Sunday Issues: Draper, Belts, Scumbags And Hossa

Interesting.  Can anyone recall a single time Kris Draper’s said anything to the media that could be construed as controversial or critical of another player?  Even after his face was ravaged by one of the more cowardly hits in NHL history, Draper said little to nothing.

Draper, who’s never shirked his responsibilities after Wing losses, who’s never said an ill thing about an opponent, who’s respected league wide…is now just making stuff up. Right?

“Nick was waiting and waiting, and Crosby didn’t come over to shake his hand” in the traditional handshake line. He added that, “that’s ridiculous, especially as their captain, and make sure you write that I said that.”

Pens fans, and we’ll get to them soon, like to point out that Gary’s Baby Boy was being interviewed, distracted, roadblocked from leading his team through the handshake line.  Got it.

Post Gazette

“There’s nobody who respects the traditions of hockey more than Sidney Crosby. It was a young team celebrating its first Cup and some of the guys might have been a little late getting into the handshake line.”

That’s the Pens VP of comms.  “Some of the guys…”  Really?  One of the guys, actually.  The rest of “the guys” were looking behind them, wondering where their “captain” was.

Rosby’s a joke of a captain and we all know it, have known it.  We saw it as neutral observers then became more aware of it during last year’s Final.  We saw him refuse to give Hank Zetterberg credit for stifling him, for his play on the 5-3..but that was after he chased him across the ice squealing at him.  Then we saw the real Crosby after Games 1 and 2 this year, playing the bitch role to perfection again.

Bitter the Wings lost?  Sure.  Bitter that they lost to Maxime Talbot? No. He owns the Wings and I’ll have nightmares about him for months.  To Dan Bylsma? Definitely not.  Hell, when Mike Babcock moves on in five or six years, and he will because that’s the nature of the business, we’ll take Bylsma.  No problem. Michigan boy. Class act.

But Crosby?  If he’s been looking forward to this his entire life, as the Pens organization is now saying, to include Mario Lemieux…if he’s so in tune with the “traditions of hockey”...how does that happen?  How does little Thid the boy captain not get his ass to the front of that line?

Got a couple emails this morning.  Here’s one from a Pens fan and I won’t put the whole thing here….just a few sentences to give you a feel for the tone.

How sweet it really is to shove this right back in your face for being a disrespectful writer whinning about everything possible and being the cockiest fanbase in the NHL. I hope the sight of crosby skating with the cup is printed in your mind forever and i hope you have a HORRIBLE day sobbing and crying over this.

That’s from Kevin, an A2Y fan.  Kevin, instead of celebrating his team’s Stanley Cup, chose to write a heartfelt email to yours truly and whine for four paragraphs about how “disrespected” he felt as a Pens fan that I didn’t give his team the necessary credit for their victory.

Also got an email from the PensBlog guys today, asking where their Blogger’s Championship Belt is.

image

There you go boys. Congratulations.

And here’s something else…we’ve received some decent comments from good Pens fans here the last few days, a good number of them in fact.  Good people and good fans who have come here to congratulate the Wings, Wing fans, the organ-I-zation, for a great Final and a great series.  Thanks.

And then there have been many more who said things like this…

“What a joke of a town that is nothing but a pariah to the US. Can we vote to exclude them and their worthless beings from the U.S.. Get a f*cking job and stop asking for handouts and bailouts you f*cking losers.

Posted by Pensssss on 06/13/09 at 03:52 AM ET”

And that’s tame. But it’s one of literally hundreds since the Final began.  Hundreds of comments almost identical to that.

I have exactly zero doubt where that “fan” came from or which blog he’s a product of.  And because I’m certain of that I can say this: I’d be humiliated if any of you had gone over there to say things like that after the Wings won last year.  It would be an embarrassment and an indictment of us all.  The Pens “fans” who have come here spewing that or something like it are the definition of scum.  The very definition of it.

Going after the team and me for the way I write is one thing, and it’s expected.  But to those PensBlog readers who have come here before, during and after the Final to use it as a means to rub Michigan’s economic tragedy in the faces of those who have been devastated….you are despicable.  And if the PensBlog operators are aware of it and not doing something about it, you’re no better and that’s a fact.

