Interesting. Can anyone recall a single time Kris Draper’s said anything to the media that could be construed as controversial or critical of another player? Even after his face was ravaged by one of the more cowardly hits in NHL history, Draper said little to nothing.
Draper, who’s never shirked his responsibilities after Wing losses, who’s never said an ill thing about an opponent, who’s respected league wide…is now just making stuff up. Right?
“Nick was waiting and waiting, and Crosby didn’t come over to shake his hand” in the traditional handshake line. He added that, “that’s ridiculous, especially as their captain, and make sure you write that I said that.”
Pens fans, and we’ll get to them soon, like to point out that Gary’s Baby Boy was being interviewed, distracted, roadblocked from leading his team through the handshake line. Got it.
“There’s nobody who respects the traditions of hockey more than Sidney Crosby. It was a young team celebrating its first Cup and some of the guys might have been a little late getting into the handshake line.”
That’s the Pens VP of comms. “Some of the guys…” Really? One of the guys, actually. The rest of “the guys” were looking behind them, wondering where their “captain” was.
Rosby’s a joke of a captain and we all know it, have known it. We saw it as neutral observers then became more aware of it during last year’s Final. We saw him refuse to give Hank Zetterberg credit for stifling him, for his play on the 5-3..but that was after he chased him across the ice squealing at him. Then we saw the real Crosby after Games 1 and 2 this year, playing the bitch role to perfection again.
Bitter the Wings lost? Sure. Bitter that they lost to Maxime Talbot? No. He owns the Wings and I’ll have nightmares about him for months. To Dan Bylsma? Definitely not. Hell, when Mike Babcock moves on in five or six years, and he will because that’s the nature of the business, we’ll take Bylsma. No problem. Michigan boy. Class act.
But Crosby? If he’s been looking forward to this his entire life, as the Pens organization is now saying, to include Mario Lemieux…if he’s so in tune with the “traditions of hockey”...how does that happen? How does little Thid the boy captain not get his ass to the front of that line?
Got a couple emails this morning. Here’s one from a Pens fan and I won’t put the whole thing here….just a few sentences to give you a feel for the tone.
How sweet it really is to shove this right back in your face for being a disrespectful writer whinning about everything possible and being the cockiest fanbase in the NHL. I hope the sight of crosby skating with the cup is printed in your mind forever and i hope you have a HORRIBLE day sobbing and crying over this.
That’s from Kevin, an A2Y fan. Kevin, instead of celebrating his team’s Stanley Cup, chose to write a heartfelt email to yours truly and whine for four paragraphs about how “disrespected” he felt as a Pens fan that I didn’t give his team the necessary credit for their victory.
Also got an email from the PensBlog guys today, asking where their Blogger’s Championship Belt is.
![]()
There you go boys. Congratulations.
And here’s something else…we’ve received some decent comments from good Pens fans here the last few days, a good number of them in fact. Good people and good fans who have come here to congratulate the Wings, Wing fans, the organ-I-zation, for a great Final and a great series. Thanks.
And then there have been many more who said things like this…
“What a joke of a town that is nothing but a pariah to the US. Can we vote to exclude them and their worthless beings from the U.S.. Get a f*cking job and stop asking for handouts and bailouts you f*cking losers.
Posted by Pensssss on 06/13/09 at 03:52 AM ET”
And that’s tame. But it’s one of literally hundreds since the Final began. Hundreds of comments almost identical to that.
I have exactly zero doubt where that “fan” came from or which blog he’s a product of. And because I’m certain of that I can say this: I’d be humiliated if any of you had gone over there to say things like that after the Wings won last year. It would be an embarrassment and an indictment of us all. The Pens “fans” who have come here spewing that or something like it are the definition of scum. The very definition of it.
Going after the team and me for the way I write is one thing, and it’s expected. But to those PensBlog readers who have come here before, during and after the Final to use it as a means to rub Michigan’s economic tragedy in the faces of those who have been devastated….you are despicable. And if the PensBlog operators are aware of it and not doing something about it, you’re no better and that’s a fact.
But, thankfully, there is humor to be found here. Humor in the fact that the tone is shifting from the disgusting to the bizarre. In the span of the last fifteen or sixteen hours the Pens “fans” are now coming here to whine that we haven’t given them the necessary “credit.” One ended their comment with this, “We have a damn good team.” Awww. We know you do. You won the Cup didn’t you?
You could almost hear the sobs. It’s been less than 48 hours since their team won the Cup and here they are…whining because I haven’t written something like, “the Wings lost to the better team.” That will never be written here. Ever. Not about this series. Injuries and officiating. Injuries and officiating. Those who have been here long enough recognize that and who said it first.
Hossa. I believe he’s staying because he’s said he’d take less to do so. He’s a character guy, despite the wire brushing he’s taking here and will all summer. And he’s completely embarrassed right now.
No. I don’t know how Tick Tock is going to make it happen, but I believe he will. And I’ll say this, I don’t have to analyze numbers or charts. I don’t have to because I never have. I’m going on gut and if you guys want to crunch numbers go ahead.
I believe Sammy is gone and wouldn’t be surprised if Hudler was too. I also think Kirk Maltby is gone, bought out if possible. One way or another Ken Holland is going to keep Marian Hossa in the fold and it’s going to be around 5 million/year for at least 7…if not 7 on the dot.
Holland will keep him because Hossa is a character guy and it will give the Wings a group of forwards unmatched by any team in the league, a mixture of speed, talent, grit and firepower no one can touch. Ken Holland is not going to keep Hudler and Samuelsson if it means re-signing one of the top ten forwards in the world for five million or less/year.
Hossa’s staying. And he’s going to be a madman next year. He’s going to be Verlander.

