Fire on Ice brother. Fire on Ice. The Wings, in their never-ending quest to keep their fans informed and happy, have unveiled next year’s marketing slogan. If you haven’t seen it, here’s the image to accompany it.
Like it? Great. You’ve got the banners, the Winged Wheel in a position of strength amongst the logos of some other squads who will fall far short of Detroit’s ‘08 Cup coronation and an action verb..."igniting." Powerful stuff.
But hey...take a closer look. What are all those little boxes beneath the banners?
Oh...yeah.
Empty seats. How appropriate.

Back to Fire on Ice? Isn’t that the Calgary Flames motto? You know… Flames.... fire.... ice??
Why not. Every other team wants to take “Hockeytown,” so why not take another team’s stupid marketing slogan?
(And I think they are known as the Falmes in some circles, now. Hee-hee.)

I can see the new Fire and Ice Cocktail being served at the Joe, for $12.50.

Peppermint schnapps with Red-Hots as garnish?

That promotional material looks like it was done in MSPaint.
Actually, it looks even more like a Powerpoint slide.
How pathetic.

Are the Caps going back to their old logo? Thats the logo they used on the Wings banner.

Yes, they are.

This was ESPN2’s hockey motto a long time ago.
Posted by Steve from New Jersey on 07/15/07 at 01:27 PM ET
Speaking of ESPN, the amount of bitter I feel toward them (given the information of their anti-nhl ways, since its not on their network) is quite large. Nearly unfathomable. No, I can fathom it, and the hate I have for them right now cannot be matched by any other evil in the world.
As an aside, im putting together an article regarding the philosophy of hockey. I’m a philosophy student about to enter my master’s program up here in canada. I went to windsor for the undergrad and am going to kitchener-waterloo for the master’s (the place Jim Balsille (sp?) originally wanted to take the penguins (I wouldve been enthralled). Anyway, if anybody is interested in this article I’m putting together, I should have it done in about a week. Email me if youd like a copy at .

PS: Paul Kukla and Spector are brilliant.

Oh shoot, I failed to think that Paul may be opposed to a sort of self promotion here on these forums: note that I had no intention of self promotion or whatnot here, and that the above message can be erased without any offence on my part being taken.
I simply have a thing being writting that is pasisonate about hockey, in all its detail, is all.

Under the… I have no issue with self promotion and actually encourage it in the KK Forum. When the new KK comes out, hopefully it will be a bit more attractive and gain some attention.
Now back to A2Y.., where I have no input, it is the Sailor’s blog and will stay that way.

Are the Caps going back to their old logo?
No. They are going to a similar logo to what they wore in the 80’s, but it’s not the same.

Please tell me that they didn’t hire someone to design that.

I actually agree with Thomas on this one. I wonder what brilliant mind came up with that one. Calgary wouldn’t even use this. Bah. Oh well I’m in it for the hockey not the slogans.

Maybe the same folks who told them to change the NHL logo from orange and black to black and silver, to evoke the shining look of the iconic Stanley Cup, and make the letters go upward left-to-right instead of downward, to evoke a positive trajectory for the future of the sport.
Could be worse--ask a Boston fan about the “It’s called Bruins” campaign.

About Abel to Yzerman
Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome:

"Hell, I guarantee the content co-opters at Abel to Yzerman were about to link this article under the heading “Bitter Blues Fans” again right up until they just read that last half-sentance. Thanks but no thanks, you Kukla hangers-on."
--St. Louis Game Time
"I realize it’s the slow summer season, but can this guy tone down the tough-guy histrionics? His posts are fatiguing on an otherwise excellent site."
--A2Y Fan, Eternal_Fields
"I constantly marvel at how Bill (IwoCPO) and his disciples at Abel To Yzerman can be so pompous and full of themselves throughout every regular season, but come playoff time they collapse into wavering puddles of stress and nervousness as they anxiously await the impending and unavoidable collapse of the Red Wings in the post-season."
--Mile High Hockey
"I hate them because they are better than us. Of all the frigging teams…"
--In The Cheap Seats
"It's just a shame that the most classless, uneducated, lowbrow fanbase in the league gets this sweep. Red Wing fans don't deserve their team."
--Thhom
"I really don’t care what fans or bloggers think."
--Drew Sharp
"Why is it you Detroit fans are still so classless when you have such a classy hockey team, with such a professional GM and gentlemen players? I understand that the author of this blog is a manner-less cad, but the rest of you should be better."
--A2Y Fan, Jeff Beaumont
"Have you ever *read* A2Y? Its the most opinionated, juvenile stuff i've read."
--Paul Nicholson

I was reading somewhere that season ticket holders usually get discounts! Who knew teams would do this to reward those willing to buy an entire plus the pre-season games (same price too, btw)? And Jimmy D did say - as you noted as well - that they recognize the economic travails the region faces, so they’ll keep prices the same. We also get 39% of our home games against just the Central again, although I do recognize the Wings can’t do anything about THAT.
