Predicting The Mainstream Is Too Easy

The usual suspects are all chiming in, predicting the Wing demise.  Strachan and Montgomery today.  Proteau and Campbell yesterday.  More will surely follow as we get closer to Game 1.  John Buccigross is today’s only dissenter.

But not by much.

• No. 1 Red Wings vs. No. 8 Flames: I keep going back and forth on this one. Calgary has the experience to win this series. Detroit has some injuries, but the Red Wings are well coached as opposed to the past when the Wings would play into opponents’ hands. Just when I think I’m going to write Calgary in seven, I want to write Red Wings in seven. That’s it. Red Wings in seven.

Al Strachan/Fox

When the intensity gets cranked up in the playoffs, the Wings don’t seem to have the kind of players who respond. Pavel Datsyuk, for instance, has been nothing short of horrible.

The Flames are not a happy group, but often, teams of this nature get together before the postseason and say something along the lines of, “Forget the coach and GM and the rest of the front office. Let’s just play for ourselves.”

If that happens, the Flames will win. Take Calgary.

Ted Montgomery/USA Today

The Wings are the better team — they had 17 more points than the Flames — but everyone knows that means nothing now, especially for the Red Wings. They are banged up (Henrik Zetterberg missed most of the second half of the season, and Hasek, Nicklas Lidstrom and Todd Bertuzzi are nursing injuries), and it will be a tough job to hold down the Flames. This could be an upset in the making

Prediction: Calgary in six games.

Once again, Ted Montgomery’s originality is awe inspiring.  “The Wings are the better team but…”.  Haven’t seen that before Ted.  He really solidifies his credibility with one of his other picks, though:  Nashville in 7 over San Jose.  Chances of that occuring: zero.

I can see how they come to their conclusions though.  The Wings have a history of not responding in the playoffs.  More often than not, they are the better team, but it doesn’t mean anything in the playoffs.

And unfortunately for the Wings, they once again have drawn the team that has been in full playoff mode for a month or more.  And while this Wings team hasn’t actually cruised the last month just awaiting the beginning of the playoffs, they haven’t really been pushed all that much lately either.

So quite honestly, it is not hard to see a first round upset of the Wings, again, when all the familiar pieces are pretty much in place for it to happen.

19 games is “most of the second half of the season”?

These guys are just hedging their bets. If the Flames win, they can say, “See, we were right…” And if the Wings win, they’ll say, “They fulfilled the conditional clauses in my prediction and rose to the challenge…” as they get ready to predict gloom and doom on Detroit for Round 2, with the same conditions.

Why not let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no, mediots? Wings in 5.

It seems to be the hot thing to be against the Wings.  Ah, easy prediction, pick against the Wings!  I want to see how this team responds to the playoffs and how they play.  I think they will beat Calgary and do it in six games, I think they can win at the Saddledome.  I think some players that have been relatively quiet will be the spark (do you hear me Cleary? Draper?).  I have faith in this team.  Though I do agree with other posts made that the first two games are crucial.  A split does not spell the end (except for maybe my hair because I’ll be pulling it out) but Wings must keep the home ice advantage.

No way does Bubba beat the Fish.

Nashville in 7 over San Jose?  on what planet?  Only if Thornton, Cheechoo, Marleau, and both goaltenders contract food poisoning for a week and can’t play.

This series is making me sick.  I could see a sweep either way, or a seven-gamer either way.  AARRGGHH!
