Update at 1538 EST: Holy. Hell. Kyle Quincey is an even bigger biotch than we originally thought. Wow. Denver is the perfect place for him.
“His agent (Pat Morris) has brought it to my attention four or five times, so the fact that he’s disappointed is not a secret to me,” Holland said. “But we’ve won four Cups and a Black Ace has never received a ring. Our policy is you have to be with the club all year, or play a game in the finals. Jon Ericsson was a Black Ace in 2008, so was Jimmy Howard. They didn’t get rings either.
“At the end of the day, right or wrong, to get your name on the Cup and to get a ring is something incredibly special and in order to get it, you have to play as game in the finals, or be with the team all season. If we didn’t have some kind of cut off, we’d be giving out 1,000 rings.”
Four or five times? Jesus dude. Give it up. And tonite? Take your frigging medicine.
Well. Pavel Datsyuk’s sitting. Homer’s healthy. Zetterman’s “responding”.
And Kyle Quincey’s whining like a little Denver bitch after a fake balloon ride.
The Dive are 5-1. Wings are 3-3. I’m sure the Dive bloggers are happy and confident…and that makes me sad. The world is right when that group is feeling down.
Man, I just spent twenty minutes looking at Denver blogs and feel dumber for it. I have nothing to offer you. Nothing. They love the goalie, Anderson. They want the kid, Duchene, to get his first goal against the Wings. A few of them are hyphenated men. A few more won’t be blogging until after yoga class.
As you’re aware, there are some injury issues the Wings are dealing with now. Of most importance? Franzen’s surgery was an alleged success. Bruce MacLeod and the Diggers all gave us the release. Malik found a bit more.
Most NHL players say they need almost a full year to put the lingering effects of that sort of major operation behind them. A best-case scenario would see Franzen return to play the Red Wings’ lineup just after February’s 2010 Winter Olympic break.
Actually, the best-case scenario would be a sentence that goes something like this around the middle of April…
“Ken Holland’s trade deadline move? It came in mid-February when Johan Franzen returned to the lineup. The big horse of a forward has been scoring goals with playoff-like frequency. He’s an amazing specimen.”
Dana Wakiji at the News has a few ditties this morning. Datsyuk felt better yesterday than he did on Thursday. The MRI didn’t reveal anything. He’s happy, practicing, shooting, skating. All the fun stuff. Except, you know, playing in a frigging game.
It was a relief for Datsyuk to see the Red Wings beat the Kings, 5-2, on Thursday, but he was sorry about one thing.
“Our team played well, they scored five goals,” he said. “And I’m happy Nick (Lidstrom) (got) 1,000 points. I’m not happy I’m not in the pictures, but I’m happy he made 1,000 points.”
So, did Datsyuk’s absence contribute to Hank Zetterberg’s decent night? Is this a Fedorov/Yzerman situation where 91 always seemed to play better when The Captain was out of the lineup? I never bought into that and I’m definitely not buying into any similar talk about Datsyuk and Zetterman.
And, no, I don’t think Uncle Mike’s public pep talk had a damn thing to do with the anti-Rosby playing better Thursday. Zetterberg doesn’t think the groin has had much to do with his “slump” either.
“I don’t want to blame that,” Zetterberg said. “I should be good enough in shape that it wouldn’t matter. I think the first two in Sweden were a little tough, but after that I think I’ve been feeling pretty good.”
Tomas Holmstrom appears to be healthy. I know that because all the Diggers are telling me so. He’s also scoring. I know that because most of his goals have occurred before I passed out. He’s also on the fourth line, where he belongs. Where he’s belonged for a while. We talk about the Flying Circus line but when we do we’re really referring to Datsyuk and Zetterberg. Whoever plays with them should score. Hear that Unibomber? Should.
Homer though? He’s not quick enough and typically not healthy enough to take full advantage of it. So now he’s down with Maltby, Draper, Eaves, May, Home Keys or whoever’s getting 4th line minutes. And I can dig that. Throw him out there with the first PP, but keep him down where a mucker belongs the rest of the time.
Seen this yet? Kyle Quincey, according to the always reliable Adrian Dater, is using a unique “snub” for motivation.
“It bothers me a little that I didn’t get a ring. That’s kind of a gray area, and they decided not to give us one. That’s their decision,” Quincey said.
Part of me? Part of me understands that…kinda. But most of me says Quincey should STFU. All of me is a little embarrassed that he actually talked about it out loud. Dude, you played….6 games. 6 regular season games. You registered zero points and 4 penalty minutes.
Quincey seems to believe the Wings owe him an ‘08 ring based on his participation in the ‘06-‘07 playoffs, and we don’t deny he was good. Schneider and Kronwall went down and the kid played well. But he was a non-factor the next season. Those are the facts bitch. No ring for you, and no ring is deserved.
“It just drives me more and more to have an opportunity to get one with this team.”
I’m sure that’s going to happen real soon Kyle. Real soon.
Finally, people are surprised at Denver’s quick start. Some people, anyway. Want to know who isn’t surprised?
Hockey News picked them to finish 14th out of 15 teams in the Western Conference and Sports Illustrated picked them 29th out of 30 overall. Ha!
Not fond of exclamation points, especially when men use them. It just…bothers me. So when I saw that this morning, it made wonder if Stan’s been behind the Dive all along. I’m sure he’s looked at them for some time now and predicted a resurgence this year. That way, when they jumped out to that startling 5-1 start he could pull out the “Ha!” and start tossing it around.
Right?
14 April 2009, Fischler.
By the way, if Patrick Roy is thinking about taking the coaching job—still Tony Granato’s—in Colorado, he ought to think thrice. The Avs are going to be an awful team for a long time.
The Gore’s a tricky place bitch. A tricky place.

