So you may recall that I’d opted for the NHL Center Ice Online Guaranteed To Please You plan, rather than the tried and true DirecTV. No problems, until I leave town and all goes to hell.
Logging on this evening, I see the Wings game is blacked out. A phone call to Tom at NHL Center Ice Online The Only Network Who Guarantees a Degree of Customer Satisfaction You Can’t Argue With No Matter How Pissed Off You Are resulted in his embarrassed retort that due to the fact that the NHL Network (unavailable on Verizon in DC) has bought “exclusive rights” to this game, it’s not available to those of us who have paid approximately 130 bucks to prevent crap like this happening.
So, yeah...we’ll live blog this mother, despite the fact that I can’t see it. Ken and Paul sound nifty. And, yes, I’m aware the Wings haven’t won since I left town. I expect explanations as to “mitch”, “foblog”, and the fact that this place has taken on some sort of directionless life of its own the last two weeks.
Oh, and yeah, Gary...I blame you. Ass.
1726: A 1-0 deficit has me feeling a little critical, so--because it’s what I do, and because I haven’t had a chance to peruse the stats in nearly two weeks-- I’ve taken a gander at our goaltending. Not counting the PP goal against Osgood tonite, he’s allowed 15 goals on 218 shots. Hasek: 28 goals on 199.
1734: Since Gary won’t let me actually watch the game, I’ve been reading and I see that last night was “support the hunting widow” night at the Joe. I think that’s just cute. Nice job Hahn. I also see that last night was the first “announced” sellout of the season. Not sure if that’s due to this sudden renewed rivalry with Chicago, the venison jerkey crowd or a bunch of loaded and morose UM fans.
1736: The NHL didn’t want me to see Lidstrom’s goal, but it sounded nice...AND SO DID HOMER’S. 40 goals....did anyone predict that?
1743: I didn’t see the last penalty, because Gary wouldn’t let me, but I understand Mickey Redmond’s going frigging nuts. I’m sure Gramps agrees with the call.
1803: Gary just called and reminded me I’m unable to watch this game, so I didn’t see Fedorov’s goal...but it sounded like classic Sergei. There will be at least ten goals scored in this game.
1811: Great call by Mickey Redmond--which I didn’t hear because Gary decided I shouldn’t--but Baroque pointed out in the comments that Redmond said he believed LeClaire would be back, and he is.
1821: Gary has no intention of letting me watch this game, and I’ve spent the last ten minutes trying to figure out how Barry Trotz is going to outcoach Babcock--despite the fact he hasn’t done it the last two season, with a lot more talent. When I finally, out of frustration, stopped wondering about that...I turned to Barry Melrose’s video segment on ESPN. When discussing the bitter Blues he said “and they brought back fan favorite Dallas Drake.” I stopped listening, but will post here if you’d like.
1833: Email from Gary. “How’s the game?” Boxscore is interesting. Detroit’s let up 24 shots already (to their own 16), and Zetterberg--according to the box--has zero shots on goal. Oh and Draper’s 10/12 on faceoffs.
1858: Thanks to Gramps for the heads-up and to George Malik for the revelation. If you’re looking to watch the third period, here you go.
1918: Uh oh. Anyone care to research the last time the Wings lost four straight to the Division that Gary Built? I’d bet it was pre-Bubba/BJ, in the Norris years.
1920: While I was on my recent travels to New Zealand, I asked the odd Kiwi if they follow hockey. Most said no. Around ten said they did. Of those, more than half said their favorite player was Pavel Datsyuk. What a move that was, and an amazing feed from Zetterberg.
1929: OT. Pick your winner. I say....Lidstrom.
1945: I guess it’s some sort of wacky coincidence that this evil streak ends the day I return. I’m just sayin’. Here’s what else I’m sayin’: Chris Osgood needs to be the starter. Oh, and I almost turned it off the second I heard Fedorov had the game on his stick. No need to watch that.

Well, if you can’t get the puck bouncing your way, getting your players to bounce your way can work if it gets you a 5 on 3.

