Only 48 More Tuesdays Without The Cup…Better Hurry Hoss

The longer this thing with Marian Hossa drags on, the greater the chance that the Hasek may burn to the ground. Angry readers. Frustrated and irritable. Sniping and spitting. I blame myself. I don’t give you guys fodder for conversation and all of a sudden the knives come out.
So we’ll address that because we have to. We must. Break time is over. Ikea sucked.
Hossa. It’s not a secret that I believe our hero Tick Tock Kenny Holland is going to make this happen. I still believe, although not as strongly as I did a few weeks ago, that come 1 July Marian Hossa is going to be a Red Wing for life. I give credit to Holland for this not so much due to his negotiating abilities, but for what he’s helped build. Ken Holland can not budge. He can get creative with term and he can have his cap geniuses working OT to figure out incentives and probably some under the table deals that don’t have to be seen by Gary’s contract nazi’s. But, if Marian Hossa stays it’s not going to be due to the contract he signs, but rather the environment he doesn’t want to leave.
Now the question that’s causing the angst among you. Is keeping Marian Hossa what’s best for the Wings?
I believe it is, but I also think that if he’s allowed to walk...that wouldn’t be the end of the world. If Hossa walks I suppose that means Hudler stays. I believe Samuelsson’s gone regardless because this is his one chance for the big cash. And you know somebody’s gonna pay it. We talk about Hossa going to LA? (And when we discussed it earlier we were talking about the Wings trading his rights, not the player himself. And if those rights are dealt, the player still has the right to negotiate a deal or walk.) Now I could see Samuelsson going to LA. 3 mil/year for three? I just don’t see him staying in Detroit.
Hudler would though. Hossa leaves, Hudler stays. And another UFA to the tune of Laperierre, or Knuble (who says he wants to stay in Philly), or Ellis. Some of you have mentioned Steve Sullivan?
No. I don’t like the guy and never have. I respect that he came back from a huge absence but I believe he’s a dick and don’t want him in red and white. I didn’t just invent that either. Take that how you want.
Laperierre is the guy I’d go after if Hossa leaves. The firepower you lose in watching Hoss go is compensated for by the hunger and feistiness of a guy like Laperierre. Is it an equal trade off?
Well, considering the sobs you’d hear from the Dive bloggers when their hero “Lappy” signs with the enemy? That in itself would be warming. And, listen. If Laperierre does come here? He’s not “Lappy” anymore. That’s for exclamation point users. To us he’ll be something cool like..."Lap Dance.”
Back to reality. Hossa is a top ten talent. In some areas, top five. If you think that losing him and gaining anyone else who’s out there is going to be an even trade? You’re wrong.
And while I understand where people don’t want to break up the Wings, to see them lose as many as 4 forwards? Kopecky and Sammy? See you. We lose them and no one mentions their name after 1 November. We lose Hudler and that stings because he’s a favorite of ours and his teammates.
I don’t understand those who wish, who demand, to see Hossa leave because of his performance in the Final or throughout the playoffs. Do we say the same about Datsyuk? Did we demand his departure after 2006? He was signed for a lot more money than Hossa will be (if he stays) and he’d done nothing in the playoffs up to 2007 when Steve Yzerman stepped in and strongly recommended the Wings get the deal done, which they did of course.
I believe, based on nothing really, that Hossa’s performance as a Wing should not be judged soley on his playoff. I think he was hurt and I also think playing Pittsburgh affected his noggin more than any of us understand. I also think he’ll be starving for a Cup if he returns. If he doesn’t and if he goes anywhere else, and I mean anywhere, he’s not winning a Cup. Because none of the three or four other contenders out there can afford to sign him.
Holland offered him 4/year over ten. As Captain Polonich pointed out, that’s a tremendous pay cut. Huge compared to what he could get elsewhere. But if he does sign with the Wings? He deserves some serious credit for doing so. Just the fact that he’s still deciding says a lot about the guy in my opinion.
Here’s the only thing we know for sure: Ken Holland is going to do the right thing for the Detroit Red Wings. It’s why JJ in Kansas isn’t worried. It’s why we can view this with an almost amused (some would say “bemused”...I don’t use that word) stance; because we know for a fact that whatever happens, Tick Tock is going to guarantee an ELITE team takes the ice in Traverse City. That is a fact and we all know it, with or without Hossa.
So, yeah. I still think Hossa’s gonna sign with Detroit. I think that because I don’t believe he wants to leave and I think that ten-year deal is something he’s always wanted. I think that would be the best thing for the Wings, but not a kick to the sack if he decides to jet. Whatever he decides? We win. We either retain a guy who....blah, blah, blah. I’m frigging tired of talking about this. I just wrote like 19 paragraphs about the same shit we’ve been discussing for a year.
He stays. He goes. Whatever. They’re still the Wings. And they still only have 48 more Tuesdays until the Cup comes home.

Or that nobody’s going to give up anything worthwhile for his rights the day before he’s free.
Wrong answer. Almost every team in the NHL will//would give up something for the right to talk to Hossa no matter how much time exists prior to noon tomorrow.
Your GM is obviously still holding out hope to get a deal done.

That’s what it means to be a Red Wing.
The book What it Means to be a Red Wing goes into into quite a bit of detail regarding the familial atmosphere in the Detroit organization. I just read it, and it is an excellent primer for anyone who wants to start delving into Red Wings history. Black Jack Stewart was one tough SOB.
It’s fascinating to read the coaches’ and players’ explanations for some parts of their career. I also thought it was interesting that the Wings organization in the ‘90s and ‘00s has applied a lot of the same principles they used in the ‘40s and ‘50s. It’s as though the organization was getting back to its proper roots after the dark days of the mid-60s to the mid-80s.

