As part of the site’s re-design, I canvassed the 9 A2Y regulars.  I emailed each one claiming I was the widow of a deposed Liberian dictator and that I had millions to place in their bank accounts for safe keeping until I could retrieve it.  Naturally, each regular responded quickly with their account information.  I plan to embezzle twenty dollars from each and send the money directly to Dwayne Klessel so that I can have access to only the hottest rumors.

I also listened to them when they said they wanted more info on Wing prospects, that fans in Hockeytown are hungry for news from TC.  Actually, I haven’t canvassed anyone, no one’s said a word to me about more news on the prospects and that number is really 8, not 9.

Regardless, the kids hit Center I.C.E last night.

A few thoughts from Friday’s 3-2 loss to the Atlanta prospects ...
-- Igor Grigorenko skated on the left side of Evan McGrath’s line with Jan Mursak on the right. The Red Wings’ top scoring line created some chances, but didn’t finish well. Grigorenko started slowly, but played solid second and third periods.

We can talk all we want about the Kindls, the McGraths, the Helms’ and the Mursaks.  But there’s only one real story in TC right now and that’s Grigorenko.  It’s my opinion that he has to play his way off the Wing roster, rather than vice versa. 

Sarah Lindenau from Red Wing Central (the site you should visit for legitimate prospect news) broke the first prospect game down into plus/minus.

PLUS

Jonathan Ericsson — The 6-foot-5 blueliner was Detroit’s best player, scoring a goal and playing a steady game paired with Jakub Kindl.

Jan Mursak — The skilled winger had several good scoring chances, particularly late in the game skating with Evan McGrath and Igor Grigorenko.

Darren Helm — The first-year pro used his speed to pressure the Thrashers’ defense into turnovers, resulting in some quality scoring chances.

Looking for stats from last night? RWC has those too.

I strongly considered live-blogging the Wings’ first prospect game of the year.  It was a serious temptation, but I decided to watch High School Musical II instead.  Thankfully, the Atlanta Journal Constitution has Craig Custance; a dedicated hockey guy. 

Michigan College Hockey has a breakdown of former collegians participating in the prospects camp/tourney and mentions current Wing and former Northern Michigan University hero Dallas Drake.  I happened to attend NMU at the same time as Drake and seem to vaguely remember him beating the snot out of a friend of mine in a crowded Marquette bar.  It was one of those college memories that fade with time but still has the ability to scare me when I think about it too much.  No mention of that specific incident in MCH’s blog post, but I looked just to be sure.

You gotta think that nobody looks forward to this time of year more than the Traverse City Record Eagle.  For two weeks, TC’s the center of the Wing universe and you just know that three-hour trek is too far for even the most ambitious digger (MacLeod aside), so the Eagle’s Dennis Chase is the guy we turn to for Wing news.

A number of players have used the tournament as a launching pad to their professional careers.

“(Pavel) Datsyuk and (Henrik) Zetterberg played in this tournament,” Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said Thursday as he watched his team’s prospects practice. “There have been great players every year at this tournament and it will continue to be that way.”

This sounds like fun:

At the 9:10 mark there was a fight, and not surprisingly it was Stoesz dropping the gloves against Detroit’s David Jarram. Both got their licks in pretty good, Stoesz landing a bunch of rights, then he finally wrestled Jarram to the ice. More to come after the game…

Grigorenko actually being one of RWC’s pluses would have been the full meal.  Getting a mere mention in RWC’s plus category is more like the dog finding a table scrap.

Still, better than nothing at all, I suppose.

This tidbit from Red Wings Corner was what caught my eye...-- “Goalie Dominic Vicari was a standout with Detroit being outshot 32-21”

You can never have too many goalie prospects in the system.