Great, solid officiating… thanks Gary!
D-bag.
Oh, welcome back, Chief.

I’d say the most encouraging thing about the PP so far is tht it hasn’t been scored on.
Like, you know, thrice.
Posted by HockeyinHD on 11/18/07 at 05:41 PM ET
Thanks Dub. And HD, I’m almost--from a foblog point of view--sorry I missed last night’s game.

Gee Whiz, Mitch. if you are unable to watch, isn’t it kinda traditional that you write the wrap up yesterday.

I don’t have NHL network in Portland, even though it’s a Comcast venture, and I have Comcast. I’m f’n pissed off that I can’t see this game.
Ken Kal will have to see me through. How do they look?

Welcome back, Sailor.
I guess this has been an example of what happens when a few bored computer users are left to their own devices on a temporarily deserted foblog.
How do they look?
No clue here. I just got back in from an art fair and saw the 2-1 score. At least it was a powerplay goal against and not another shorthanded, but it’s early yet.
Anybody ever seen a Red Wing logo pendant carved in fossil ivory? Very, very cool. Almost got one, but decided against it.

I don’t see what Lindy Ruff is grumbling about. There seems to be plenty of goal-scoring in the NHL.
Maybe he shouldn’t have let his goals leave for New York and Philly and he’d be less cranky.
Posted by Baroque from Michigan on 11/18/07 at 06:04 PM ET
Goaltender change already?
Mickey thinks it’s a temporary move and Hitchcock will be putting Leclaire back in.
Posted by Baroque from Michigan on 11/18/07 at 06:06 PM ET
Leclaire back in.
You are seeing firsthand how Babblecock will be out coached by Hitchcock, Murray and Trotz all season.

Maltby in the box, keep in mind the Refs owe the jackets a 5 on 3.

There you go Gramps. Lilja in the box.

Oh crap, the mick says ozzie was trying to get an interference call on that one...the reason he was not in position.

Last night the Don mentioned the crap calls leading to 5 on 3’s..My bet is 5 on 3’s are up since the headlines read “scoring is down this year”
I questioned this on Wed.

I hate the NHL network. Once again, I have time to watch the whole game and I can’t see it. I blame Gary too. I have Comcast cable but they are not carrying it here in Denver. I am so glad I paid all this money. That is now two Wings games I have missed because of the NHL network. Thanks, Gary. ASS.
Vent done.

Maybe hockey fans should stage a coup d’etat and take over the golf channel for all hockey programming. Like the barbarian tribes sacking Rome.
It’s like both teams are just waiting for a mistake, and otherwise content to wait for overtime/skills competition.

CBJ’s are kicking our ass on the boards in this period. Remember control the boards..win the game.

Must ... stop ... procrastinating ...
Never happens. I’m a master at it.
Besides, if you have a two week period to complete a task, and start right away, it will take two weeks. If you do other things for a week, it will still be done on time, so you only spent one week on it.
Procrastination actually saves time!

Wild are leading Avs 4-1 after two. Lots of unusual names scoring for Minnesota, and Harding is playing very well.
According to the projected points totals, those are the only two teams in the division that would make the playoffs.

It’s on JRR Tolkien - my English capstone paper. 20-pager + writer’s block = slow process. Not going to bed until it’s done, though!
Gotta love Ozzie’s glove-save-to-stick-knock-it-away thing. He just oozes confidence lately.
Nice to see we can at least beat Columbus....

When I was in college, I wrote many a paper under the influence of a Coke double-gulp and four rolls of Sweetarts.
Only problem was after that sugar buzz kicked in, I spent the next three days vibrating.
It got me through organic chemistry, Latin American history, and differential equations, though. Can’t argue with results, I guess.
Posted by Baroque from Michigan on 11/18/07 at 07:48 PM ET
Hey IWO, Ken Daniels mentioned...no 4 in a row losses since mikey has been behind the bench. I think that would imply that it happened under Lewis.
Are you sure this is a win...goals don’t count and the saves don’t count..os the game..
point this out to little gary, maybe it will cause a little insomnia.

