Sign It In Montreal

I think it would be nifty if Tick Tock Kenny Holland decided to call a press conference in Montreal this weekend and announce that Henrik Zetterberg had just signed a ten-year contract extension with the Wings, for about three million less than he could have made per season if he’d gone the free agent route this summer.
Zetterberg and his agent and Tick Tock could all say a few words about the importance of team and personal sacrifice for the sake of The Dynasty.
And Emma could be there. With Jimmy D and maybe a circus clown on loan from Little Gary. But just for a few minutes before he has to get back and officiate the skills competition.
The reigning Conn Smythe winner could sign the deal in Montreal, then leave. No reason to stay because one of the best players in the game, top 5, probably top 3 if you ask the players themselves, wasn’t voted into the ASG and he definitely wasn’t going to be invited by The League.
That’s ok. Hank and Emma could fly back to Michigan, land at Tri-Cities and head to the Christmas Store in Frankenmuth. Open 364 days per year bitches.
And the Deep Diggers could go too. Ansar said so.
Holland declined to reveal details about the deal, but a person familiar with the talks said last week that Zetterberg will sign a 10-year contract worth more than $70 million. Zetterberg’s Swedish agent, Gunnar Svensson, told Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet that his client might sign a 10-year pact worth slightly more than $7.1 million a season.
Yep. Read it yesterday Ansar. Thanks. Actually, we knew about this last week as soon as the denials from Hank hit the wire, the ones where he said he never turned down a 75 million dollar deal. ‘Member? Hank said he hadn’t received, officially, such a deal but man that would be cool.
And here we are. When? Soon. How soon? Again, I’m saying before the weekend is out.
And where does that leave the Wings and Tick Tock’s plans to glue together a roster that somewhat resembles the team he has together now?
Well, Khan(!) says the Wings could only spend 6.2 million more against next year’s Cap before 1 July.
He has had some discussions with the agent for forward Johan Franzen, who will be unrestricted on July 1. Forwards Marian Hossa, Mikael Samuelsson and Tomas Kopecky and goaltender Ty Conklin also will be unrestricted. Forward Jiri Hudler can become a restricted free agent.
“I’ll talk to the other camps and then talk to our people,’’ Holland said. “I might like one player at a certain number better than another player at a certain number, and I’ll do that.’‘
Dave Waddell, a guy we don’t give enough time to around here, sheds a bit more light for you.
“We’re probably in a position with tagging space [expiring contracts] where we could sign Zetterberg and one more player then we’re done until July 1,” Holland said. “We can’t just sign Hossa, Franzen and Zetterberg before then.”
The Wings would also be able to go over the cap by 7.5% during the off-season allowing them time to shed salary before they must become cap compliant again to open the next season.
Hmmm. One player at a certain number, before 1 July, with only around 6 to spend?
Franzen at 5.5 perhaps?
Hey Tick Tock? Good job with Hank. We know it’s done. Next?

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
