First a few congratulations are in order. Gramps is back. Grampa Pinhead, who has served as the A2Y logic czar since our inception a few years ago, has brought back his own blog: HockeytownTodd. If you’re familiar with Gramps’ comments at our site, you know he’s traditional, cranky and caustic. Great reading and always a source for stats you won’t find anywhere else.
Secondly, Behind The Jersey has been selected hockey’s tenth best blog by Sports Business Daily. Visit BTJ to see which other hockey bloggers made the cut. I’ll let you know when Cracked comes out with their rankings. I’m sure I’ll be in there somewhere.
Oh, and back to Gramps for a second…
...he was largely correct in saying this yesterday after the Dive were slapped around by the Wing JV squad in Nashville.
Laperriere and the Av’s were spanked pretty good last night by Tootoo & company. My best guess is that the reason a certain Red Wing Blogger hasn’t posted yet today is that he was arrested in his front yard doing a happy dance with his AK-47 right after he heard the news.
It’s an interesting point. Did I dance with an automatic weapon, terrifying my neighbors in our quiet little cove outside the nation’s capitol? No. Does it make me warm every time the Dive lose? Yes. Do I still harbor a great deal of hatred for the franchise? No. I’ve never hated the team, necessarily. I’ve disliked the players, a few of them. Why the bitterness? Because I can’t stand the fans. If you’re a Dive fan, I don’t like you and that’s a character flaw I’m still trying to come to grips with. It is what it is. So, yes, I was happy. I still am.
Just a heads-up: if the playoffs started today, Denver would be in the 9 hole…exactly where they belong and precisely where their “fans” are used to seeing them. Nope. Never too early to grovel in a Dive team on the outside looking in.
Apparently, the puppies are frolicking. Children in greater Detroit are happy. Rainbows followed Red Wing One to Chicago and the team was met by clowns with lollipops and free Shrek 3 DVDs for everyone. That’s right, the reunion is tonight and all the friends are looking forward to tummy rubs and joy.
The friendships he built in Detroit haven’t faded, and Dominik Hasek talked to Lang last week.
“He likes it over there,” Hasek said Friday. “He seemed pretty happy when I talked to him.”
The Enigma is happy. Happy in Chicago where he gets more ice time, less pressure and plenty of opportunities to experiment with different hair styles and figure skating moves. Even Uncle Mike, who clearly despised him with every ounce of marrow in his body, wishes him well.
“He’s going to be a better player for them, just because of ice time,” Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. “We weren’t able to give him the amount of minutes he going to get there, just because of (Pavel) Datsyuk and (Henrik) Zetterberg. His skills will come out there. I guarantee you he’ll play well against us, no question about it. We wish him luck.”
I’m sorry. I was distracted. Kinda glossed over that quote. Let me re-phrase for you. Here’s what Babcock actually said: “He was a lazy piece of garbage for us. He’ll be just as lazy for them. I plan on laughing at him frequently and spraying Tab all over my living room as I skip around in my den watching Blackhawk games on the huge new tv I just bought. I like it. It’s got HD and sometimes I watch Happy Days re-runs on it. Ralph Malph was my favorite.”
Speaking of TV…I looked into the future. I saw myself watching Wing games on NHL Online. I considered a few things. How will I pace and still see the game on my laptop? What happens to that laptop when the Wings lose and I throw it against the bulkhead? Will my patented fist pumps and happy dances after Wing goals still be effective if I view OT goals on the computer instead of the television? I just don’t know. So…switching from the frigging joke of a cable network that is Verizon over to DirectTV. I had to.
Aaron Downey was placed on waivers last night. I guess he’ll stay on the roster if he isn’t claimed. I guess. I also guess he’s GR bound within a month as our Russian friend is brought back up after his little “conditioning stint.” Why place him on waivers now, instead of just before you bring up Grigorenko? I have no idea. Waivers and other administravia just make my head hurt. I get sad and confused. Dave at Gorilla Crouch (nice job on the site re-work tough guy) adds to the speculation.
Detroit has just over $5 million in cap space. So they likely didn’t send Downey down to clear cap space. By waiving him his salary will no longer be factored into the daily salary figure that counts against the cap.
There have been no injuries other than to Grand Rapids defenseman Kyle Quincey. So Downey wouldn’t need to be sent down in order to add a replacement for an injured player. Detroit has filled all of their roster allotments by carrying 14 forwards, 7 defensemen and 2 goaltenders. With Downey being waived there are only 13 forwards on the roster.
No clue. No idea. None. La-la, la-la-la, la-la, bladdy-blah, bladdy-bloo. I just hummed to myself instead of trying to figure this out. Just thought you should know.

Thanks HD. I read that on the official A2Y Blackberry while driving and almost rear-ended a Corolla, which would have been appropriate considering who I’m tied with at 476.

One of the Detroit newspapers claims that the waiver move for Downey was to get him some ice time since he didn’t play much last year, and that now is a good time to send people down since most teams are healthy. Later on in the season, when all the tough guys have fractured each others’ skulls, then Downey won’t clear.

About Abel to Yzerman
Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
