It’s 1 September and I’m still floating, providing a steadfast blanket of protection to the coast of Southern California. Expected return to civilization and internet connectivity is in approximately 36 hours. Breakfast this morning with a few visitors to the warship: one from Pittsburgh, one from Chicago. Odd that both of these fans of the Pens and Hawks agree with us re: Rosby and the Hawks chances this season.

Holy fuch, I missed you.

And what’s with the gray on the practice jersey?

Dah! I always suspected that damnable bulter…Very Dunish, when you consider it to be “Butlerian.” That was a war against robots, if I’m not mistaken, which took place long before Dune’s setting.
Anyway, Wings come to Phoennipeg for their [ho]me opener on Oct. 16 (remember Phpg has that trip to Eurasia or whatever) and then again Mar 05, just in time to sharpen your vision of seeing Helm in real life before H2H2, or H-Tizzo-H-Tizzo, as I refer to it.

Agreed on the colours. I’m semi-old school, I guess, so I hate to see anything other than red on white on my Wings skaters.

Howard replaced the purple octopus and clock, the hands of which pointed to the numbers the Red Wings have retired, with the image of Marvel Comics supervillain Doctor Octopus
I liked the clock too, although it should have been melting. In any case, Doctor Octopus is a really good idea. He is, after all, the crazed criminal cyborg version of Al.

Bring back the clock.

You can safely assume that the new practice jerseys will be on store racks and on the NHL store soon because somebody will dig them (I do not).
New helmet for Nick, new Vaughn gear and a Torspo stick for Ozzie.

Aw Miss B look…that thing is getting all classy and even got new teeth for this year…just for you.

Don’t like Miss B, that picture turns you on.
Or is it just hot on my Lair? Or is it just Bert? What the fuch am I even saying anymore?*
*Note: Stoned a bit right now…

I figured Lidstrom had a bigger visor. Jeebus, look at that man. He’s fuching ready to play.
Posted by SYF from the bottom of my, what, 11teenth pint of Guinness? on 09/02/10 at 10:11 PM ET
Nick’s visor is the same size, but the CCM Vector helmet has a much lower profile, so the visor looks lower.
Posted by George Malik from South Lyon, MI on 09/02/10 at 10:23 PM ET
I didn’t even notice the new helmet. Thanks, George.

Frankly the red and grey is a bit too “buckeye” for my tastes.
The speedometer thingie on Jim Howard’s mask was classic…hate to see it go.
Thumbs up on the German beer-wench outfit.
Thus concludes my fashion statement.

Doesn’t Brad Stuart use the same setup George? I thought that was DiscoStu’s picture for a second. Then I noticed the lips weren’t massive..
Posted by Osrt on 09/03/10 at 03:45 AM ET
Stuart uses a slightly shorter visor but yeah, he uses the CCM Vector, so he gets more coverage.
Nick, Rafalski and Maltby (assuming he comes back) all use the old Itech RBE cage, which is a $18 piece of Lexan plastic. No fancy distortion-free optics or any frills…just a 30-year-old design that probably costs $3 to make, protecting $13 million worth of eyeballs.

“Snatch the pebble from my hand, and your training will be complete…”
Jimmy has a pebble in his hand?
Frankly the red and grey is a bit too “buckeye” for my tastes.
This actually works great- Buckeye colors are now just a cheap rip-off of Red Wing practice jerseys.
I am apparently in the minority in that I like the gray on the practice jerseys, although I agree it is possibly a cheap attempt to sell more merchandise. The Wings can’t fiddle with the regular jerseys, and a third jersey is heresy, so they fiddle with the practice jerseys. However, it is also possible there is a more mundane reason for the switch, such as making them more obviously the practice jerseys.
Posted by monkey from lighting my nuts on fire on 09/03/10 at 07:33 AM ET
Or the even more diabolical explanation: it is part of the NHL march to bland sameness across their product line. All NHL practice jerseys have grey trim. Merchandising decision it is.
Posted by monkey from lighting my nuts on fire on 09/03/10 at 07:43 AM ET
I will always think Doctor Octopus is stupid. Bad fashion choice, Jimmy.
All the talk of waitress get-up reminded me that I need to actually go to the Renaissance Festival this year. I keep meaning to and keep forgetting. I still have some of my clothes for it since I worked the Maryland one for a couple years.
I might need to throw together a new blouse and maybe a new underskirt, though. Maybe what I already have will work.
Posted by Baroque from Michigan on 09/03/10 at 07:45 AM ET

Damnit, another tie. We gotta take the gloves off so we can throw something other than paper.

All the boys seem to be really anxious to get going and prove something this year. Love the pics of them on the ice again. And I kinda dig the practice jerseys a little.
NHL channel replayed Game 4 of the squid series last night. Did I need a reminder of how quickly Franzen scored 7 goals? Everything he threw at the net had eyes, and good to remember Bert was in the mix on most of those.
Welcome back, boys.

Whats the over-under on how many times we see this from Homer this year for either “interference” penalty or a goal being called back?

Going to be a slow weekend for hockey….
Here is something for you…
As you may have noticed, a recurring theme with Yzerman’s early deals seems to be defensive responsibility. All of his new recruits appear to have been brought in to help improve the team’s 27th rank in goals against last season. Add the signings of two-way centre Dominic Moore, depth winger Sean Bergenheim and shot-blocking specialist Brett Clark to the mix, and you should get the point.
Nice piece from Hockey Quarterly
And
Steve just added Steve Thomas (Yzerman hires Steve Thomas as a player development consultant)..via twitter.

Combined with distorted player on the other side, we have a perfect picture metaphor for what haunts Bert’s life.

How long before Steve has them in shape to be a contender? Heck they don’t have the talent of Washington or Pittsburgh but don’t be surprised if they are someone’s nemesis this season already.

this kinda makes me sad ...
“Of course, I regret it (not signing with Detroit),’’ Lilja said. “Now that we got here yesterday, got into my house—we’ve been here five years, it feels like home. The kids like it here. I think I was looking for something else, I guess.’’
Posted by stonehands-78 from the beginning ... a WingsFan, on 09/03/10 at 12:28 PM ET
Poor Pylon. Reminds me of a failed relationship I once had. Seems like the very day she finally decided she loved me was also the same day I decided to move on. Just hope Lilja doesn’t turn into some weird psycho stalker bitch. Thanks for the memories Andreas…cue the violin music.

The hiring of Stubby and Beeker may not show improvement immediately, I think it is more for long term building, much like the Wings.
Still, I think Tampa this year may be a thorn in the Caps side.
Perhaps amassing huge point totals to lead the league just because you are in the Southeast Div. has come to an end. Improvements and new coaching in Atlanta should add to the Caps regular season descent. .

It’s posts like this that make it hard to read this blog at work. I imagine my last day of work will go something like this:
coworker: Are you alright? What are you laughing at?
me: Oh, nothing. Just a…..cost estimate, yeah, that’s it.
coworker: This cost estimate has you choking on laughter? I have to see this…
me: umm no..I was just…I mean…umm…look, someone brought in donuts today!
coworker: you know I am a diabetic….what were you really looking at?
me: ummm..porn
coworker: you’re fired

I sure hope so. I hate Bruce Boudrieu as much as you like Hitch and Trotz. I still can’t believe he won Coach of the year when Babs was in the running. Whatever.