pensfangirl,
And I’m sure you’d have had the guts to come here and tell us that had the Wings won. If you think somehow you’re Lot from the city of Sodom, while you’re living there in Detroit, you’ve got quite the victim complex. Poor baby. Why don’t you go live somewhere else? Pardon me if I don’t cry for you Argentina.
And by the way, if you do happen to move, don’t move to Kentucky. I don’t care to happen upon you as my neighbor.

And to anyone who would call HockeyTownTodd “HockeyTown Retodd”… know and understand that he watches more hockey in one season than you ever will in your lifetime, and may understand the game about as well as Scotty Bowman. You show your extreme ignorance if you think that’s gonna fly around here.
High praise, indeed Ludman,
Thank you,
Allow me to be the first to question whether I am worthy of it.

If I wanted a comments section full of the kind of trash I’m seeing here today, I’d go to Puck Daddy. Not to backseat moderate your comments section, Chief, but after almost two days straight of wading through a ton of raw sewage to find a cogent post, it’s getting a wee bit tiresome—maybe we need a little quiet time?

Maybe if SOME Red Wings fans would Lose with the Dignity & Class that MOST of their team showed their wouldn’t be this pissing match between some 12 Red Wing fans & 12 year old Pens fans
It real easy to win with dignity & class it’s tougher to lose with dignity & class as some Red Wing fans & 1 player are showing

Wouldn’t know that from reading the Pens fans comments on here.
Truth is, the night of the game and early the next day, every Wings fan on here, including myself, were all saying Congrats to the Pens for the win. It was only after you guys hung around all day yesterday and today, rubbing it in with more than half telling us to get a job and how much our city sucks that we got pissy. And your fans are still doing it 48 hours later.
So please, I’m am sick of righteous Pens fans who talk sh!t all damn day and say we are the ones being rude.
Have I and others been rude back? Yep, but we can only take so much of your crap before we respond. I know you have your own places to discuss things, so if we are so unbearble, why do you stay here for so long? Because you just want to keep rubbing it in, and then whine when someone dare be rude back.
If you guys had such dignity and class as you keep telling us you had, you would have accepted our Congrats in the first place and left, not keep whining about how bad you’re treated 2 full days later. Get a life.