We’ll beat Denver just like we did with the Hawks and Kings. Our players seem to like having “young and rising” teams for dinner.
By the way, I love this little piece: The game should be fun. Two good teams. One at the top of the mountain and one that thinks it should be there, too. The most fun comes when the Wings politely push their opponents aside and say, “Not yet.” That is the best statement of all.
Bold guess: Wings 4-1, Helm scores and Quincey mails a -2.

Anderson sure can play and he’s actually a dive goalie I neither hate nor… that other emotion that’s kinda like feeling bad for somebody but not really because they still play for a team of shitbags so it’s not really schadenfreude…. shit, is there a word for that? Derisiompathy? Pitred? I bet Matthew Barnaby knows the word I’m looking for.
Go figure a guy playing for the Dive has something to say about getting a great reward or accolade for playing so relatively few games. He’s sure to have his number retired one day… I wish you weren’t gone, Quincey, but since you are and since you’re running your mouth for the Dive, may you bite on many dicks, yet never feel satisfied.
Have to miss the liveblog tonight too, I expect to read through it later tonight while I can barely keep my eyes open and to be filled with the warmth that is the 19’s hatred for the Dive.

Great post, Chief, and your first of the day. I can’t wait until you get yourself worked up thinking of pompous Dive fans meeting The Organ-I-zation and getting served their first loss this season.
I hope your move out to the West coast doesn’t mellow you out. No nauseating “Let’s all get along” crap and calling us dudes, bitch.
Did J.J. win tickets to the Leafs-Wings “Legends” NHL game, or another game?
Posted by VooX from Behind the Bar in the Hasek Club Car on 10/17/09 at 09:41 AM ET
I’m not sold on the Dive being even a decent team. Their wins have all come from teams that are struggling in the beginning of the season. The collective record of the teams they have beaten is 10-19-2 as of today. Its not an accomplishment to beat the Leafs or Canadiens right now and the Canucks, Sarks, and Bruins are simply overrated. I’m curious to see how they fare against a real team.
Prediction: Wings 5 - 3, Leino with the winner

Wow, et tu Quincey? There must be something in the Denver water that tickles the brain’s rectal regions.
Yea, I don’t buy the Dive being for real. They’re young and stupid and need to have their hearts handed to them on a Garcia.