Oh, Friday night I went for a heart-attack-in-a-cup quad-expresso monstrosity plus one and a half Mountain Dew MDXs ("energy-infused soda") in an effort to pump this thing out in a single all-nighter. Still lost steam at about 3:00AM. Can’t pull the all-nighters like I could when I was a freshman, with or without caffeine....
Four and a half more pages!

Yikes! I check in and Baroque is talking organic chemistry and differential equations!
Not quite as stimulating as the Wings game on the NHL channel hosted by the FSN Ohio team of Chuck & Buck. Lot’s of excitement there ... you better betcha. Watching that game was like waiting for Mitch. You knew something was gonna happen just not sure what?!
Oh yeah, welcome back Chief! Prolly napping by now.....

What a shitty way to win (or lose)a game....
I don’t know how you can place much value on that “win”.
The game tying goal by Dats was a beautiful piece of work! I was waiting for the drop pass.

No kidding. I’m reminded of how old I am every time I fade in the evening, when my sophomore year I stayed awake for 40 straight hours to see if I’d start hallucinating. Now the idea of staying past up past midnight makes me tired.
My roommate and I had a saying for when we were spending too much time polishing our prose: “It doesn’t have to be brilliant, it just has to be done!” Good luck finishing your paper!
Posted by Baroque from Michigan on 11/18/07 at 08:16 PM ET
Only caught the end of the third, but had to listen to OT and shootout in the car. Could someone tape Lilja’s stick to his glove so he stops dropping it?
Posted by Defenseman from Grand Rapids on 11/18/07 at 09:37 PM ET
Oh, in my vent, I forgot to say, “Welcome Back Chief!” It is good to have you back.
I’m with you Baroque, I remember those days of staying up all night and just thinking of it, makes me tired. Hope the paper turned out well, Matt.
Posted by hockeychic from Denver, CO on 11/19/07 at 11:28 AM ET
Gosh, I almost always miss all the fun because I’m almost always watching a dvr’d game after the fact… well, that and fact that TV and computer aren’t anywhere close to each other. Not a pretty victory by any means, but persistence pays off and the 2 pts. are mighty important, especially after three zeros.
Lots of comments came to mind as I was reading through all of these, but I’ll spare you from all of them but one:
my sophomore year I stayed awake for 40 straight hours to see if I’d start hallucinating.
My sophomore year was back in the 70’s, and I remember a method that took way less than 40 hours. Well… kinda remember…
Oh, and welcome back, Chief. This ol’ place sure ain’t the same without you.
Posted by BobTheZee on 11/19/07 at 03:18 PM ET
There was a reason for it, believe it or not.
A friend who was taking a physcology class was reading some papers on the effects of sleep deprivation, and about a deejay at a radio station who was staying up for hours and hours as a fund-raising stunt. After 30-some hours he was really messed up and started hallucinating, and apparently with most people that is about the timeframe when those kinds of effects manifest. So a few of us started talking about how long we thought we could stay up, if we really needed to, either unaided or with caffeine/other stimulants.
I had already missed the previous night’s sleep writing lab reports for (I think) chemistry and ecology, so figured since I had already gone past the “really tired” point to the “punchy and giggly” point, why not try to pull all-nighters back to back?
I made it to 40 hours and then just crashed like a ton of bricks and slept eight straight hours, missing economics the next morning. No hallucinations, no delusions, nada. Very disappointing. I’d hoped for something.
That’s it. Just a stupid idea by a college kid. Not really very interesting or exciting at all.
Posted by Baroque from Michigan on 11/19/07 at 05:18 PM ET
Actually, Baroque, that’s pretty interesting. Back in the olden days I used to get involved in some amateur radio contests for which I would stay up for maybe 36 hours… no hallucinations, though.
I guess once one has invested that amount of time, the result of no hallucinations would indeed be kind of disappointing. But an interesting experiment, and not such a stupid idea. But speaking of stupid ideas, I have to say that, in retrospect, I certainly wouldn’t recommend my former hallucination-acquiring method to anyone… quite the opposite, actually.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.