Oh, and just in case you don’t believe me, this is the first thing I posted when I got home after Game 7, and it pretty well mirrors the majority of the posts made in the first 12 hours after the game:
I too wanna say congrats to the Pens, you guys played 2 pretty much perfect games in bouncing back from Game 5. You guys have a better defense than I ever gave you credit for.
Wow, what an a$$ I am!
Would it have been so hard for you guys to just accept our congrats and enjoy your win? Apparantly it was, because all we have had to read since, “why don’t you give us more respect,” “get a job,” “Detroit sucks,” etc etc.
But yeah, it’s all us picking on the poor Pens and being poor sports. Look in the mirror guys.

You sound pretty bitter to me.
Posted by Thrashers fan from DC on 06/14/09 at 06:20 PM ET
For Pete’s sake, this is absurd.
Just absurd.
I spent a good part of the day Friday enjoying the pleasant weather by chasing my four-year-old nephew up and down hills and along paths and keeping him from falling into a pond (and yes, it was my idea, and yes, it was far more tiring than I thought, thank you very much) and then we both got red Slurpees, and he showed more maturity than a lot of the comments here.
It’s just turned into one giant hissy fit. STOP IT!
In case you missed it, the season is over. It was a close series, and the Wings injuries were one strike against them and for the Penguins, the Penguins experience was a plus for them and against Detroit, and those two factors together combined to flip the results from last year, when Detroit was much healthier and the Penguins had essentially no experience.
Officiating sucked like a Hoover - both directions, all series, and for the entire season and post-season - and if the officials work the offseason, they would still be sucking. If you listen carefully, you can hear them right now ....
The Penguins deserve credit for winning - fine. You have it. You won’t get any more from the Red Wings fans because they love their team. Of COURSE they think it is the better team - it’s their team. I’m sure the Penguins fans think their team is better, too - and was last year as well - and to them it is and always will be, because it IS their team. Capitals fans think their team is the best, San Jose fans think their team is the best, Avalanche fans ... are depressed, but you see what I mean. Everyone thinks their team is better because it is their team - they might lose a game or two or thirty, and they might or might not win a series, so for that year they do not wind up with the best record or the best end result, but they are still the BEST in terms of “my favorite team and the one I care about the most.” So Let. It. Go.
Got it? Good. On to the “classiness” aspect:
Booing? Directed at Bettman. As it always is. He is the Matt Millen of sports, but in every NHL city instead of just one. Any right-thinking hockey fan would do no less. Just as opponents lifting the Cup meets with polite applause or silence.
(And don’t trust the television entirely on this - I’ve noticed vast differences between CBC and Versus, for example, in what the heck the microphones pick up. Sometimes it sounds like two entirely different games, just from the sound.)
Cheering Crosby’s injury? It happens. Started with cheering a big hit and moved on from there. And honestly, as long as the player can move around that doesn’t bother me at all - the time I see a fan cheer someone motionless on the ice and not applaud when he is taken off on a stretcher is the time I throttle someone in public for extreme asshattery. Perspective - he went off under his own power, so it wasn’t as serious as some injuries we have all seen.
Should the Red Wings waited longer? Maybe, maybe not - they were disappointed, had already shaken the hands of many other Penguins, probably had no idea it would take for Crosby to make his way over, and no doubt they wanted to shower, shave, get injuries treated, and in Lidstrom’s case possibly get another bag of frozen peas for his injury. Meh.
Draper’s comments? Product of disappointment and the result of every comment being catapulted around the internet for immediate action, reaction, and over-reaction instead of being allowed to fade away after a while as an isolated comment should.
Did Crosby act like an excited, immature twit? Probably - he’s 21, and everyone does at that age from time to time. Probably if he had it to do over, with forethought, he might have asked the reporters to wait for a minute, gone through the handshake line, and then returned to the interviews - but he didn’t have a chance to plan it out ahead of time. Is it that big of a deal? It’s exactly as big of a deal as Hossa leaving a team he had no ties with for another in free agency - a mindless bit of trivia that may be blown up into a much bigger deal than it is, just because trivia, like a gas, expands to fill all available space. Is it a big deal and a huge reflection on Crosby’s character? Not unless he does the same kind of thing when he’s five years older and doesn’t have the explanation of being young and inexperienced - then it will clearly reflect a petulant and childish personality. But not right now.
End result - it was a tremendous series, very disappointing for Red Wings fans, incredibly exciting for Penguins fans, looks like it set records for television ratings, capped off great seasons for both teams, all the fans should be proud of how each of their teams performed, either go to the parade or be left alone to lick their wounds, take a break before contemplating how the offseason will work out, stop poking the fans of the other team in the eyes with sharp sticks to get a reaction, and start a joint movement to collect all the illiterate trolls in a big giant pile and throw them off a cliff into the ocean to be eaten by sharks (not the San Jose Sharks, though - we all know they don’t have that much bite).
STOP RECHEWING THE DAYS-OLD BREAD IN THE DUMPSTER BEHIND THE RESTAURANT WHEN SOMEONE IS READY TO SERVE THE ENTREE IN THE DINING ROOM.
The season is over - it’s time to move on. Try to keep up.
And I urge everyone to get onboard with what I think would be a fun offseason project - locate Gary Bettman’s email address and send him prank messages claiming that you are emailing him from your Blackberry because for every message sent, Jim Balsillie gets another $0.10 to go toward relocation costs for the Phoenix Coyotes and you want to help out the Make it Seven campaign. ![]()
Well, that and setting up a steel cage match between Sean Avery and Ray Emery. You all know it’s fated to happen eventually.
Other topics to discuss that are actual, honest-to-god hockey-related things:
Trade rumours: Dany Heatley: Whither go he? Edmonton? Pronger to LA for Jack Johnson and a pick? Marleau out of San Jose - or Thornton, maybe?
Draft stuff: Tavares or Hedman? Or other? Who ya got (if, you know, your team stinks).
Where are the available front office openings, and are there any we can shoehorn Pierre McGuire into so he will cease and desist from assaulting the eardrums of hockey fans everywhere? Crawford in Dallas is a good start.
And just for fun: If you owned a hockey team, what would YOU name it? (And anyone who picks a goofball collective name that can’t be readily pluraled should be smacked upside the head.)
Stop acting like a bunch of dorky children. It’s been years since I babysat, and I don’t have any desire to do so again - but I also don’t want to wade through the urine-soaked threads resulting from an internet pissing contest that should have been over ages ago on a blog I’ve been frequenting and enjoying for years.
Come on, people - move on and get with the program.

