The greatest reg season game of all time.  Roy says the Wings won the cup that night.  I have the game on DVD and it’s still enjoyable to watch.  Im not sure you could have scripted that one any better.  Cheers to a game that turned the franchise around.

Seeing Igor Larionov with a roughing penalty cracks me up.  smile

If you remember, Igor was the one that started it all off. I think Sandstrom was the only one who didn’t really fight that night.  McCarty had a nice goal in OT to win the game.

dang I would love to see the entire game.  it may be hard to put it in its proper perspective for its time.  the wings with so much potential for years hadn’t won a cup. At that time, after being dominated by the Devils in the finals then not getting to the finals the next year, and being passed in the regular season by the Avs, the window for a shot at the cup seemed to have already closed.  frustration had accumulated so deep it would choke a horse and dominated every red wing player and fan.  this wasn’t just an isolated game, it was the pent up emotion of years of unfulfilled dreams erupting to the surface in a volcano that provided a wave of momentum that resulted in 2 Stanley Cups.  Absolutely EPIC in its historical significance for the Red Wings franchise, not merely a series of fights.

Fun game for Avs fans as well. Lots of Wings got their asses kicked. Watching the Wings go nuts because third-man-in Vernon happened to cut Roy’s forehead when he scratched Roy with his thumbnail is always funny. Watching middleweight “Drunk” Darren McCarty beat on a defenseless lightweight while the crowd roars…also funny. He played right into Lemieux’s game again and again.

Fun game. the score was irrelevant for Avs fans, and the fights were just entertainment.

The score’s always irrelevant to Dive fans Thomas. 6-5, 7-0….

Fun game for dique fans?  I forgot that game was played in Denver. My memory must be fading.

Keep fighting for that 8 spot Tommy Boy. We’re rooting for you, believe me.

It’s funny how the score is always irrelevant to the fans of the team that loses.

You keep selling that, Thomas. Whatever makes you sleep better at night. wink

McCarty beat on a defenseless lightweight

McCarty=210lbs
Lemieux=215lbs

Who was the lightweight???

Millsz, I think Tommy must have been referring to himself. He’s getting his ass kicked…again.

I knew that this feud was reaching the mainstream interest when my buddies and I went to go watch one of the playoff games that year at a sports bar in Davis, CA (by Sacramento) which is NOT hockey country.  A woman walked by our table with her young son, looked up at the TV by us, and said, “Oh, these two teams hate each other.”

On the off chance, she may have been a Northeast or Canadian transplant, but I have feeling she wasn’t.

*sigh*

OK, here we go…

1. The score was meaningless because it’s a meaningless regular season game. The Avs beat the Wings in their last matchup this season. That was a meaningless win, just like the Wings’ win ten years ago was.

2. A player’s actual weight has absolutely nothing to do with whether they are a “heavyweight,” a “middleweight” or a “lightweight,” you *#$%@& moron. It’s a measure of a player’s fighting skill, not their actual weight.

*shakes head*

I am constantly amazed at just how downright stupid Wings fans can be. And I am glad that Avs fans lack the intellect to create a site like this, so I don’t have to be embarrassed to associate myself with them.

3. I’m getting my ass kicked? How so?

The next time I get my ass kicked here will be the *first* time, bud.

As if anyone, other than myself, has added anything of substance to this “debate”. As if a Wings fan could spell his own name without help.

By the way, yes, I want the Avs to get the #8 spot. And I am rooting for the Wings to get the #1 seed over Nashville.

Because this Wings team is as shallow as can be, with shaky goaltending (and that is being generous), and nobody on the roster with any sort of playoff performance history.

The Wings will go out in the first round this year. Whether it’s Calgary or Colorado who does it, the Wings are headed for yet another first round embarrassment.

I can’t wait. I just hope it’s my Avs who do it.

I think Lidstrom has pretty good track record in playofs… did he win a Conn Smythe?

Button!

damn that Thomas is the quintessential Avs fan, totally ignorant on all things hockey.  Only an Avs fan whose team is not going to make the playoffs can pontificate about how bad the Wings are as they teeter one game off the top spot in the NHL.
