar, and that’s the difference in the series. For all the Pens quality territorial play, the Wings outplayed them in two of three key areas, and the results show it.
Just for those that didn’t figure it out, I’m counting the three key areas as goaltending, defense, and offensive zone possession/forecheck. Pens have been better in the forecheck, but Detroit has been considerably better in the other two categories.

Lets not forget Leino is one of the few Wings with fresh legs still and is eating up about 8-9 mins of ice a night.
Leino has had some trouble getting pucks deep as well. Last night, one in particular comes to mind in which he is crossing the blue line and decided to flip the puck through a defender to the man a step behind him and about 10 feet to his right.
Game 1 he tried to carried it himself through 2 defenders and coughed it up just a few steps in from the blue line, and once again on the right side skated the puck into a defender and the boards and lost it.
I think he’s having a little trouble acclimating to this aspect of playoff hockey and how it differs from the AHL. Until he gets used to where bodies are going to be, he should make the safe play here and bang it in.
I think he is going to have consistent 20 goal/60 point seasons once he gets going, and one or two breakout seasons eclipsing 75 points.

Are you saying Dupuis should have gotten a penalty for playing with a broken stick?
Well:
1. No because he immediately dropped it
2. Filppula scores like 5 second later so the Penalty would had been negated by the goal?
What I WAS saying is that there was no Hook or Slash on the play, it was clean.

This is interesting, a look at PIT (regular) minus players:
D Philippe Boucher -2
L Matt Cooke -3
L Pascal Dupuis -4
C Tyler Kennedy -5
C Jordan Staal -7 Third line center, has the worst +/- on the team.

I thought the depth of the Penguins down the middle was unrivaled and to be feared. You must have imagined that stat.
