Oh No He Din’t….It’s a Game 1 Live Blog

Once again, for the second time the last three games, I’ll be missing the live blog tonite, DVRing the game and sitting through an official
function trying not to soil the cloth of our nation.  I’ll be receiving your comments and emails throughout and won’t read a single one.  Don’t
try to send me notes and trick me either, the ones titled, “Your House Is On Fire”.  You almost got me last time but it didn’t work.

Wings need to learn to play 60 minutes. Relaxing with a 4-1 lead is never a good thing.

Arrgh, how could they let their foots off the gas so badly that it slipped off for a whole period almost.  That game should not have been that close.  Still a win is a win.  I’ll take it.

C’mon now as much as it hurts to, give the Dive some credit for finally finding their top gear.

It wasn’t just the wings letting off the gas (although they a guilty of doing that a touch) but the dive getting their heads out of their collective arses.

Plus we always spot a team at least one goal when lillypads is in the line up.

I missed the first few minutes because of work. Does anybody know if Al defied the league and twirled the octopi?

I was at the game tonight, and it was hilarious beyond words to watch the linesmen struggle with that first octopus.  It froze to the ice and the first linesman couldn’t scrape it up with the aluminum scoop that Al handed him.  So he was literally motioning for Avs players to scoop it into his aluminum scoop shovel with their hockey stick.  No Dive came to the poor linesman’s aid, so the other linesman had to come from the far and and get a scraper from Al.  They ended up scraping up a lot of ice in the process of clearing all the ‘remains’.  The crowd booed for a while, but the linesman finally got the thing to Al, who shut the zamboni door and twriled it wildly over his head in the zamboni tunnel - they showed it on the scoreboard screens and The Joe crowd went absolutely nuts.

Another one hit the ice in the Dive zone right before a faceoff in the Wings zone - McCreary(sucks!) almost missed it, but the Colorado bench alerted him at the last minute.  The linesman got there quickly, manned-up, bare-handed the thing and got it off the ice before it froze this time.  As soon as he handed it to Al, Al shut the zamboni door and the crowd went nuts again while he twirled it over his head again.

For the record, there were plenty of minutes where The Joe was quiet enough you could have heard LittleGary wimpering about how short he is.  There were also some moments throughout the game where the crowd noise was impressive.  But the last minute and a half the crowd was on its feet and as loud as I’ve heard it since 2002.  It sucked that they let the Dive back into it, but it was a heck of an ending.

Ozzie got a lot of love from the crowd tonight.  Pavel played a great game all over the ice - we’re lucky to be able to watch him every night.  I think Cleary and Filppula are both very close to finally getting their timing back and making a splash in the playoffs.  Sammy on the point for PPs really got under my skin in a hurry - that has to end and quick.  This horse is dead, but I’m going to take one more good whack at it: Lilja should not see the ice again in a Wings uniform.  Period.

There were a number of juicy Dique opportunities that were not cashed in… they have a LOT more talent than Nashville, they just weren’t as relentless on the forecheck as Nashville.  This isn’t likely to be an easy or quick series unless the Wings clean up the sloppy play and remain consistent for 60 minutes every game.

Just finished watching after the fact and reading all the comments.  What I liked:

Wings tie it at 1 less than a minute after giving up the first goal… certainly a bigger psychological lift for Detroit and a bigger psychological downer for Colorado than if it had happened the other way around.

Keeping the pressure on until it’s 4-1.

Chasing Jose.  Hopefully now we’re in his head.  Time will tell.

Pretty much locking it down in the 3rd.  A couple of spurts where the Avs had life but this is round 2 and that’s always going to happen.

Ozzie strong when he needed to be.

The Mule.

Fewer cats on the planet after the game than at the start.

What I didn’t like:

Letting up after scoring the 4th goal.  Dammit, why do they do that???

A softie on their #2 goal.  Ozzie almost in perfect position, but not quite.  He’s gotta stop that one.

Doc and Eddie repeatedly talking about how the Avs dominated the last 15 minutes of the 2nd.  I didn’t see it that way.  I thought the Avs played better than they had earlier and had more chances, while the Wings sat back a bit.  But dominating???  No.

In the 3rd, no interference call behind Budaj’s net just before no too-many-men call.

The Wings can play better.  I imagine Colorado is saying the same thing, but the Wings can play better, better!!!  Bring on Game 2!!!

That’s exactly why the job should be left only to trained mollusc-wranglers to perform.

Missed most of the game, but I think I can determine that:

Franzen had a solid game.

Colorado turned it on late (they wouldn’t have gotten to the playoffs by rolling over at the first hint of adversity, after all).

Lilja has moved ahead of Samuelsson as the preferred human sacrifice.

Let Wings fans loose on small islands, and the feral cat population will be eliminated, enabling ntive bird species to be reintroduced without fear.  This may be a career path for this summer fo some folks.  smile

They ended up scraping up a lot of ice in the process of clearing all the ‘remains’.

gee, I’ll bet the “dent” left in the ice after that wouldn’t cause any problems...but I can’t count how many times players have tripped and injured themselves on octopus debris from them being twirled.

oh, wait…

Hoser great report from the Joe.  11 more.  11 more wins.

I’ve forgotten the emotion involved in a Colorado series.
