Note To Khan(!): Your Captaincy Is In Jeopardy

While I was galavanting across our nation and avoiding any reminders that the Wings allegedly lost a playoff series, A2Y staffers from Delta Community College outside Saginaw were assigned the task of tracking our Diggers the past few months.  Their findings boiled down to this:  Chris McCosky is finding his voice as not only a Wing beat writer, but…sit down…a guy who’s not afraid to share an actual opinion.

Here’s an example from two days ago.

On another note, god bless Brett Lebda. The Toronto Maple Leafs, who apparently did not have access to any Red Wings game footage from last season, signed Lebda for two years at $1.45 million per. Unbelievable.

Nice.  And he’s on a roll.  He’s got a ditty in today’s Detroit News that should make all 19 of you proud.

Still blushing from the Wings’ full-court press last Tuesday, Modano told me, “There isn’t any other team. It will be here (Detroit) or I’m not playing. I think it’s narrowed to that.”

“Still blushing…”  Frigging classic.  Did you see what he did there?

And this…

Another issue here, too, is his wife, actress Willa Ford. We don’t know what she’s thinking about any of this, but presumably it would be better for her to have her husband playing in California than Detroit or Minnesota.

New to us?  Nope. We hit that issue pretty hard yesterday, but it’s highly unusual that a Digger would choose to go that route; however obvious it might be to the rest of us.

We’ve hit McCosky pretty hard here the last year or so, especially last summer when Toddberculosis was signed and nobody—McCosky in particular—was bringing up the remnants of the Moore story as legitimate discussion points. So, it’s only fair that we give the guy credit where and when he deserves it.  There should be no reason a Detroit Digger can’t throw his opinion around from time to time.  Nice job.

So watch out Khan(!), you Babcockian lemming.  Your captaincy is in serious jeopardy.

That’s as much respect as anybody could expect and as much respect as Ozzie deserves while he’s still playing for us.

When Ozzie retires, I’ll spit in your eyes if you talk shit on Ozzie and his overall career as a Red Wing.  But, going into this season, he’s a goddamn player and one that came off a bad year with a bad attitude.  I don’t care for Ozzie’s feelings nearly as much as I care about the Red Wings’ record.

His past achievements mean great things to me.  But all the respect he gets from me last year is from Jimmy Howard telling everybody how much Osgood helped him during his rookie season.

Besides, what kind of disrespect are we talking here?  You’re worried that if he sucks, people are going to say that he sucks?  Isn’t that the truth?  I’m sure even Osgood himself will tell you that he needed to play better last season.  As far as I’m concerned, his place in Red Wings history is already cemented, I’m taking this year as far as his place on this year’s Red Wings team.  NOBODY gets a pass based on past performance if they don’t bring it.  If Lidstrom himself decides that he missed Brett Lebda so much, he’s going to start playing like him, you’re going to get a lot of talk about how he needs to improve.  If he furthers that by telling the media that his coach doesn’t know about his position, you’re going to get a lot of hurt and angry fans.  I don’t think any amount of Norris Trophies or Stanley Cups protects a player from criticism year-to-year.

Criticism and respect are two different things.  I don’t disagree with the critism Ozzie received for last year.  I disagreed with your statement about how much respect he deserves.  Hell, we all have bad years but it doesn’t diminish ones’ overall body of work.  Ozzie has earned my respect and I will defend his record.  We are not far apart in our view os Ozzie so why make it into an argument.?

I don’t want to start a disagreement/argument/discussion about the semantics of disagreements/arguments/and discussions, so I’ll leave it at that.

I lost a little bit of respect for him in the way he handled himself last year.  I don’t think saying that “well, that’s what he should have done” is disrepectful to him if he does come on and save the Red Wings from a faltering Jimmy Howard.  I was just disagreeing that he’s in a no-win situation.
