Schneider: Done For Playoffs

Well…if you’re looking for another bit of adversity, another footnote to recall when the Wings raise the Cup in a month or so, this should do nicely.  Mathieu Schneider has played his last game of the 2007 postseason.

MacLeod

Mathieu Schneider suffered a broken wrist in the first period of Saturday’s game and will not play again in the post-season. Either Brett Lebda will return to action or Derek Meech or Jonathan Ericsson—both up from Grand Rapids—will be pressed into duty.
Mike Babcock: “(Lebda) When he’s ready, he’ll play. We have Meech and Ericsson here now. There’s nothing you can do. I kind of expected to have Kronwall, Lebda and Schneider, but that’s just life.”

So…a blueline corps of Lidstrom, Markov, Chelios, Lilja, Quincey and Meech?

No firm word on the return of Lebda, but the urgency is definitely accelerated.  Naturally, there’s been nothing written lately of Niklas Kronwall.

Maybe the pundits will stop talking about how old the Wings are, since they are getting younger with each injury.  Probably not-the needle is stuck firmly in the old familiar groove of that record.

As terrying as it is to lose him against the Sharks on Monday, the full impact of this won’t really be felt unless the Wings advance to face the Ducks.

Damn.

Strange side note…just before Schneids got hit, I was thinking about how Fischer would look in the lineup. Bad omen perhaps.

Rich:  Thanks for the update.  Losing Schneider is a huge loss.  But, maybe, since Sammy discovered he has the ability to put the puck on the net, his game will pick up some of the slack on the PP.  I grant you, that is a huge maybe.

I think the loss of Schneider is huge.  For this series, maybe not but for the next series, OUCH.  I hurled several choice words at the tv last night during the Sens/Devils game when they flashed that he was done for the playoffs.  Schneider plays big minutes and is huge on special teams plus his cannon shot.  I can’t imagine someone else filling that spot.

Of course, this team could prove me wrong.  I’m just a huge pessimist after all.