But, thankfully, there is humor to be found here.  Humor in the fact that the tone is shifting from the disgusting to the bizarre. In the span of the last fifteen or sixteen hours the Pens “fans” are now coming here to whine that we haven’t given them the necessary “credit.”  One ended their comment with this, “We have a damn good team.”  Awww.  We know you do.  You won the Cup didn’t you?

You could almost hear the sobs.  It’s been less than 48 hours since their team won the Cup and here they are…whining because I haven’t written something like, “the Wings lost to the better team.”  That will never be written here.  Ever.  Not about this series.  Injuries and officiating.  Injuries and officiating.  Those who have been here long enough recognize that and who said it first.

Hossa.  I believe he’s staying because he’s said he’d take less to do so.  He’s a character guy, despite the wire brushing he’s taking here and will all summer.  And he’s completely embarrassed right now.

No. I don’t know how Tick Tock is going to make it happen, but I believe he will.  And I’ll say this, I don’t have to analyze numbers or charts. I don’t have to because I never have. I’m going on gut and if you guys want to crunch numbers go ahead.

I believe Sammy is gone and wouldn’t be surprised if Hudler was too.  I also think Kirk Maltby is gone, bought out if possible.  One way or another Ken Holland is going to keep Marian Hossa in the fold and it’s going to be around 5 million/year for at least 7…if not 7 on the dot.

Holland will keep him because Hossa is a character guy and it will give the Wings a group of forwards unmatched by any team in the league, a mixture of speed, talent, grit and firepower no one can touch. Ken Holland is not going to keep Hudler and Samuelsson if it means re-signing one of the top ten forwards in the world for five million or less/year.

Hossa’s staying.  And he’s going to be a madman next year.  He’s going to be Verlander.

any thoughts

Sure.  He’s a damn good player stuck in an unsuitable role on his team.  Any place else, he’s a legit first-line center, but stuck behind Crosby and Malkin, he’s forced into a checking role.  I suspect he’ll be out of there as soon as UFA status comes along uless he’s given a bigger role with the team.

(Really, I’m from Wyandotte.)

I’ve had that Downriver pizza.  You cannot claim that it’s much good, though never having had pizza in Atlanta, I’ll make you that concession.  And the young ladies serving it in Wyandotte and Trenton and Grosse Ile (whose fine establishments obviously don’t pay them enough to afford much fabric for their clothing) certainly make it taste somewhat better.  wink

You may be confusing the applause for a good check with applause for an injury.

Todd, I’d agree if it ended with the applause, but that argument lost credibility when the fans followed up the applause with a “Crosby sucks” chant immediately afterward, while he was limping off and being attended to by trainers on the bench.

Now if this was Philly, they could make the argument that that was a standard chant used throughout the course of the game, but to my knowledge, this was completely out of character for Detroit because Wings fans don’t normally resort to those lame chants, they have better things to do like, you know, root for their own team.

Oops -

I meant BEHIND a couple of other centers - no one makes a line with three centers on it (I don’t think).

Regardless, I think Pittsburgh will keep Staal - and they should (salary permitting).  He’s a very good young player and they would be a worse team without him unless they really made out well in a trade.

I am here to ask the opinion of the 19 on Jordan Staal . over the course of this season there were Chants of Trade Staal (not from me ) which I really think were unfair the kid is only 20 yrs old and his size he has the makings to be one of the best defensive forwards in the game ?

Go ahead and trade him.
Detroit will be happy to take him off your hands.
The number he did on Homer was outstanding.
The minute you forget he is out there, he will bite you in the butt.
I commented accordingly before the series even began.

Chants of Trade Staal

....?
Ignore them, we have a lot of fans here in Detroit that know very little about hockey, also.

And to the comments about losing the finals not stinging as much ...

For me it is far more disappointing, obviously - but different in that the loss was understandable, given the injuries and whatnot.  After some of the regular season losses there was a lot of headscratching about why the goaltending was so strange or what the heck everyone was thinking.  It stings to think a team might be getting complacent - not so much when they just emptied the tank and ran out of gas.

One more thing about Staal—I’m not convinced he’s happy playing where he is.  There were rumors before, and there are still rumblings, that he wants a prominent role elsewhere.  I don’t think they’ll go away now that he’s won a Cup.