Baroque I couldn’t have said it Better !!
JohnW I said SOME Wings fans & also 12 year old Wings & 12 year Old Pens fans
& here is my post from Page 1 on the ripping Detroit for the Auto industry’s Incompetence
1st Of The Pensblog Does some great Stuff, I have No use for them though as I am an Old Fart, Old enough to Be most of those Members Dad, so it’s not my cup of tea, BUT Anyone ripping the City of Detroit for the Economic woes of the Car Industry are Despicable Human Debris
Unfortunately most of the Pensbloggers are teenagers & early 20’s so they are either still in school & Mommy Daddy pay their way or are in College & Mommy & Daddy are paying for it
They don’t have a Clue what it’s like to lose a Job !!
Keep your Head up Guys & Gals it happened in the Burgh too in the late 70’s & 80’s
But Please STOP with the “Sid Disrepected NIk” BULLSHIT!!! He was a Little late & Lidstrom left in a hurry & I don’t blame him for leaving as the team that dethroned them was about to skate with The Cup on his Ice
Franzen made his way over to Sid to Congratulate him & apologize for injuring him, Why couldn’t Nik & Draper do the same thing
You can hate Sid because he is not a Wing, But don’t disparage his reverance for the game of Hockey & the Traditions, Every player who plays with him knows he is about Hockey & winning, Ask Guerin, Kunitz, Gonchar or even ask Hossa
& for your Happy Horseshit of their were No Pens Fans 5 years ago that’s BS & you should know better
The Problem was the Pens & the Burgh needed a Arena !!!
& I was a Fan before you were born

Maybe it’s the fact Rosby was pretty ineffective in the Finals, and in the end showed his true colors; colors only a parent, xenophobic North Americans, and blind fans could appreciate. But the rest of the people know.
heh. red winger, you are a compete idiot. If you said that at a bar in Detroit even those guys would laugh at you for such a comment.