A 34 year old Pronger will make the Flyers blue line even slower that it already was, and that’s saying a lot. Other than Timonnen, they all look like they are skating in quick sand. Brilliant move by Philly giving away two former #1 picks and two future #1 picks for a guy who is not even close to his 2000 self (Hart & Norris trophy). Philly still has many questions in goal, and has to find a way to stop burning out Richards and Carter before the playoffs. The Black Hawks will be better and better prepared for the Dead Wings after experiencing them in the playoffs. Just like the Pens did in 2008-09 after the learning experience of 2007-08. Lidstrom, Holmstom and Osgood are a year older, and they will have a different line-up than in game #7 of the finals. Let’s God Pens!

The Black Hawks will be better and better prepared for the Dead Wings after experiencing them in the playoffs.
Does this apply in only one direction? Does it apply to Philly, Washington and Carolina?
Why didn’t it work for the Ducks, who have ‘experienced them’ the two previous playoffs and three of the last five?
Doesn’t this also mean that the Red Wings are better prepared to face the Penguins next year, that is, unless the better prepared BJs somehow manage to fail to knock off the Wings with that new experience of theirs.

I don’t think the Pronger deal to Philly was a smart move for the Flyers. He just isn’t that effective anymore. And, he is slowing down.
However, all it will take is one solid hit on Sidney, and he is out for seven, eight years. And that is all the Flyers want Pronger for anyways.
So, who knows.
I will be watching every Flyers/Pens game next year in eager anticipation.

I just don’t see the logic of these 10-year deals. I think an offer of something like a four-year deal at 4/6/6/6 would have made way more sense.

Cap hit. 4/6/6/6 works out to 5.5 million per against the cap.
10/10/8/6/4/4/2/2/1/1, on the other hand, is a $48 million deal, but only counts as 4.8 million per against the cap.

I concur.
It’s crazy to think anyone, anywhere, even a hockey guy as smart as Holland, can predict how the wear and tear of 10 years in the NHL is going to affect a player’s performance.
Some guys come through it no problem. Some guys get injured and are able to adjust their style of play or will themselves through it. Some guys take a bad hit, fluky shot, or awkward fall and are never the same. You just can’t say.
I’m not wishing for it, but I think the high physical toll of playing in the NHL is going to burn the Wings on at least one of the long-term deals they currently have in place.
Posted by thethirdcoast from Rottenchester on 06/30/09 at 03:53 PM ET

Fine by me!
I think an offer of something like a four-year deal at 4/6/6/6 would have made way more sense.
Except that has a $5.5M cap hit. If he accepts the $4M cap hit offer it’s already going to mean shedding salary...add another 1.5 on top and it’s even worse for us, depth-wise.
And to monkey, I sincerely hope that’s not anything like the offer they gave him. If he’s earning $10M while Z and Lids are earning $7.x then there is something seriously wrong with Ken Holland.

Of course, there’s always the possibility of a buyout if that comes to pass, thethirdcoast.
This costs (for a player over 26) 2/3 of the remaining contract value, and a percentage still counts towards the cap, over twice the length of the remaining contract. So, in terms of cap space it won’t be that big of a deal, but a little reminder will be there for awhile. The actual money is not really a big issue for the Wings, although the cap is.

The most dangerous player in last year’s win in Game Six over the Pens with 3.2 seconds left was Marian Hossa and he came within TWO tiny inches of tying up the game. Not Crosby. Not Malkin. Not Talbot. Not Gonchar. Hossa.
He’s a playoff performer to me despite not getting any kind of clutch scoring at all in the SCFs this year. If he stays, I’ll leave it to Tick Tock and Uncle Mike to flesh out the remainder of the roster.

Yeah.
A year ago. Which is why Detroit signed him this year.
He wasn’t the most dangerous guy on the ice in any of the seven games of the finals this year.
Which is why I hope they don’t sign him to a long term deal this year.
And if he scores the cup-winning goal against Detroit in June 2010, I’ll stand by my opinion.

Hoss or no Hoss...... We will still be The Detroit Red Wings this coming season. The bar of the collective NHL has been raised high as all hell, thank Mr & Mrs I, Tick Tock, Jimmy D, Jimmy Nill, Hakan the super stud Scout, Scotty Bowman (yes still) & last but not least Stevie Y. Success starts at the top and trickles down to the ice.
Success in the NHL is now based on what this organ-I-zation has done for 20+ years. Bask in the glory, wallow in the sorrow.... we are still the Detroit Red Wings, Bitches and Assholes.
+1 to the recommendation of the book What It Means To Be A Red Wing. I just got it for Fathers Day and am about 1/2 way through… and I can say it’s a good read so far.
If you want to be the man, move on. The Red Wings are about being one of the family.

You’re a joke dude. Where was hoss this year against the pens? where was he all playoffs? 6 goals all scored in just 3 games. weak shit for someone who is supposed to be a pure goal scorer. He was nowhere to be found on the scoresheet against the pens and that’s what matters in the finals. Hoss is a choke artist and a bad decision maker, both have been proven while in a red wings uniform and during game 6 last year, you claimed he was “most dangerous” cause of that weak ass look at the net with mere seconds left on the clock, crosby and/or malkin would have buried it. So say you’re good byes to good ‘ole marion cuz by this time tomorrow he’ll be someone else’s problem. you’re beat

Well, duh...glad you pointed that out, because NOBODY’S articulated that thought here before. Certainly not all the way from last summer when we signed him and started referring to him as a one-year rental. Must be something about the giddiness of a Cup win that renders some people either unable to read or compelled to state the obvious.
So, uh...you Pens trolls enjoying that Cup win? Or not as much as you’d thought, which is why you’re back here already?
