Next entry: Bertuzzi Era Starts The Way An Era Should…With BJ’s

Previous entry: Whoa…Wait A Second

Oh…The Angst

Good golly, the Dive are all-a-twitter.  Naturally we’ll get to them, but first your daily ITPST update, which is strikingly similar to yesterday’s.

If the playoffs started today…

(1) Bubba v. (8) Calgary
(2) Anaheim v. (7) Minnesota
(3) Vancouver v. (6) Dallas
(4) Detroit v. (5) San Jose

In other words, the same damn thing we saw yesterday. But last night was slow. Tonite is not.  I’ve decided to take back everything I previously said about not caring about the 1.  I care about it.  Deeply.  I crave it like a Dive fan craves a fruity coffee.  President’s Trophy? No thank you.  But the 1 seed, oh yes.

Sooo…I guess that means tonite’s game in Calgary’s kinda big, eh?  It’s our game in hand,  you know.  Now, should we lose?  Not tragic, considering our schedule down the stretch that features heavy doses of the little Blues, the BJ’s and the Blackhawks.

But you get the idea.

Ok.  Wow.  I had no idea I’d start such a war between the Dive “faithful” and you.  It always disturbs me to see such intense dislike between our fan base and their fan.  But, alas, it transpired last evening.  If you’re interested, you can find examples here and here.

But I do have to specifically single out one particularly distressing metaphor from HockeyinHD.

So, Dive fans can pretend to take whatever degree of solace they want in just making the playoffs, or only missing by a little, or whatever cockamamie bit of ham and slam logic they’ve cooked up for themselves, because at the end of the day (or season) they’re just putting lipstick on their 5 o’clock shadowed transvestite of a franchise.

Oh my.  Now that’s just cruel.

And straight to the glossary it shall go.

A little digging for you today.  Kulfan with a bit more on the Kopecky signing.

“Tomas was becoming a solid NHL player,” general manager Ken Holland said. “He suffered a setback with the injury this year, but we’re confident he will return and continue to improve.”

“It’s a big relief,” said Kopecky, a Wings second-round pick in 2000. “My wife is real happy, and I’m happy. I love the organization.”

Smart frigging dude.

Khan(!) says Datsyuk’s gaining confidence (great…prove it) and here’s a little ditty regarding Chelios.

“We thought this was a good time; his kids are on spring break (from school),’’ Babcock said. “He’s a real important player. The fresher he is, the better he’ll be.’‘

Something to remember for later:  not the best relationship between these two.  A topic for June.

Helene St. James spoke with half the team regarding Kyle Calder.  When she got around to the Enigma (at a Calgary hairdresser’s), the conversation turned to Jason Williams and grit.

With Calder on the ice, Lang knows he’ll get the puck one way or another because of Calder’s willingness to play in traffic.

“We had Willie there before, and he didn’t really want to do that that much,” Lang said. “He had a great shot and good speed, but I think Kyle is a little bit grittier in those areas, especially around the net and in the corners. That’s the biggest difference—Willie had more speed and more skill, but I think we had enough skill on that line already. We kind of needed a little bit more of the grit.”

Wonder if Williams still reads the Detroit papers?  If so, nothing like seeing a former teammate question your cajones to start your day.

My response if I was Williams:

“Yeah, well, what would have been the point of me going into the corners to dig out the puck (assuming Robert managed to get the puck into the corner in the first place and not turn it over at the blueline) only to give it to my centerman who would, in turn, just give it back to the opposition as he usually does?”

O-Joe,

I couldn’t agree more. Lang loses the puck when seemingly nobody is on him. It’s like there is a ghost that follows him around lifting his stick at the worst times possible.

Calder is still a huge upgrade over Williams. Now we just need to wait till next year and replace Robert Lang with someone that isn’t slow, actually understands defense, and has more tenacity on the puck.

I don’t dislike Chicken Wing fans. In fact I got a ton of family in MI, and most of them are Chicken Wings fans.

Doesn’t mean I don’t like to have a good argument once in a while.

I do find it odd that you take a jab and say the Avs “fan” and then link to two posts that highlight two different Avalanche fans.

Damn. You’re right Colin. I forgot there were two “fans” left in Dive Nation, not just one.  Better raise some banners for you both.

I’d gladly welcome the Avs in the first round. Two teams I am positive the Wings will beat in the first round—the Dique and our pal Turco. Everything else is a crapshoot.

I too was fascinated to see Lang throw Williams under the team bus.  Calder’s play has been incredible (I believe ten pts in nine games with the Winged Wheel).  If Lang could learn to keep his stick on the puck ala Datsyuk, maybe his lines +/- would actually improve.  Holland should try to resign Calder (age 28) and let the Enigma (love that monicker IwoCPO) go his merry way.  Heres hoping Big Bert can find even half his old form before the playoffs.  Hockey Gods please accept this sacrifice and heal Zetterbergs back!!!!

Babcock needs to rest Lidstrom.
He should also “rest” Lang.

An Apology…

I am completely sorry for saying Datsyuk is a diver. You were right and I was wrong, and I am a big enough man to admit those few occasions I am wrong. After watching DET-CGY I realize Datsyuk is not the flop I thought he was.

I should have said “How can anybody who cheers for a team with Hasek on it call any other team ‘The Dive’ ? “

Man not only was Hasek’s flop last night the most pathetic dive since this , but it cost your chicken wings the game. Of course it was against the one team i want to lose more than Detroit right now, but it was still funny
