Peter Budaj’s stopped 39 of the 40 shots he’s faced. JoeSay Three or Four’s not been so fortunate, allowing 8 goals on 36 shots. No one would question Joel Quenneville if he decided in favor of Budaj starting Tuesday night. It’s the common sense approach.
Joel?
“Jose’s going to play,” Quenneville said. “He’s been our guy. He’s had a great stretch run for us and was great in the first series and we expect him to be a big factor going forward in this series.”
Umm, Joel? He’s already been a big factor.
Wings light him up again and six months of success in Denver is down the drain. With free agency looming, there’s a good chance 60’s got one bad period of hockey left in his Dive career.
Cool. Running a Dive goalie out of town? Man, I’d find ways to write about that for years.
Let’s see what the Dive bloggers have to say. They were awfully active here on A2Y right up to Game 2, so I’m thinking they must be just tip-tapping away. Let’s take a look.
Nothing from Joe at Mile High Hockey. Gobbles?
Detroit is vulnerable. Make no mistake about it, after game 1 Detroit and their fans should be scared.
Terrified. That was before Game 2. After? Nada. Shane? Strangely silent, like most of his pals, since Saturday evening. But when he was still posting, he hit the nail on the head.
I would go with Budaj. Sure, Theodore got the team this far but you can’t play him just because you feel you owe him anything. You play the goaltender who looks like they can do something for you. And if Theodore plays on Tuesday and lets in the first goal, the team is going to be supremely demoralized.
Exactly.
But apparently Quenneville disagrees. I’m with you Joel. 100 percent.

I have often heard insanity defined as: “doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results.”
Methinks Coach “Q” might be insane; not that it particularly bothers me in anyway.
EGAD! Dive fan must be beside themselves, not literally, I mean figuratively.

What the Dive need to do now it just go ahead and announce 3/4 the starter for Game 4. That way, all the Wings can call their wives and let them know that they’ll be home sometime early on Friday May 1 for a few days while the series between Dallas and San Jose finishes up. I agree with Quenville’s decision 100% as well.

Sorry, make that May 2. My bad!!

I’m enjoying the extra day. It’s 24 more hours to savor the Absolut. It’s also an extra day for the Wings to acclimate themselves to the mile-high altitude. Hopefully, Mike gets them a bit of a workout today.
Here’s something else I’m enjoying—Franzen. He has me giddy. After years of watching role players on other teams come out of nowhere during the playoffs and ruin my summer, it’s nice to finally have a kick-in-the-sac player of our very own doing the very same thing to others (although Franzen hasn’t exactly come out of nowhere—not with the March he had).

LOL Coach Q was an idiot in St Louyis and he continues to be an idiot in Denver. Great! Play JoeSay Taaayodooore! I’m all for that. I love it, you moron.
GO WINGS!!!

Posted by Shane from Saskatoon on 04/28/08 at 09:25 AM ET
So Shane, tell us what you really think of “Q” playing Jose “three or four” in game 3.
I’m sure I speak for most of the 19 here at “A 2 Y” that think “Q” is a freaking genious!
Posted by Jeff OKWingnut from Quest for 12 on 04/28/08 at 09:54 AM ET
I think JQ is 1) giving Theo a vote of confidence and hoping that vote will 2) make him look like a genius if Jose comes back to 1st round form.
This is a huge gamble but it *is* a coaching decision. I thought he was being a coward for not switching goalies but this is actually a very brave move.
Not a smart one, but a brave one.

Sorry, Orst, but that is a Peter McNab argument if I ever heard one… Tough hockey player. Craptacular analyst…
I’ll have to disagree with ya on the coward part, but I definitely agree with ya on the stupid part.

I can’t understand not starting Budaj.
It isn’t as though no one else in the playoffs had a nominal number one goaltender struggle, a backup who came in and played very well, and the coach then decided to continue with the backup. It would be one thing int he regular season, even in a tight race, to see if he could work his way back into form. It’s another thing in the playoffs.
He could even spin it as not losing confidence at all, but giveing him some extra time to get fully healthy and play up to his previous standards when he returned to the net.
Unless there is something else - if Theodore has played dramatically better at home this year, or Budaj was horrible, or something like that - otherwise, it’s like he is going to do the same things he has done all year and hope that this time the result is different than the last two games. Hope doesn’t seem to be a viable coaching strategy, but what do I know.

