So…Maltby Might Play On Friday, Retire On Monday

Yep.

Khan(!)

Reading between the lines, it appears Maltby is leaning toward retirement.

In the meantime, Holland confirmed that Maltby will play in Friday’s season opener against Anaheim if Todd Bertuzzi (back) can’t play. Holland, however, believes Bertuzzi will play.

“I know which way (Maltby) is leaning. I told him to take the weekend and make his final decision on Monday,’’ Holland said.

“If Bert wakes up tomorrow and feels as good as he does today, Bert’s going to play. I think we’re going to have Bertuzzi in the lineup, but certainly if we need a call-up Maltby’s a call-up.’’

If Bertuzzi can’t play, it might end up being sort of a farewell game for Maltby.

Did those of you attending the opener Friday catch that?  If Maltby’s in there, we could be looking at an opportunity to bid him a proper farewell.  And credit to Khan(!) for staying on this today.  We rip you when you deserve it big boy, but you’ve done well today.

Stick it out Kirk! You never know how the season can change and it looks like the Red Wings have a great team this year. Even spot injury call-ups and possible play-off time is worth a final season.

If they know that he is leaning towards retirement than why not let him play friday if its going to be his last game!?

I can see it now.

Bertuzzi calls in sick, Maltby plays Friday, and the fans show him their appreciation for -x-many years of service.

He then rides off into the sunset with his head held high.

I’m all for that and it’s cool and all, but at what point do we run out of positions for all these former players?

The cap’s been very good to the Wings organ-I-zation in several ways.  They can make positions available.  Chelios, Downey, and now, Maltby all have a chance to contribute in other ways to the Wings.

You don’t run out of positions - these former players are promoted through the ranks in the Red Wings organization and one by one they move on to other teams (ex. Tampa) - until one day several years down the road, there are enough of these ex-Wings in positions of power around the league that Kenny can just make a few calls to effect some change within the NHL - example: Remove Bettman, bring the Red Wings over to the Eastern Conference, etc.

It’s all part of Kenny’s long term plan!

If this is the case, and Bertuzzi is aware of it*, then I sort of hope he milks this back injury thing through the weekend at least.

*You never know how “aware” he really is. He still thinks “Jiri Hudler” is a European delicacy slow roasted over an open fire.

I think you’re making a joke, right?  About how Bertuzzi has human feelings and emotions and understands what it might mean for a teammate to retire on a good note?

Or are we talking about a different strain of Toddberculosis here?

You can never have too many scouts, right? Plus, it’s not like the Wings are the Hawks… where management cannot possibly get the team out of the red, even when the fans do bother to show up.

Also, how would this work? Malts cleared waivers, right? So he’s not on the 23-man roster. So would Bert have to go on LTIR in order to fit Maltby in? In that case, wouldn’t that mean Bert wouldn’t be able to play for more than just the one game? Color me confused.

It’s October, bitches.

It would be a nice way to say goodbye for both Kirk & the Fans if he were to suit up for the opener.

Maybe if they have some sort of cerimonial face-off before the game ( first game of the season sort of thing) Kirk could take the draw and get a nice ovation.

Either way, he has been a tough son of a gun and a great team player for all these many years.

  Good Luck Kirk.

If Bertuzzi can’t play, it might end up being sort of a farewell game for Maltby.

if Maltby plays, and knows it’s his last game before he retires, Holy Hell he is going to be on fire out there.  Babcock should play him just for the farewell emotional aspect of it.  can you imagine the kind of game Maltby will have?  he will leave it ALL on the ice.  ALL of it.  gives me goosebumps thinking about it.