Lidstrom is one of the top defensive players in the NHL.
Hossa will return with a vengence but with the Cup hangerover pen(i)s fans…and there will be one, might not get to play your team next year.
Has far as jobs…..it will effect you. Remember the steel industry?.... Oh, thats right you are a young punk so how would you have empathy…forgot

If Draper and Lidstrom were ACTUALLY classy, they would have waited to offer their congratulations to the winning team instead of bitching about it to the media. Who’s the whiner now?
The whole point here is Lidstrom was not supposed to be kept waiting according to Stanley Cup protocol. I’m sorry. If protocol is to hard for your feeble mind to understand, then lets use the word, history.
In Stanley Cup history the Captain of the winning team shakes the hand of the losing team’s Captain before any celebration takes place.
If Crosby had any class at all, the first place he would have been is in the handshake line. He’s the Captain. That is his first responsibility. That is what you do as the Captain, when you win any series let alone the Stanley Cup.
I recall the first time Stevie Yzerman won the Cup. It took him 15 years. After one of the longest droughts in Cup history, he was the First person in line to shake hands with the runner up.
Excited? I think so. 45 year drought, but he still put his own personal feelings aside and did the right thing.
No excuses for the absolute classless way Crosby celebrated. No excuse. It took Yzerman 15 years to win a Cup and the very first thing he did was to shake the hand of the Flyer’s Captain. Go home and try to celebrate and get the F@ck outta here.
If it’s all about the win then just what the f@ck are you doing here? Mom grounded you? Basement too empty? Get a life cretin. F@ck off. You Can’t Understand Normal Thinking.

I wonder if that isn’t an exaggeration. Although however minor such an injury is, it’s always pretty sensitive. Maybe, the next time Chicago comes to Detroit in the regular season, instead of waving signs or something, everyone should wave packages of nuts at Sharp.

Don’t start again, people. It just got calmed down.

So, who do you like - Ray Emery or Sean Avery? You are in the same conference and will have a ringside seat. ![]()
(So far Emery is the favorite, I think.)

As for the handshake thing, I was at the game, and after the line, I noticed half a dozen or so Wings waiting, and I thought that was odd. I didn’t know why at the time, but now I do. Hank was the only 1 I could name now who was waiting, but there were others. Eventually they all just left. So there were Wings that waited for Crosby but never got their handshake.

But it was funny, right? LOL
Because it’s so true.
Yes. But nasty nonetheless. And yeah, that is a great blog.
I’m going with Emery too. And it would be awesome. Pay per view gold.

You know, the entire problem would be ended for all time if the players are left alone right after they win and can go through the line and everything BEFORE the reporters shove cameras in their faces and the hat people start shoving the merchandise at them. Let them all celebrate and congratulate each other, THEN the media and hat wranglers can get involved.
That will be one of the first changes I will institute once I carry out my coup d’etat of the commissioner’s office and install myself in the position.

Ok, so when you do that can I be in charge of marketing? Because I have some good ideas that involve ALL of the teams in the league.

I think Emery would win over the hearts of a lot of people other than Philly fans, too. Sean Avery is widely hated, and Emery was just hated in Ottawa - and the same stuff that was “colorful” when the team was winning instantly became “disruptive” when the team was losing.
He always seemed to be pretty talented, just had a short temper. Extremely short.
(And if he could beat down Tootoo, too, he’d be a Western conference favorite as well. Redemption through beatings!)

Absolutely.
Effective immediately upon my taking over - all women’s items will be offered in the ACTUAL TEAM COLORS, not just a choice of pink and baby blue! And not everything will be covered with so many sequins and sparkles that it looks like they were savagely attacked by a rabid Beadazzler. Again, adorable if you are eight - not so much if your are an adult female fan, not a puck bunny.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.