Well said, O-Joe. For a while there it felt like Ellis was going to be next in line to ruin our summer.
To my surprise St. James wrote an entertaining “get to know him”-article about Franzén. You’ve probably already seen it - if not, here’s a link:

LOL
Alright, I submit. I was actually correcting myself from a previous post where I said Q wasn’t being a coach at all; I was wrong, he’s just a terrible coach.
Here is what I’m wary of though: If JoeSay does get back to 1st round form–––stop laughing–––then Q will look great/ smart and all those things he’s really not.
Posted by Osrt on 04/28/08 at 11:24 AM ET
I think starting Theodore is going to blow up in JQ’s face. All it’s going to take is an early goal by the Wings to completely deflate the Avalanche.
If Budaj was in net and an early goal was scored, it’s easy to write off as jitters and push it out of your mind. With Theodore, his psyche and the team’s confidence in him seem to be at the point just before the straw breaks its back.
If Theodore does end up coming through and playing out of his mind - which he’ll need to for the Avs to win - JQ will look like a genius but I’ll still assume he just got lucky ![]()
It’s mildly ironic that most Avs fans pissed and moaned - myself included - when Q would swap goaltenders willy-nilly through his tenure with the Avalanche and now we’re pissing and moaning that he won’t do that. However it’s two completely different scenarios as there is no more margin for error.

Exactly. Budaj gives up a goal, and the team thinks, that’s okay, just one, he’s been playing well and will shut them down, so all we need is two.
Theodore gives up a goal, and the team thinks crap, here we go again. Wrong series, but it’s like tossing chum in the water.

He did seem to be shuffling quite a bit during the season, but he has to realize there is a difference between switching goaltenders on a whim or out of boredom or a desire to do something, and switching goaltenders because one guy is playing better, hasn’t he? Right?
On the other hand, if Theodore looks so horrible so early that Budaj is put in before Detroit scores four or five or so goals, he might be able to hold the fort solidly enough that Colorado can come all the way back and win. And if that happens, and the coach decides to put Theodore in game four instead of Budaj, the man should be locked in a car trunk in an undisclosed location by his own players.

Dear Shane,
We at A2Y send out condolences during this difficult time for you and yours. Just remember that your team will soon be in a better place, a place where you will be able to hear the Blues and play with tame Coyotes.
We take this moment of silence so that we may hear the magical sound, that silent scream, of a golf ball hitting the rough.
Absolut Regards,
A2Y

It took me a while, but I chimed in on the “goalie controversy.”
Here.
The only controversy is the fact that Coach Joel Quenneville still has a job.

Orders from Frank Giggy to drive down Theo’s asking price for his next contract?
Posted by WingInTO on 04/28/08 at 12:19 PM ET
The good thing about 3/4’s performance so far in this series (other than the obvious) is the fact that I read online not too long ago that Tick Tock Kenny may be interested in signing JoeSay in the offseason. Probably not so much now. Keep your eyes on Buffalo and Ryan “Yo-Mama-Ween” Miller, Kenny, Please!

You really have to wonder just how the Av’s players “mentally adjust” to “Three or Four” getting the nod again. They “know” Budaj has only surrendered 1 goal. They “know” Josey had given up 8 in about 60 mins.
It would be natural to assume then, that the Av’s are going to be “extra conscious” of playing tight defensively - - at the cost of generating scoring chances. Of course, its not like they have had all too many of those to begin with.
A quick goal or two on Josey, and you have to assume he gets the hook. Wonder if that goal or two turns out to be the difference in the game?

Holy armadillos, Batman!
This place is getting way too friendly for me!
Luckily I have my friend Absolut who always lends an eager ear. I think I’ll take him with me for a road trip and run over a few kittens.
By the way, was I duped in thinking we agreed to lay off the medication until after the playoffs?
And Joe, great work with the HTML, genius.

Take this for what it’s worth, but according to Khan(!) at mlive, Forsberg skated on a line with Sack-ic and Brunette in practice and that Forsberg is “hopeful” to play but not definite. I guess Petey will wait until tomorrow morning to see if his yeast infection has cleared up before he decides if he wants to play or not.

Mind games from Quenneville. He’s either a sublime genius or a stark raving lunatic, and quite possibly both. Only thing I know is that there is no question about Joe-Ted’s mental state. He’s alternating sh*tting himself in his ghetto-fabulous Denver loft and talking to the paisley-colored wolverines that he’s convinced live in his jockstrap. Every third hour he pauses for breath, and a procession of tiny hockey players wearing red and white dance in his head while “We’ll Meet Again” plays at 120 bpm.
And he’ll be out on the ice tomorrow evening right after the national anthem. Beautiful.
Next stop the ECHL, Mr. Q.
