Something Cooking In Hossa Camp?

We’ve all seen how contract negotiations go in Tick Tock’s world.  The order of things has become almost standard by now.  A little chatter…followed by a period of silence…then a few surprise quotes from an agent or the player himself…a few hints dropped to an eager Digger.  Then all of a sudden a Wing press conference is called and the next thing you know old Jed’s a millionaire in red and white for 8 years at 6.5 mil/per.

And here we go.  Hossa’s talking and he’s not being too subtle about it.

St. James

“To be able to stay as a Red Wing, I am prepared to take less money, but a fair deal, so both sides are happy. That’s what I’m looking for. I know if I go somewhere else, I could have more, but I’m willing to take less to stay here. Hopefully things work out.”

“I could be somewhere else, you know, but I came here because I like everything and I want to be a part of it,” Hossa said. “And that’s why I want to still be a Red Wing and stay here.”

Dave Dye’s got a little on it too and expands the discussion a bit.

Detroit News

The real difference is the salaries. Datsyuk’s cap hit next season is $6.7 million and Zetterberg’s is around $6.1 million.

Crosby and Malkin will be at $8.7 million each next season.

That leaves the two Wings’ stars with $12.8 million combined cap hits to $17.4 million for the Penguins’ duo.

Crosby and Malkin are considerably younger.  Datsyuk and Zetterberg are better at both ends of the ice.

Comparing their value to their teams is a conversation ripe for bias…until you look at the money.  In today’s NHL, what GM would rather have Crosby and Malkin for more than 17 million per season over our guys for less than 13?

Table that answer.  Delay it until July.  If Hossa signs, Franzen signs and Hudler stays?  Then tell me which pair of superstars is more valuable, and take into consideration which pair took a lot less to stay where they are.

One part of the cap equation we haven’t discussed is goalies.

Howard is due 750K for next year and 800K for 2010-2011. Ozzie is due 1.45 mil next year and 1.1 mil for 2010-2011. Conk is an UFA after this season. Has Howard proven to anyone inside or outside the Organ I zation that he can be an NHL goalie? Didn’t think so. Trade him or buy him out.

Kenny has 9.4 mil to work with, assuming the cap remains the same and no players are bought out. The Wings have 47.3 mil committed to 15 players for next season.

I don’t think you can really understand this until you’ve had a split nationality/family an ocean apart as a part of your life.

Well then, put me in the pigeonhole that understands.  And though I can’t speak for Swedes, from an American expat standpoint it cuts both ways.  Some days all you want is to sit down to a steak & a beer and junk talk about Denny’s and Gilligan’s Island, and other days you’re five seconds and one feckin’ eejit in a sunhat with a backpack and a nasal bray going, “Whaddaya mean you don’t take REAL money?” away from buying a one-way ticket to Greenland.

But I do find it a bit off-center that all of our Swedes live in Novi’s ‘Little Sweden’ except for Z and his pad in Birmingham.  I mean, hell, if I had the choice, I’d take B’ham over Novi too, but maybe this is another one of those aspects of Z where he values his anonymity because he and Emma are the Swedish Posh & Becks.

I mentioned the underpaid years only as a reference point as others were.  But I only can go on past negotiations here, and Zetterberg’s were pretty smooth and pain-free.  The same cannot be said for Franzen’s.

Enough of this Crap.

Uh oh, Gramps is cranky…

What’s up, HTT?  Somebody drink the last of your Bushmills?

I think Z has said that when he first joined the team, most of the young players lived in Birmingham and Royal Oak so that’s why he lived there. The other Swedes ended up in Novi because Homer and Nick were there.

(Why the frack I happen to know that, when I don’t even know some of the names of my coworkers, is beyond me.)

Nah, the Irish is restocked weekly.

But I have allocated the last of the single malt to my neighbors
birthday just before the Edmonton game.

What works against Franzen in perception is his quiet nature.  He hasn’t said anything about what he wants to do, or how he feels about staying in Detroit, or if he feels underpaid, so fans assume the worst - that he is a typical mercenary athlete who is just waiting for the big payday to come along to jump to another team and whimper about how if they really, really cared about him, they would have offered him more money.  Whereas Hossa has said all the right things which, even if it is at the prompting of his agent, dispose the puplic opinion more favorably toward him.

I’d hate to lose either, but wish them luck if either goes to another team, against all opponents but the Red Wings.  smile

Well, do you give 2 $hits about coworkers in general?
As one of the 19, it’s all things Wings and all. You have your priorities in line, no worries.

Sounds like a good pregame plan HTT. Single malt and then a Wings beat down of the Oil.
Lastly, Cap’n Dennis. I like the new avatar.

The way I see it, Hossa is a franchise player. Franzen is not.  Hossa routinely creates for himself. Franzen is more about putting home what others create for him. The thought that we could end up with 3 franchise players plus an aged one in still franchise form with Lidstrom is just astounding.

Love em both, but Hossa being the more likely sign is looking in the right direction.

Calquake made an insightful comment about Sammy in our post-poultry-party too. He mentioned that a few years ago it was Lids and Homer and Z(?) who were pushing to get Sammy cause he’s a good player and a great team guy. Losing Sammy may cause a bit of dissent, or at least sadness, among the Swedish contingent.

Its an interesting point that Calquake can probably explain better. And I know chemistry is a bit overrated and winning breeds team chemistry. But is it possible that if we lost certain players it would take the wind out of the sails of the dressing room?

Again, I sit in absolute amazement of the 19, and your analytical prowess.

I’m a lazy man. Thinking about salary caps makes my head hurt, and all the ginormous roster possibilities going forward makes me not want to get out of bed for days. You guys (and gals) do all the thinking for me. I read it all, and came to this conclusion-

It is GOOD to be a fan of the Detroit Red Wings. Our “problems” are the envy of the league.
It is GOOD to have Ken Holland as our GM. Brian Burke wouldn’t make a pimple on his ass.

That is all I need to know, and all I need to think aboot is how much I am going to drink on a work night with a West Coast road trip.

I don’t understand the criticism of Homer. PP or even strength, the man does what no one else in the league does (at least not nearly as effective as he does). He skates no slower (or faster) than he did ten years ago (really, how could he skate any slower).

I bolded exactly why I say he’s a liability on the first and second line.  he should be on the third line on this team.  it’s too easy for other teams to cover Z/Dats or Hoss/Mule when he’s on the ice with them, because he just stands there in front of the net.  I think Cleary is a better option with either tandem.

no, I don’t think Holmstrom is a third line player in the classic sense of the phrase “third line” but consider that we have to first line really, so our third line is our second line…etc etc

I don’t understand this at all.  he has completely proven it to me.  his stats are better than Osgood’s, by the way.

Only the organization knows - or will after they give him an extended time as backup or something.  I have absolutely no clue.

I’m glad they didn’t rush him and wreck him like Montreal may have done with Carey Price, though.

His stats are minor league, as well as his ability. Otherwise he would be in Detroit.

Lets Go Red Wings!!!!!