“Please A2Y regulars…tell me you don’t actually claim this zitt-faced teenager as one of your own!”

to…

I don’t know that Staal’s role is all that unsuitable.  When he was drafted, he wasn’t known as a top-level offensive player like his brother Eric was.  I believe he never scored more than 28 goals in juniors, so when he scored 29 his rookie year that was a huge (but obviously pleasant) shock to everyone in the Pens organization.  He is developing into a top-notch defensive forward, and probably a Selke candidate in the future (Assuming, of course that Datsyuk and Zetterberg ever get out of the league.), and with the time he spends on the PK, he’s getting a good 18-20 minutes a game.

I also don’t think he’s yet a legit first-line center because his passing skills still need to be improved.  When he scored on that 2-on-1 in game 6, I think he was even quoted as saying he knew he was going to shoot because he’s not a passer.  I would say at this point that he’s 2nd line material.

As far as his UFA status, fortunately he’s under contract for 4 more years.  Things should get very interesting around that time in Pittsburgh because Staal’s and Crosby’s contracts expire at the same time, and Malkin’s expires a year later.  As much as I’d like the Pens to keep them all, realistically there will have to be some movement.  But that’s a worry for another time.  I’m just going to enjoy the next few years and hope we can stay at or near the top of the mountain the way the Wings have been doing for so long.

According to NHL numbers.com, Malkin goes from 984,000 this year to 9 million next year. That is 18 million for two players (Crosby/Malkin).

Detroit has 19 million tied up in Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Filpulla, and Cleary.

As far as GM’s go, advantage Detroit.

So you are not upset that the Wings lost the cup?

So you are not upset that the Wings lost 4 out of the last 5 games of the finals?

So you are not upset that Hossa played like shit?

So you are not upset that Babcock in all of his greatness could not figure out a game plan going into the 3rd period to win a game 7 against a penguins team without Crosby?

So you are not upset that the Wings had nearly twice as many powerplays but only converted on 4 of them (same as pens)

So you are not upset that after you and 18 other wing message board fans creatively inserted an (i) between the name pens to spell penis on nearly every post that it did not have the voodoo effect of causing the penguins to lose in the finals?

So you are not upset that your fan base represented themselves like great sports after the 1.) Crosby was injured, 2.) The penguins were presented the Cup, 3.) Bettman went to center ice.

So you are not upset that Hossa played like shit (7.4 million for what?) —I know i already mentioned this, but it is extra surprsing that this is not your main point of anger.

So you are not upset that the Wings were unable to pinch off that dingleberry in game 7, at home, after leading the series 2-0.

So you are not upset that after the 5-0 blowout that so many were so quick to point out was Detroit playing so good and not the penguins playing so bad.

NO NO!

You are upset that :
1.  The penguins chose Crosby to be their captain? (2 years ago)
2.  The penguins captain did not shake the hand of the red wings captain?

Surround yourself with like-minded people who are enjoying the moment a little more than obviously you are. Drown yourself in pro-Pens propaganda on friendly sites. Soak up all the parade has to offer. Do it. Because it is fleeting. Soon enough you’ll have to defend Stanley.

And it’s a whole different ballgame when you have a target on your back.

The whole organization feels disrespected by Bettman and the NHL. They need to get over it. Babcock even said at one of his press conferences (joking of course) that he wasn’t sure if they won the Cup last year because of all the promotion of Crosby and the Penguins on the NHL Network.  Hockeytown needs to come to the realization that they were BEAT and are not the Stanley Cup Champions anymore. “Elvis has left the building”

There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.

Reading comprehension, penstrolls.

Look into it.

Now kindly piss off.

Thanks Chief. Yesterday was hard. I didn’t want to hear anything about hockey- yet I couldn’t turn off 97.1 and found myself consistently refreshing A2Y. Today is a new day though.

My thoughts on the Penguins winning the cup as a whole? Some deserve it, but I would liken it to when the fat kid gets congratulated for being able to do a pull-up in gym class, even though his teacher (Gary Bettman) was holding his legs up.

if you guys had a superstar on the caliber that crosby is

Oooh yeah, big superstar, nice 3 points in 7 games of the Finals.  Real big contributor there.  I wouldn’t trade Helm for Crosby even if they made the same amount of money.

But for some reason his ‘fans’ have stayed.

You seem quite anxious to get rid of us.  Are those mean old Pens fans making you upset and irate?

Poor wittle Wings fans…..

Instead of trading barbs, how about some serious hockey conversation?
