On the heels of Khan(!)‘s report this morning that Pavel Datsyuk is close to re-signing with the Wings comes this little ditty from the Russian online Gazeta.ru.
Team Russia GM Alexei Nemchinov told that Datsyuk and Markov called him and asked him to reserve for them a couple of empty spots in the roster for the World Championship in Moscow.
“If Detroit will lose in the first round, we would like to participate in WC.”
Here’s a translation Wing fans could live with:
“If Detroit will lose in the first round, we would like to participate in free agency.”
As for the ongoing, seemingly warm, negotiations between Kenny Holland and Datsyuk’s agent? Smooth sailing.
Holland was not prepared to declare a deal is close but said he’s had productive talks and planned to have one more discussion with Greenstin in the next couple of days.
“I’m optimistic that we’re going to get something done by the first of July to keep Pavel in a Detroit Red Wings uniform,” Holland said. “My sense is he wants to remain in Detroit. Is there a chance this could go south? Yeah, there’s always a chance.”
“He’s just coming into his prime,” Holland said. “We know we have to make a significant commitment.”
Kenny, do us all a favor and hold that promise of significant commitment over our young Russian’s less than optimistic head. I can’t see the benefit in re-signing Datsyuk before a postseason which will hinge so much on his play.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