I just had a “WTF?!” moment. honestly I haven’t been paying much attention to the Wings or hockey in general. Yahoo sends me text message updates on the scores of the Wings games, but that’s about it. thanks to DirecTV being asses to other companies so my cable company doesn’t carry Center Ice any more, and the NHL apparently cracking down on the online feeds…I haven’t watched a single game.
so here’s my moment. I just looked at the standings. I think you all know what I saw that made me literally blurt out “WHAT THE *#$%@&?!”

My feelings exactly. I’m not surprised that the Islanders don’t have a win, yet, but Toronto? I knew they likely weren’t going to be all that good, but fewer wins than the Lions? Insane!

Also the Pacific division is nuts.
Phoenix
Los Angeles
Anaheim
Dallas
San Jose
Best record to worst, or the other way around?

Checking the standings, Baroque, I also notice Denver already lost the first of many games. Too bad the Wings couldn’t be the first.

The best thing about the Quincey story? It was up to his teammates. They voted no. Of course, it probably wasn’t anything specific against Kyle, since I’m sure the vote was “Give the Griffins call-ups who didn’t play rings?,” but still.

I am so absolutely not worried about the Red Wings that it stuns me the way some of the 19 are seemingly close to freaking out. I just don’t understand it. When did we turn into Maple Leafs fans all of a sudden?
Here’s why we should all chill the eff out, okay?

Now, please relax and have a beer and get off the damn Hasek. The staff needs some time to clean it up after the playoffs/free agency before we all climb back on ... jeez.

glad I’m not the only one. has 20 years of watching the Wings win numbed me to it? maybe it’s time for another 20 years slump.
Posted by PaulinMiamiBeach on 10/17/09 at 01:36 PM ET
They could easily fix the Olympics mess if they actually wanted to do something other than bitch and moan impotently about it. It would just take a little intelligence and creativity - heck, I can think of about three different options that would actually likely work, and that isn’t even counting goofball ideas that are off-the-wall from the start!
And I can even show up at the liveblog tonight, because the Dodgers are off until tomorrow. ![]()
Although it sounds like everyone has been a couple cards shorter of a full deck than they usually are, so I’m a little apprehensive about hanging out with the normal crew of reprobates. Ah, well.

Ooh, I thought I was the only one. Usually, I’ve watched tons of games by now and I have watched three Wings games in their entirety. I have to thank DirecTV/Versus for some of that but nothing has caught my interest yet.
I really couldn’t tell you much about the Dive and I live here…
I’m hoping tonight’s game will jump start me into the hockey season.

Matt,
that’s a bunch of BS. There was no payer vote, management decides who gets rings. Kyle was part of the Black Aces group that year in the playoffs and management never gives them rings. So it wasn’t up to the players.

George,
Yeah, I’ve since seen that in the Freep. My mistake to believe anything the Denver Post publishes. But the fact that the team never gives them out to Black Aces makes him an even bigger crybaby than if it’d been a team vote.

Matt,
it all comes down to that Dater is a moron, always has been and always will be.
From what i’ve read, it actually sounds to me like, Kyle was just wondering why they gave him a day to spend with the Cup, but not the ring. Which to some extent I could understand that, why he was surprised.

Ditto here. then I tune for the catastrophe that was the BUF game and didn’t feel much better.
Fortunately the Wings found some semblance of offense against the Kings. But their “D” and P/K still suck badly. Gotta fix that fast, or it could be a really ugly, and long season.
. . . it stuns me the way some of the 19 are seemingly close to freaking out. I just don’t understand it.

I don’t think you should worry all that much about the Colorado record. Who the hockey gods would cause the most pain they first give an early winning record before the catastrophic injuries occur, or something.
A bit surprised about Quincey’s comments. He seems a pretty good kid, just never got a chance with Detroit because of so much depth at the time, did quite well with Los Angeles (although maybe playing with Drew Doughty had something to do with that?), but he never seemed that much of a whiner before. Too bad.
I can’t see him winning a Cup with Colorado, anyway - even if the Avalanche do win one. He isn’t the kind of player that I could see a team keeping for a long time. but more a serviceable defensemen who could be adequately replaced by any number of slightly less experienced and dirt-cheap players, so would get routinely packaged with other pieces in trades. He’ll likely play a few years each with several different teams during his career.
